A Master's Degree in Education doesn't impress me because Education is one of the laziest majors next to Journalism, Women's Studies, 14th Century French Poetry, etc. The people in those majors have very little academic rigor and I doubt if most of them have the problem solving skills to get out of a paper bag. I think we should change the requirement for teachers to go back to school while teaching to say if you teach math or a science, that you should be required to get a BS in Engineering.

Westar Energy used nonunion labor for their first baghouse, and after they missed their deadline by a month Westar decided to use union boilermakers for the rest of their baghouses. @TheImpeacher I worked a shutdown in St. Marys KS 4 years ago on a power plant. They had non union building their first baghouse, they missed the deadline by a month and cost the customer millions. As I type we have Union boilermakers building their second baghouse. Out in Holcomb KS we've been back in that plant for 10 years because non union got pissed off at their contractor and sabotaged the powerplant. Non union is cheaper, but sometimes ya get what ya pay for.........

@mizsoutiger I'm a Union Fuckin Boilermaker, I keep your lights turned on by maintaining The power plants (including Nuclear) that supply your electricity. I also keep the refineries running. I've hung iron 300 ft in the air, like parts that weighed in access of 150 tons. I've also made welds on boiler tubes where I had to use a mirror, and they all passed X-ray. All I want is a decent wage and benefits, and I got that because I'm a Union Crafstman.

I'm a Boilermaker I work for a different contractor on every job, I usually have a different boss and stewart on every job also. On my job if you don't produce you get canned, powerplant outage work is assholes and elbows work. I got an education, I went through 4 years of apprenticeship training in the toughest trade there is. I don't flip burgers pal, I WORK ON NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

Yes a decent wage and benefits, I travel for my job as most Boilermakers do, I give up my family and everything I love for 9 months a year. It takes a damn good paycheck to make that worth it. @mizsoutiger I'm happy with my life. I work a good job with good benefits, I'm not tied to one company I choose which jobs I wanna go work and which ones I don't. My job requires alot of travel, that's why I make $34/hr. I like my job and I'm proud of it, It takes alot of skill to do my job. I can climb like a monkey 200ft in the air hanging steel and love every minute of it. I can also crawl in a hole and make an X-ray quality weld using a mirror.

@mizsoutiger The jobs in my line of work tend to be less than 3 months. Due to the nature of the work it's hard to stay with one company for long enough to get health insurance, let alone build a pension. On the other hand by being union I can work for hundreds of different contractors across the country with the same benefits as they are based on hourly payout to my insurance and pension funds within the Union. This gives me much freedom by not being tied to one company.
@mizsoutiger As a Union Boilermaker I also had the benefit of going through an apprenticeship that involed on the job training plus extensive training off the job at my union hall's 5 million dollar training center. I have access to work reports of futture jobs, I can get welding certs for dozens of contractors with 1 test at my hall instead of testing for each job.

Our kids are always on the honor roll. We have a discussion with the principal of the school just today to work out which AP classes one of our daughters will be taking next year. They be getting college credit while still in high school, and probably graduate college by the time they're 20.

Here, a new teacher starts out around $25k. That's chicken feed for a master's degree. Also, teachers can be fired for cause, even those with tenure. There is a shortage of teachers already. Smart people don't want to go into the field because it doesn't pay enough.

@TreesOnTheBeach My wife handles bankrupcy cases, and some teachers had to claim BK. In doing so they have to reveal their wages, therefore, I know ecactly what I'm talking about. And yes they only work 9 months out of the year. They get three weeks off for Christmas, another week off for Easter, multiple holidays, even ones they make up for themselves, plus two months off for summer. You do the math. Well I have holidays off too, and you probably do as well. So what. And sorry, no, all teachers do not make $75k a year. They have a salary scale and usually start out making $25k or so a year, and that's with a master's degree. I went to a public school too, so please don't use that as an excuse.

A Master's Degree in Education doesn't impress me because Education is one of the laziest majors next to Journalism, Women's Studies, 14th Century French Poetry, etc. The people in those majors have very little academic rigor and I doubt if most of them have the problem solving skills to get out of a paper bag. I think we should change the requirement for teachers to go back to school while teaching to say if you teach math or a science, that you should be required to get a BS in Engineering.

@TheImpeacher I worked a shutdown in St. Marys KS 4 years ago on a power plant. They had non union building their first baghouse, they missed the deadline by a month and cost the customer millions. As I type we have Union boilermakers building their second baghouse. Out in Holcomb KS we've been back in that plant for 10 years because non union got pissed off at their contractor and sabotaged the powerplant. Non union is cheaper, but sometimes ya get what ya pay for.........

