man this is incredible. Any other police type show before this had crime scenes so glamored up and hollywood with so much going on trying "captivate the attention of the viewer". Less is way more with The Wire. This murder scene displays Its run of the mill, ordinary baltimore murder and has an eerie relaxing atmosphere.
I just finished watching season 5 and I now im kinda sad that it's over, I watched all the 5 seasons in about 2-4 weeks and now I wish I could rewatch them without knowing what is going to happen.
A police drama where good people trying to be loyal to each other and to what they hope is a good institution, but sometimes being corupted by it. Complex chacters and increasingly complex plot revealing the coruption coming from higher up and maybe the top. The only really sane character is a lesbian. Big boys games playing by big boys rules.
The BBC got their first with "Between the Lines" which has even more subtle comedy and something of a greek tragedy. If you like "The Wire" check it out.
@ShirtlessLocke I am fully aware of that. People usually close a dead person's eyes either out of respect or the fact that it's friggen creepy, which is why I noted that it was most likely used for dramatic effect. Then again I have never been to a crime scene, so maybe they don't do that until they are done investigating and move the body.
Anyone else think they should have kept this version of ''down in the hole'' as the theme in every season? None of the others are as good as this one.
It will be hard for any season of any show to outdo what they did in season 1 of The Wire. I love the series as a whole, but season 1 is just all around amazing.
@Mariose123 I'd say season 4 is the best because the the brutality side by side whith the children it took it to a whole new level of importance but season 3 will always be my favorite season too.
What an Intro, looking back it encompasses the biggest theme in the show, the failing of institutions. It may seem silly that they allowed snot to play craps every Friday night and he would steal the pot every night but do we not elect government officials every election and they screw us over, or trust in our bosses and still get fucked over. Great show
@jBo0giePop right but i understand where homboy is sayin about letting snot play all the time his money green like everybody elses the more the marrier
@OcelotDAD How? The Wire made incredible commentary on modern day society, and broke major boundaries in television. Im sorry but, have you seen all seasons of The Wire? on so many levels it held more depth and exposition on crime and the hierarchy of politics. I love Breaking Bad, but i only consider it an indulging thriller.
@MCSubliminalSol it would be foolish to try and deny the things you've listed about The Wire. I absolutely agree. The Wire is an amazing work of fiction which definitely transcends into further territory.
Dont get me wrong I LOVE The Wire and I accept the scale and depth of the show are way bigger than Breaking Bad's. But BrBa was just so captivating for me. I've never been more obsessed with a TV show in my life, Before season's 4 finale, all I could think about was the season's resolution.
@OcelotDAD That's a perfectly reasonable comment, seeing how you still recognize the objective achievments of The Wire. Breaking Bad is my second favorite show (beating out previous favorites like The Sopranos, Dexter and Deadwood by miles), tied with the first two seasons of Six Feet Under. The evolution of Walter White has been amazing compelling, but I still prefer the depth and scope of The Wire.
I don't think anything will ever be quite as epic as The Wire, honestly.
@OcelotDAD it very enthralling, but i believe thats the main difference...you cant really compare them, Breaking Bad excels at being a thriller, and the wire excels at portraying the world we live in with no censorship
@johnnymassacre Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I think that's a bit unfair. Would you decide that a book sucks if the first two paragraphs didn't immediately draw you in?
@johnnymassacre It's best to just watch the episodes in order from the beginning, because if you skip an episode or tune in halfway you'll probably be lost. With that said it took three or four episodes to really draw me in, and it took a lot more than that for me to figure out why everyone calls it one of the best shows ever. If you're even slightly interested after the first episode, stick with it. It gets waaaaaay better from there.
is there an actual trailer for this I dont wanna skip through episodes and ruin it for mysself if its good but i dont wanna waste my time and watch 2 or 3 episodes to see if ill like it can someone tell me at least a general idea of what the show is about?
@Orion1205, the show follows an investigative team as they try to catch a drug dealer. In the process, the show shows us how the system works - from cops, drug dealers at different levels in the business, politicians, teachers, students, journalists, port workers. Strong social commentary and very realistic.
I've seen Oz , which was a very good serie, but "The Wire" is a just amazing, an exceptional documentary , quite realistic ! I woudl like to know if you know any serie that is close to "the wire", in term of realism. I don't like unrealistic series

