@sinisan14 He COULD play bass but he just wasn't good enough to be able to play one of these tunes. He could play a whole entire Ramones album on bass even though he wasn't familiar with Bass at all.
@simmo2303 The sex pistols wanted nothing to do with rock and roll. Yes they were manufactured, but they were not rock and roll. And comparing them to the Monkees is ridiculous. Completely different musical style. The Sex PIstols were Punk rock whereas the Monkees were more bubblegum/ pop rock.
They were not manufactured in any way or form whatsoever. If you read your history on this band it was Steve Jones who pestered Maclaren to manage them. Jones was young/clueless jailbird potential and approached Maclaren as he did not know where else to turn to. Maclaren was at first not interested and it was only because he took a shining to Jones he took interest. No way was it manufactured. They were not created on the west coast of USA for a TV audience to sell margarine in 1975.
and I Love the fact that Glen matlock was inspired by Abba's SOS piano intro to come up with the Pretty Vacant intro....and I never knew that till a few years ago..
@wideernie Rotten/Lydon wrote the lyrics. He gave the intellectual backing to the Pistols without which they would be nowhere near as good as they were.
Matlock wrote all the lyrics bar one line which was "we know what we feel" after the line "stop their cheap comment". It's in Matlock's book. All the other song lyrics are Lydon's, fair enough.
the band is about as rock n roll as you can get in my opinion, they did give it everything didnt give a fuck what people thought, what people said or fuck all just a group of lads saying fuck you we are the sex pistols take it or leave it

@Blitzkriegpunk77 the thing that people forget when they go on about punk and the sexpistols was that they were actually an awesome band and made a few awesome records
Punk rock in Europe 1976-77 was a kind of Reformation of rock music. Too many were sick and tired of that nice, clean and sterile glamour rock. They wanted to pull off the plug of shit pipe.
When I first heard these guys I didnt pay much attention. I listen anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen and I said okay cool songs nothin special then I listen to this and ''No Feelings'' and fuck my brains out it all changed. Raw sound lyrics and an attitude seen in a few. Okay Pistols the more I listen to you the more I love it.
92% of teens have turned to pop and hip-hop.If you are part of the 8% that still listens to real music, copy and paste this message with some of your favorite bands to 5 other videos. DONT LET ROCK N ROLL DIE!!
It was Rotten's contempt for the rock establishment that made their short existence inevitable. He didn't want to become the thing he loathed i.e an established rock band and all the fake nonsense that goes with it. The original intention was to destroy the rock industry not be a slave to it. If they had continued, it would have been a humiliating admission of failure. Of course all principles went AWOL with that dreadful reunion in the 90s but that was typical of that nasty decade.
So what was PIL... an established touring band over 20 years and several albums. I don't really think you can say Lydon ceased the Sex Pistols because of 'contempt for the rock establishment '.
I would say it was because the band had spun out of control and was in free fall. It was inevitable it would self destruct when you consider the band was mis-managed. McClaran was out of his depth and Branson was clueless as he had previously only had success with sedate hippy Mike Oldfield.
@MENSFORTHHILL99 Fair point but there was a bit of deliberate loss of control when you decide to tour 'cowboy country' rather the established spots on the US tour. Guess I was trying to picture Lydon's mind in early 1978 rather than the what has transpired since but as with all revolutions the establishment of the seventies he loathed was replaced by the one he helped found and which he has benefited from lucratively since.
@meansofbeams Actually no it wasn't. Glen was kicked out of the band in '77. No one played bass on stage and Steve Jones did the bass for studio recordings.
@MerVicious Have you got the album Never Mind The Bollocks here's the Sex Pistols ??? It clearly states Jones, Rotten, Cook, Matlock. Pretty Vacant...is from Never Mind the Bollocks... You're telling me Steve Jones played bass for studio recordings, you my friend are talking shit. Jones was on guitar, Matlock was on bass. Wait till your bollocks have dropped b4 you try preaching to the choir, in fact, never mind the bollocks, you're vacant !
@meansofbeams Are you retarded? Of course Matlock would be on the album. He wrote Pretty Vacant and did the bass for Anarchy in the UK before he was dropped. I've watched enough documentaries and interviews to know for a fact that Steve played the bass lines in studio.
