I completely agree. These wonderfully talented artists had very understandable reasons not to play live. It those kinds of weather conditions it would have been nearly (if not entirely) impossible to keep their instruments in tune, even if you are Itzhak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma.

anyone who owns an expensive instrument will understand why they recorded this. it was far below zero during the inauguration, wood cracks, necks warm, finish cracks, strings break, etc. it would be a disaster to play an instrument live in that kind of weather.

It is possible to play at that temperature their instruments would have to be conditioned so they could and there couldn't of been a sudden temperature change but it's possible. I've seen bands play in 20 degree weather in snowbird, utah and been 10 ft away from them.

I'm not saying that this wasn't pre-recorded but it could of not been.

All of those performers are proven legends, and for anyone who knows anything about stringed instruments knows that bitter cold weather like that can severely contract the body (and strings) on the instrument, causing brutal de-tuning.