@TheGravitationist yes people in ghettos are very educated, smart and communicate on a deeper level...
Now the Sopranos there was a show, Tonys relationship with his mother, sister, mob family and his wife and kids was a true stand alone genuisness, so complex im not even going to debate it...
This show sucks and all the cheesy wannabe hard dialogs and the gayness that goes with it.
''yes people in ghettos are very educated, smart and communicate on a deeper level''
Wow, you must have poor comprehension, Where did I mply that? First off, you obviously haven;t watched that much of the show, because not all the characters live in the ghetto. The characters aren't just thugs, they're police officers, politicians, middle class civilians, etc. also, even if someone lives in the projects doesn't mean they can't be people with complex personalities or interesting relationships.
Well i've only seen a few episodes of the Sopranos, but unlike you I don't make sweeping judgements about shows I've barely watched. Wow, ''gayness''? That right there shows your level of maturity. This is pointless, because you're obviously ignorant about what you're talking about, so either actually watch the show and come back with some substantive criticism beyond ''Herp derp it sucks and it's gay'', or just conclude the show's not for you and move on.
@matmanxify I woud agree until i started watching the wire for the sec time and got to until what, episode 5 or something and got rly into it,in first seemed lil way 2 serious and boring but after that very interesting like real police investigation.I woud agree with Braking Bad as one of badass TV shows ever made,Sopranos same thing, but the wire is madden as the real system work...watch the series again and u will realize in what kind of fucked up world u've been living into...Amazing series.
fucking loved the show. its raw meaning of the state of baltimore and just america in general disgusts me. So much for a free fucked up world!! the politics was disgusting, the policing system is stupid, the drug war ridiculous, police hierarchy all about power and money. When we have god we have tyranny, when we lose god we live in a dystopian society!
@halflifeproductionz You have no idea what you're talking about. That city is fucked from the inside out, not the other way around. Norris was the best thing that ever happened to that police force and that bum O'Malley should have stuck up for him. It's all down to the large population of workers, under people with sticky fingers, to get their shit right.
@BdrfeelgoodS ed norris is a convicted felon, an ex-police commissioner. i don't get what you mean when you say his the bets thing that ever happened maybe you can elaborate.
hi, i'm am a big sopranos fan and would like to watch the wire but i get the feeling that it's got a lot to do with drugs and i'm not into that. Can somebody explain me why i MUST watch this ?
@ps3nieuws It does have to do with drugs but it goes way deeper into that. It explains the political corruption involved in the baltimore drug trade and the concept that if you follow the drugs, you start learning where the money is coming from. But once you start following the money, you wont believe where in the fuck it'll take you. If you enjoyed The Sopranos, than this is just one step above that.
@ps3nieuws I just bought the whole series on sale after seeing a few episodes at a friend's house. Recently finished the First Season. If you like a nice beefy complex storyline, lots of characters and development of them, a nice healthy dose of gritty realism, and of course a nice rich mix of drama. Then this is a good show for you. And I have only watched Season 1 within the past week, but it might be the best tv series ever made. All I can say is, wtf they shot Wallace! The tragedy!
@speedguitar88 'Cos they are the same, in a way. That's pretty much what the first season shows us, there ain't much of a difference between the way the police system works and the way the drug dealer system works.
I haven't watched the wire before and i'm thinking of starting but i have a question. Is each season like a new series? In the sense that theres new actors and a new 'setting'??
@illa2015 each season has a new setting which focuses on a different issue in Baltimores society, but most of the actors return, season one was about taking down a drug lord, season two was about the corrupt shipping industry, season three was about the politics of baltimore, season four was the education system, and season five was the media
I dunno, I felt the Wire wandered in Season 2 and 3. It was a long narrative but it was meant to play out on the streets like in seasons 1 and 4 and some of 5.
Before i watched the wire, i was insulted when people said it was better than "the sopranos", because i was a hardcore sopranos fan. Now having watched THE WIRE in its entirety, i can say the wire is far far superior to the sopranos....its the best television show ever created!
@choodessny i hear where your comeing from....i was the same ..nothing will ever beat the sopranos..then i watched the wire...loved it ...still love it now..hence why i come on you tube to watch clips.....BUT ive just started watching the sopranos on dvd again...and now im asking is the sopranos better...lol
hahaha nice comment. The Sopranos is really good too though... but yeah, The Wire is insane. You should watch Oz too if you haven't already. It was the first hour-long television drama to air on HBO.
Anyone who is a fan of The Wire has GOT to watch the documentary on YouTube called Crack House. It is fascinating. It's like watching the first series, but with real people!
@creamedcornallday - My bloody screen froze at about 30.00 and I didn't get to watch the rest yet. Is that all it was? I thought it seemed quite good. I'm in a Wire marathon at the moment (S2E3 right now), so I might have been too enthusiastic!
I've never seen an opening scene capture the essence of an entire series like this one. It touches on everything that the Wire was about: the culture of violence, opportunism, and hope defining the darkside of the American Dream.
What a great show, extremely deep and philosophical, it takes a close look into certain sociological issues. Another thing I noticed that was really cool is in the 3rd Season it shows the shifting of power in the city government & on the streets. Like a city council guy takes on an incumbent mayor & Marlo who takes on Avon for control of the west side drug trade. As u might of guessed one is more violent than the other
I was just introduced to this show very recently - much like Deadwood I missed the original run of the series. After seeing this scene and opening I knew this show was going to be something special - after watching all five seasons I can agree with all of those who said this was the greatest television drama ever created. If HBO had finished Deadwood the way that it was meant to be finished, it would be right there with the Wire. Excellent stuff!
i was at a store today, and i heard police siren from outside the street, and i was like "COPS!" and expected some arrests (1 week after having watched the first season) .And the other thing is , it now feels strange if i dont have a gun always with myself :P
@swinsontinson It's supposed to be a metaphor of the War on Drugs in America. The police know the players will be selling drugs, and put them in jail when they catch them. The players finish their time and go back to selling drugs.
"The author of the diary and the diary itself are, of course, imaginary. Nevertheless it is clear that such persons as the writer of these notes not only may, but positively must, exist in our society, when we consider the circumstances in the midst of which our society is formed."
@WuTangRevenge don't think so, kinda looks like him, doesn't sound like Black Thought tho, it just looks like a gay/at night version of You Got Me...hehe...
Such an amazing show! I just started watching this show on DVD this year. Have seen the first two seasons so far. Liked the first better than the second but the second season is great too. IDK. The first season was just so amazing. Can anyone tell me, without spoiling any plot lines, if the 3rd, 4th and 5th are great too?

