It is virtually impossible for us to have a conversation using words we arbitrarily attach our own meaning to. There absolutely has to be a common understanding of each word in order to communicate a thought. Certainly, context and historical use goes into that common understanding. "Icy" has almost always been considered "something cold". If I describe a person as "icy" how would you know I "meant" they were warm and inviting? Context and historical use means a lot.

No one has a monopoly on words. The word nigger/nigga doesn't belong to any one group of people. The more people try to make a word exclusive and 'off-limits', the longer it will remain offensive. The best way to destroy offensive language has been shown to be co-opting it. Everyone I know under 20 uses the word, regardless of race, and no one is offended, no one comes across racist. This is a good thing.

I understand that the history of the word is far more horrific and unfair than the usage of words like 'redneck' and 'cracker', and I point that out to people who act like the usages are comparable, and they can be talked about in exactly the same way. It is virtually impossible for us to have a conversation using words we arbitrarily attach our own meaning to. There absolutely has to be a common understanding of each word in order to communicate a thought. Certainly, context and historical use goes into that common understanding. "Icy" has almost always been considered "something cold". If I describe a person as "icy" how would you know I "meant" they were warm and inviting? Context and historical use means a lot.

No one has a monopoly on words. The word nigger/nigga doesn't belong to any one group of people. The more people try to make a word exclusive and 'off-limits', the longer it will remain offensive. The best way to destroy offensive language has been shown to be co-opting it. Everyone I know under 20 uses the word, regardless of race, and no one is offended, no one comes across racist. @JenkemToweringMidget I agree. It's different for me because I'm not from the US but a word is just a word. It's the INTENTION of the person using the word which makes it racist or not. I have many black & latin friends and I use "nigga" as you use "buddy" or "dude". Naturally I don't use it to address people I don't know, because they might misunderstand and take offense, but in my experience it seems the people that have a problem with it are usually white!
