those sirens blowing are a joke in norman, you see folks...when they blow that means run outside with you video camera and start saying OH MY GOD over and over. or you can join the asshole.. thousand tornado chasers.. racing all over disobey traffic laws. these dippys have gotten people killed cause they drive looking up at a cloud speeding at 100 going nowhere. there should be laws in okla and elswhere to protect people on the roads.
Man i missed it.. :c i lived there 2 years ago and i really miss all the storms. I now live in Arizona where it is just wind and little sprinkles, This tornado was right behind my friends house too.. they are ok :P it just got close to their house
hmmm, AlphaChief68 I agree, I think the title is wrong maybe something more like "AlphaChief68 Buzzkill".
The sirens don't turn off, they rotate. There's a directional horn that maintains a constant tone, it rotates 360 degrees. Sort of like an old rotating police car light, it doesn't flash when it points at you. As it approaches your path it looks brighter, brightest directly at you (sometimes the girl ones wink) then decreases brightness as it passes. Crap, I sounded like AlphaChief.
Pretty sure this was just RFD. Most of the damage that occured in Norman was due to 80mph RFD winds that followed the area of rotation/tornado. The tornado never was this far north of hwy 9...we watched it pass just south of the NWC with the associated funnel overhead and then proceed down hwy 9. Makes me wonder if the title of this video was just to attract more views.
The sirens have to turn off in intervals, otherwise they will fail. At least that is what I heard. Must be that they would over heat or something to that effect.
I"m in north central Mississippi and (except for that last part of the vid) thats exactly what happened right over my house! I called it in when I saw it was trying to spew tornadoes, but the sirens never went off, and noaa never gave a watch OR a warning. I was freaking the hell out. lol
I was across town and I was still ready to dive into a closet at the first hint of a train noise! These idiots are UNDER it and just keep screaming "look at the funnel"!! That's going to become a new entry into the "famous last words" canon.
@1WC4L I was born in Oklahoma. But I was born with a debilitating personality defect that left much of my common sense intact. Sure it makes me stand out. But it also makes me much less likely to die from something idiotic and preventable.
@existenceisrelative I can respet that. But, we're safe about it. Some people arent, and those are the people you hear about. I always have a car running, and a helmet for hail, and if it gets too close I just hop in and leave. haha
@britainmal i dont know why alot oklahoma people wanna have their material goods, mobile homes and poor structred homes be swept away all the time...i would always take my material goods with me and my home and other material goods would be a underground shelter or safe room if if lived in oklahoma.
,,just keep your irreplaceables like jewelry, old documents and photos in an underground vault, but keep in mind your big screen tv and furniture will probably be given to Dorothy.
@copingwithmurdock Because the chance of YOUR house being hit is very LOW. The chance in a 25 mile radius of any point that day was High. Very rarely issued although it's been used a lot because the severe weather has been very active lately.
@poopsyproductions true...but still its just like the chances of a twister hitting jersey city, nj are low but it still happens or can happen anyway and you can still die from it if your not prepared. i would live in a safe room or underground shelter no matter were i lived becuse i would take no chances on not only tornadoes but any of its other cyclone realitives (hurricane, noreaster, polar vortex) as well as anyother life threatning disaster
@copingwithmurdock I have lived in oklahoma for 8 years and in those 8 years I have seen a lot of tornado warnings issued around us. The Bartlesville-Dewey tornado (never hit Bartlesville) was changing routes to where one moment it could've hit us but it moved north and hit a town that is connected to us. No one died. Many tornadoes are very weak, and the chance that it hits YOUR house is so small, because tornadoes are so weird in what they do.
I miss oklahoma so much, especally right now-strange the things you miss when you move. My family lives near the truck stop that got demolished. thanks for the great footage. (and how I miss the sunday siren checks too)
shit I remember this, first day of finals my senior year at OU... insane