@matmanxify I woud agree until i started watching the wire for the sec time and got to until what, episode 5 or something and got rly into it,in first seemed lil way 2 serious and boring but after that very interesting like real police investigation.I woud agree with Braking Bad as one of badass TV shows ever made,Sopranos same thing, but the wire is madden as the real system work...watch the series again and u will realize in what kind of fucked up world u've been living into...Amazing series.

Annihilate3275 6 months ago
fucking loved the show. its raw meaning of the state of baltimore and just america in general disgusts me. So much for a free fucked up world!! the politics was disgusting, the policing system is stupid, the drug war ridiculous, police hierarchy all about power and money. When we have god we have tyranny, when we lose god we live in a dystopian society!
halflifeproductionz 6 months ago
@halflifeproductionz You have no idea what you're talking about. That city is fucked from the inside out, not the other way around. Norris was the best thing that ever happened to that police force and that bum O'Malley should have stuck up for him. It's all down to the large population of workers, under people with sticky fingers, to get their shit right.
BdrfeelgoodS 6 months ago
@BdrfeelgoodS ed norris is a convicted felon, an ex-police commissioner. i don't get what you mean when you say his the bets thing that ever happened maybe you can elaborate.

hi, i'm am a big sopranos fan and would like to watch the wire but i get the feeling that it's got a lot to do with drugs and i'm not into that. Can somebody explain me why i MUST watch this ?
ps3nieuws 7 months ago
@ps3nieuws It does have to do with drugs but it goes way deeper into that. It explains the political corruption involved in the baltimore drug trade and the concept that if you follow the drugs, you start learning where the money is coming from. But once you start following the money, you wont believe where in the fuck it'll take you. If you enjoyed The Sopranos, than this is just one step above that.
ThisGuyUnderMeIsGay 7 months ago
@ps3nieuws I just bought the whole series on sale after seeing a few episodes at a friend's house. Recently finished the First Season. If you like a nice beefy complex storyline, lots of characters and development of them, a nice healthy dose of gritty realism, and of course a nice rich mix of drama. Then this is a good show for you. And I have only watched Season 1 within the past week, but it might be the best tv series ever made. All I can say is, wtf they shot Wallace! The tragedy!

