It looks as if the english no longer mess around with fires ever since the kings cross fire. Good to see that they actually evacuated though. Ive seen vids of us airports with fire alarms going off and nobody moves at all!
after reading ur discription... im sure the pa system tell you to remain where u are and wait for further instructions...thats standard for any building that size... until they know exactly where the fire is...
funny how everyone on here seems to know the rules with continous tones and intermittent ones...here in vancouver, canada every building seems to have a completely different system and most are just a continuous bell, but i guess that's true anywhere with older buildings that haven't been renovated in a while. most high-rises seem to have voice evac but other newish buildings still don't really seem standardized
public/commercial building are required by law to have voice evacuation systems in case of emergancy. this si to save staff time and allow an orderly evacuation. if the fire alarm has been activated in an ajacent area/building it lets people know to prepare to evacuate should they be required to do so.
@Polinio09 In the UK i believe it is required in a larger public area by law (shopping centre/airport/museum etc) but not in supermarkets or shops, in many places in london etc emergency announcements are made in multiple languages because of the EU.
Its the same at Manchester, if the fire is not in the area then the alarm will not be constant and you stand by for further instructions. If it is continuous then you have to evacuate. I was reading the Fire Action signs while waiting in line. I was bored.
I was in terminal 3 today when the alarm was activated. It says to stay where you are nobody does and even the fire brigade weren't enforcing it either!!
I got evacuated from the Main Palaza at Gatwick N Terminal as well! Everyone looked sh1t scared. We were evacuated onto the tarmac just below the gates. The Staff were not trained to deal with a evacuation. Everyone was walking in their own directions!
The Fire alarm you got was a standby fire alarm signiling wait for further instructions!
Staff r trained to deal with a fire, what a stupid thing to say. Although it is expected that people take there brain to the airport when travelling and use there brain as well as listen to whats been said and NOT wonder off on there own on a tarmac, do they really need to be told that?
it was a itermittant alarm which means that there is no cause for concern in the area (listen to what is being said!), you would have been sent to your gate as it was away from the full alarm area and would have been deemed as 'safe', alarming areas with different priorties also allows the travellers to continue on there journey without delay and not being sent out and having to go through the security process again! THINK BEFORE YOU COMMENT!
Well why didn't you and your family do what the announcement said? You said the announcement said leave the building so why did you continue to the gate? It's not security's fault that silly people can't be bothered to do what their told. PA announcements are important and should be followed at any time. Fire alarms mean that you should leave the building because there is a fire. In fact it's a criminal offense to mot follow security announcements in airports.
"...The fire alarm has been activated in another area, remain where you are and await further instructions" is what I heard, they don't do a full terminal evacuation unless it's due to a security incident.
How do you do a bell sound on a voice evac system?

@Gb755c its not a sound, there are bells on the wall

@trucksoner its the same really in the UK.
Its only in more recent times that weve gone from continuous (and generally analogue systems) to multi signalling systems (and digital).
Most schools and public buildings just use continuous ringing bells or sirens.

all they are worried about is closing the shops and turning th lights off and checking the fire panels and then walking off.
brownguyrav2007 3 years ago
that is the interminted alarm and just means get ready to go.
and yes every single staff memeber at gatwick is trained in evacuating the airport, even if you are clean the loos or work in a shop.

thats an alert tone. no need to leave the building until a continuous evacuate tone is heard.
bcd30002008 3 years ago 2
A continuous bell tone would sound and then an evacuation message.
brownguyrav2007 3 years ago
there was an evacuation message in the main plaza bit, thats where we were, "please leave the area imediatly"
jameslove1 3 years ago
You know that the larms said that it was in an other area so they didnt want anyone to cause a rampage!
