Lincoln's speech consecrated the grounds of a national cemetery on a battlefield where almost 60,000 died, called for the survival of our representative democracy in the middle of a civil war and restated his purpose to create a new nation with equality for all. It took about two minutes to deliver and he wrote it entirely himself.

The Tuscon Memorial Service certainly was Obama's best speech as President and I can't find fault with his message. Only the most cynical could. It was a great eulogy and call for reconciliation. I'm not sure where you are from but sometimes memorials are used a Celebration of Life. This phenomenon is not unique to any culture or religion and quite frankly at times preferred to that of the more morbid traditions. To each his own.

The standing ovations and the cheering in the beginning are unbearable and completely unappropiate. It´s not an academy award ceremony, people died for God´s sake. The speech itself is intelligent and touching.
They cheered for the ways we can honor the wounded and fallen by living up to the best America can be. My own uncle wanted his funeral to be a joyous celebration, and so it was. After getting beaten down by sadness, I say let them rise to celebrate their strength and our unity.

It shows you how truly ignorant and intolerant we Americans can be at times of things we don't agree with. I myself was somewhat disconcerted at first by the cheering only to find my President would not let me as he also wanted to celebrate the lives of those we'd lost and honor those who were wounded and heroes that came to their aide during the tragedy.
Very moving speech, masterfully written and delivered. As some commentators have said, the need for the audience of mostly Arizonians to cheer about something after this tragedy may be hard for someone outside to understand. But I cannot fault them for such a human reaction. What they cheered the most for were the noble actions of the victims, the responders, the Americans practicing democracy, the ones who rose above pettiness.

This "event" was a disgrace. A "memorial"? Not by a long shot. Who ever organized and planned this circus was not only devoid of common decency and good taste, but was nothing a political hack that staged a big pep rally.
The behavior or the audience was over the top. Cheering, applause, yelling. It was a disgrace.
Obama never once tried to bring the crowd into line.

Lincoln's speech consecrated the grounds of a national cemetery on a battlefield where almost 60,000 died, called for the survival of our representative democracy in the middle of a civil war and restated his purpose to create a new nation with equality for all. It took about two minutes to deliver and he wrote it entirely himself.

The Tuscon Memorial Service certainly was Obama's best speech as President and I can't find fault with his message. Only the most cynical could. It was a great eulogy and call for reconciliation. I'm not sure where you are from but sometimes memorials are used a Celebration of Life. As some commentators have said, the need for the audience of mostly Arizonians to cheer about something after this tragedy may be hard for someone outside to understand. But I cannot fault them for such a human reaction. What they cheered the most for were the noble actions of the victims, the responders, the Americans practicing democracy, the ones who rose above pettiness.
