The engine was designed to be most efficient with the guts in the exahust. It's called "back pressure" and is not always a bad thing. But hey, now your bike sounds horrible.

i took my front fairing off but not the odometer or tachometer or light. did u take all electricals on yours? and if u kept the light, how did u do it?
I took off the factory headlight and factory gauges. The headlight on there now is off of a '70s Suzuki and basically just plugged directly into the connector - easy install. Just had to drop the forks out of the triple trees to use the bracket I had. As for the gauges, I used a speedo off the same Suzuki - it's just a cable driven model, many would work - and I don't have a tach right now.
damn, I want your rims on mine dude., and have you turned it into a street fighter or do you just have the front fairing off, hard to tell from side view
Right now I have a bucket headlight on, it's at least a temporary street fighter, anyway. As for the rims, you can usually buy them all day long pretty cheap, but if you're running a 2nd gen you'll be giving up your rear disc and an inch of rim size. I've been thinking about painting them but I just like the way the red pops.
dang, I love the bike man. Just bought mine 2 days ago. 89 same color as yours. Bought it for 250 bucks, needs a a few things but it runs like a champ. My damn neibors hate mine to.
That's a pleasant way to put it :P. I always tell people it's my pissed off Craftsman lawn mower. From a few hundred yards it sounds like an ATV is coming.
I'm planning to buy a 1989 ex500 for my first bike. Any riding, modding tips you got for me? Also, do you know what I should look for when I'm checking it out like common problems or anything? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
take the motorcycle beginners course dude. Its free and you will learn tons of stuff from it. I took one and then i took the next one.. as soon as i get a bike and get some experience, next year i'll be taking the last course.
i got a 'TORA' exhaust, they have been making it here(Serbia) since the start of te 80's... sound's muuuch better:) sound's similar to a barracuda exhaust... check my videos and let me know what you think :)
Thanks! I'm hoping to eventually take it a little further and move the electronics and such up tight under the seat. Another guy did just that and it's a really sweet looking ride.
I laugh because it's nice to get a comment that doesn't say something derogatory about me or my bike, or something about killing me if I were a neighbor. Good to see you.
the reason is that this engine uses vaccume accuated slides inside, as the enigne draws more air, the slides pull up along with the needle, allowing more fuel into the engine.
Mess it up the rest of the way! Fuck Yeah!

Sounds like its beatboxin. lol Gutting the exhaust gives it a very cruiser-esque note. I like.

Thanks! I've always liked the excess noise, it's not so loud it's annoying but gives it a little character.

Character is right. i like loud, really hate strangled sounding cars or bikes

To each their own - I like it either way. When I bought the bike one of the cans was already half gutted, though, so I figured I'd finish the job :P.

mysticusasrb 3 years ago
It's bound to sound better than stock I'm sure. What did you get?

Thats a good sound but if you don't jet the carbs then the bike will die in first gear.
justinmcdowell 4 years ago
With the EX500 you only need to adjust the pilot screws. Jetting just makes it too rich without other changes.
