So lovely :) What makes music sound so Japanese? It certainly is unique and special in the world! Hisaishi, Kawai, Sakamoto! Please suggest more. Arigato.
@theMrJMC - i thought it was a viola at first because of how deep and rich the sound was in comparison to the violin but the last note threw me off (it's sad that i play the violin and i can barely tell) because i'm pretty sure you can only hit that last note on the viola if you tune it differently/manually. i'm pretty sure it's a violin (pretty sure.. hehe), and the notes sound a lot more rich because the soloist is playing in position most of the time.
@theMrJMC It's a violin, it sounds low cause he's playing in 5th/6th position on the g-string alot of the time. besides, that slightly fatter vibrato is typically used to give the violin a rounder and fuller sound, much like a viola. if you want another really sublime example, try listening to alexander rybak play "song from a secret garden", it's a beautiful mellow piece played in a similar tone to this one :)
My boyfriend and i were really sad today, because we missed each other and we are away from each other. I started crying on skype, and he sent me this song, i felt i missed him more and more each moment i hear this song. Never knew that he appreciated music, and thanks to him, i got to know about joe hisaishi. Such a talented man. I am touched by his music, and i really cannot stop listening to it.
Brings back the memory of watching totoro in threater. I remember because kids under 4 gets free admission, therefore, there were tons of kids sitting on the stairway while our parents sits comfortably in their seats.
@Kashoma just buy the Ghibli DVDs, they have all of the soundtracks in them and you get to watch some of the best films ever by Hayao Miyazaki , trust me these films are amazing, with a combination of an amazing film director and an amazing music composer, nothing is better
@GimmeFoodYabitch Do they have the instrumental version on them? I have the normal version from the film. I bought it of iTunes, but I found no other version on there.
@Kashoma yeah i suppose the live version played by Joe himself is alot better but i just don't think you can get hold of it, really wish there there was a way though :/
@Kashoma When Donari-no-Totoro came out it was a mega hit and there were several soundtrack audio CDs marketed, but you will not find any being nowadays and the CDs are collectors items worth at least 4x the orginal price. I was one of the lucky few because a cousin of mine bought some in Japan and gave them to me as a brithday present. I'm taking them with me to my grave ;-)
and the first one who queued who bought 4 tickets then we were notified that all the tickets were sold out X(
Then I heard later on that 60%of the tickets were for internal sale only....
Thanks to this, I believe those who really love Joe Hisaishi have no chance to see such wonderful performance or we gotta pay much more.....shame on them
I'm glad he's a very happy man inside. This is the only way he's able to delve into the mind of a child this brilliantly...the world of dreams, imagination
@TheEarthbenderToph I believe it's a violin rather than a viola, the lowest note is Bb below middle C, the highest note G6 is 2.5 octaves above middle C...
On the contrary, I like the deep mellow voice of the violin; it gives off a tone that I recognize in ancient Asian instruments like Ajeang and etc. It also fits the mood of the music. The scratchiness comes from the quality of the video I believe as the high notes on the piano sound quite harsh, too.
Truth be told, this violinist could've lightened up his bow a little so that it wouldn't sound so squeaky and "greasy." Honestly it kinda made my feel uncomfortable. This song is beautiful and the violinist didn't really do it justice. But still, it was amazing.
Gorgeous composition, as always with Hisaishi-san. It's a real shame the violinist did not do this piece justice. The guy can't even play in tune. He plays with no feeling, just saws away at his instrument. I wish Hisaishi-san could have found a better violinist to play this stunning piece of music.
This song is like that "imaginary" tone that resides in dreams. It's so solemn, yet happy. It has that amazing feeling that makes you know exactly how to look straight. And, like great dreams, no matter how much time passes you never forget it.
I agree. This piece of music makes you think of home. I have been living in Canada for 8 years now... I really miss my home in China... I hope they didn't cut down all the trees...
the violin really makes me cry.. i've watch totoro since im a kid n still re-watch it sometimes but this part of music never makes cry. reminds me of my home n my childhood, my chinese-style old house and the my grandparents, and their favorite chinese old song... (T_T)