I've hung iron 300 ft in the air, like parts that weighed in access of 150 tons. I've also made welds on boiler tubes where I had to use a mirror, and they all passed X-ray. All I want is a decent wage and benefits, and I got that because I'm a Union Crafstman.

My job requires alot of travel, that's why I make $34/hr. I like my job and I'm proud of it, It takes alot of skill to do my job. I can climb like a monkey 200ft in the air hanging steel and love every minute of it. I can also crawl in a hole and make an X-ray quality weld using a mirror.

Due to the nature of the work it's hard to stay with one company for long enough to get health insurance, let alone build a pension. On the other hand by being union I can work for hundreds of different contractors across the country with the same benefits as they are based on hourly payout to my insurance and pension funds within the Union. This gives me much freedom by not being tied to one company.

Unions are responsible for the 40 hour work week, overtime, OSHA, benefits, and almost every other workplace right. When enough people say fuck the unions and they go away get ready to be slaves again. We pretty much are. Wages are going down and cost of living is going up. All of that is due to the loss of union membership. That doesn't happen in Union shops. They have the courage to stand up for their rights as workers. Unions have abused their power by holding companies for ransom (more wages, more benefits, etc, etc, etc). They always ask for more and never give anything in return. The unions are at it again, supermarkets going on strike. I hope they do. There's plenty of people out of work to take their place. Please go on strike.

Taxes go to wherever government administrators think they should go. They often hire employees. Those employees do NOT work for you. You, along with them, are merely taxpayers. Those employees answer to their bosses, just like any other job. When Wendy's hires someone, that person answers to his boss as well. Not to you. Understand now?

@RCWorks Attacking my children isn't the nicest thing to do, my small minded friend. But for your information, both my wife and I have master's degrees, and we value education highly. Our kids are always on the honor roll. We have a discussion with the principal of the school just today to work out which AP classes one of our daughters will be taking next year. They be getting college credit while still in high school, and probably graduate college by the time they're 20.

Bad teachers will equal poor students, of course, and that's a road we don't want to go down as a nation. @bek12 We would have better teachers if we could fire them. That's why charter schools have a much higher rating for graduating students. A little competition would raise the bar. Here, middle school teachers are making $75,000 plus benefits for only working 9 months. And they still complain. No wonder California is going broke. What a waste.

@MrOTLChamp $75k a year in a place where homes cost half a million doesn't sound exorbitant to me, and you're talking a single number. Is that for teachers with 15 years experience, 20, 30, or what? Here, a new teacher starts out around $25k. That's chicken feed for a master's degree. Also, teachers can be fired for cause, even those with tenure. There is a shortage of teachers already. Smart people don't want to go into the field because it doesn't pay enough.

Then also has the power to strike for more wages and benefits. Not to mention they still can't compair to Charter schools. And lets not forget just how hard it is to fire a teacher. Unions rarely fire anyone.

@MrOTLChamp Everything you are saying sounds false. Teachers don't get off 3 months a year--they get off 6 weeks. And $75k... is that their salaries upon retirement? I'd like to see you link their salary scale for your state. Every state has one posted online. All teachers aren't part of a union, but I have seen teachers fired, union or not. Btw, in the statement telling me how they don't compare to charter schools, you misspelled "compare."

@TreesOnTheBeach My wife handles bankrupcy cases, and some teachers had to claim BK. In doing so they have to reveal their wages, therefore, I know ecactly what I'm talking about. And yes they only work 9 months out of the year. They get three weeks off for Christmas, another week off for Easter, multiple holidays, even ones they make up for themselves, plus two months off for summer. You do the math. I noticed after I posted, I had misspelled it, but I went to a public school. Sorry

Well I have holidays off too, and you probably do as well. So what. And sorry, no, all teachers do not make $75k a year. They have a salary scale and usually start out making $25k or so a year, and that's with a master's degree. I went to a public school too, so please don't use that as an excuse.

I have some vacation days, like most of everyone else, but, I don't take all the usual vacation days like holidays, and still get 2 months off for summer, and 3 wks for Christmas, and another wk for easter. Thats atleast 3 months vacation out of the year. What do you think the average vacation time is for most employee's? Try about a week or 2, plus federal holidays

I don't "pack heat." I have never made an offer someone cannot refuse, nor have I given anyone a Columbian necktie. My "posse" consists of hard working employees and sometimes teachers. The teachers bring brownies sometimes.