What is the name of the song ??
Koziol07 7 months ago
@speedguitar88 'Cos they are the same, in a way. That's pretty much what the first season shows us, there ain't much of a difference between the way the police system works and the way the drug dealer system works.

I haven't watched the wire before and i'm thinking of starting but i have a question. Is each season like a new series? In the sense that theres new actors and a new 'setting'??
illa2015 7 months ago
@illa2015 each season has a new setting which focuses on a different issue in Baltimores society, but most of the actors return, season one was about taking down a drug lord, season two was about the corrupt shipping industry, season three was about the politics of baltimore, season four was the education system, and season five was the media

I dunno, I felt the Wire wandered in Season 2 and 3. It was a long narrative but it was meant to play out on the streets like in seasons 1 and 4 and some of 5.
mrmootheirrev 7 months ago
Before i watched the wire, i was insulted when people said it was better than "the sopranos", because i was a hardcore sopranos fan. Now having watched THE WIRE in its entirety, i can say the wire is far far superior to the sopranos....its the best television show ever created!
choodessny 8 months ago
@choodessny i hear where your comeing from....i was the same ..nothing will ever beat the sopranos..then i watched the wire...loved it ...still love it now..hence why i come on you tube to watch clips.....BUT ive just started watching the sopranos on dvd again...and now im asking is the sopranos better...lol
paddy415 7 months ago
@choodessny
hahaha nice comment. The Sopranos is really good too though... but yeah, The Wire is insane. You should watch Oz too if you haven't already. It was the first hour-long television drama to air on HBO.
ChrisnSnoop 7 months ago
@choodessny
Also it paved the way for television by being the most violent and graphic show you will ever see. lol.

Anyone who is a fan of The Wire has GOT to watch the documentary on YouTube called Crack House. It is fascinating. It's like watching the first series, but with real people!

@Noodlehorn Inside a Crack House? is that it?
creamedcornallday 8 months ago
@creamedcornallday - My bloody screen froze at about 30.00 and I didn't get to watch the rest yet. Is that all it was? I thought it seemed quite good. I'm in a Wire marathon at the moment (S2E3 right now), so I might have been too enthusiastic!

Murreh 8 months ago
I've never seen an opening scene capture the essence of an entire series like this one. It touches on everything that the Wire was about: the culture of violence, opportunism, and hope defining the darkside of the American Dream.
ramonalejandrosuare 9 months ago 4
What a great show, extremely deep and philosophical, it takes a close look into certain sociological issues. Another thing I noticed that was really cool is in the 3rd Season it shows the shifting of power in the city government & on the streets. Like a city council guy takes on an incumbent mayor & Marlo who takes on Avon for control of the west side drug trade. As u might of guessed one is more violent than the other
mikedd56 9 months ago
I was just introduced to this show very recently - much like Deadwood I missed the original run of the series. After seeing this scene and opening I knew this show was going to be something special - after watching all five seasons I can agree with all of those who said this was the greatest television drama ever created. If HBO had finished Deadwood the way that it was meant to be finished, it would be right there with the Wire. Excellent stuff!

elminino29 10 months ago
@swinsontinson It's supposed to be a metaphor of the War on Drugs in America. The police know the players will be selling drugs, and put them in jail when they catch them. The players finish their time and go back to selling drugs.
drktigger 9 months ago
@swinsontinson It's confusing but it has more and more meaning throughout the series. It sort of summarizes the drug war for one thing.

Such an amazing show! I just started watching this show on DVD this year. Have seen the first two seasons so far. Liked the first better than the second but the second season is great too. IDK. The first season was just so amazing. Can anyone tell me, without spoiling any plot lines, if the 3rd, 4th and 5th are great too?
myfacesp 10 months ago
@myfacesp Every season is great. Season 3 returns to focusing on the streets and the drugs so it's more like season 1.