"As well as lead guitar, he played many of the bass guitar parts on the Never Mind The Bollocks album. Glen Matlock's playing appeared on the tracks recorded when he was still in the band."
@meansofbeams FRAID YOUR WRONG THERE MATE GLEN PLAYED ON ANARCHY AND LEFT THE BAND BEFORE THE REST OF THE TRACKS WERE LAID DOWN,YOU CAN KIND OF TELL BECAUSE ITS THE ONLY TRACK ON NMTB WITH A DEFINATIVE BASS LINE JONESY PLAYED THE BASS ON THE REST AND JUST STUCK IT TIGHT TO THE GUITAR....WHATEVER THE CASE A FUCKING FANTASTIC ALBUM
Yes your're right Jonesy played bass on almost all of the tracks on Bollocks,But Sid took up the touring bass playing after Matlock left and it was a dumb move on every level.Exept maybe he looked like a perfect Sex Pistol. Attitude and Looks. Maybe they were coming apart at the seams anyway by the time Vicious arrived, but once he got there it was bound to blow apart.
Some time very soon the Sex Pistols will be re-discovered by a new generation of rock fans who will then realise just how bland and soppy the 'pop-music ' they now listen to really is!! This original and all-time great group will be among the legends where they belong!!
@MikeMuk1 Well I was not around when the Sex Pistols were actually a band. But I (although I'd heard them first about 12 years ago) have loved them more, for the past few years. So I and, am sure many others are doing what you mention, now! haha. Although what you mentioned in one way has probabaly happened before but with bad results, ie. American "pop punk" bands imitating in a not as powerful meaningful way hah.

I don't get the point of stupid people voting "dislike" all the fucking time even when the video is good. If you don't like don't get the fuck in, you morons!!
@TheSexyPistols all you kids need to try harder. You fucking fail, there is still a lot of good rock music being made. Of course your not going to find good music if you dont look outside corporate radio and mtv.
i was born in '92, always wanted to live in '77.... even if i actually like clash or ramones more than pistols, who were a band created by McLaren to make money... i'm italian, maybe i can't understand american or british punk scene, but italian one now sucks, it always sucked, but now is fully crap...
@TheSexyPistols I made my self the same question, why the fuck I born in the 90s. This music suks, maybe the 90 was the lasts years of good music, and de millenium fucked up everything
P.D: Am 14 and I love everything call Rock and Heavy Metal and PUNK!
@hansikm013 Sid Vicious was NOT the end of the Pistols. Lydon kicked out Glen Matlock, who was the best songwriter in the group. McLaren poisoned everyone's mind against each other, so Lydon wasn't on speaking terms with Jones or Cook. Lydon also thought the band had lost its point by becoming a meaningless touring rock band, which is why he left it to start Public Image Ltd., which he considered an anti-rock band.
If he could of played great bass and wasn't a self destructive idiotic junkie,it could of been great.I mean he LUCKED into a dream come true of entering into an already established popular recording and touring band and threw it all away for himself, and everyone else in the group,(and their fans). Like a selfish dumb wanna be junkie. But Hey"That's Punk Rock!!! NOT!
@hansikm013 seriously i feel it was nancy if the movie sid n nancy was correct bout how everything in both their lives went down then i say it was nancy who cause the break up of the sex pistols and of course sid was blind not just blinded by drugs but blinded by love ie being in love with nancy and listening n doing everything she said
@hansikm013 It wasn't Sid, Rotton even said it himself that they were not having fun anymore.. they were getting too big, too popular, too well known. Sure Sid's drug use made it harder for them but he wasn't there downfall.
@0MULCH0 Hahahaha look at the fucking pussy pretending to play bass yet people still idolize him 30 years after his death.... wow great burn man! when are you going to add in the part about you? how you will be forgotten by the rest of the world pretty much instantly only family to mourn over you while sid is loved by millions.
before i first listened to the sex pistols, i was a insecure girl who listened to death cab for cutie and jack johnson, that sort of crap. this band changed my life in ways that no other band today could. they started me on punk, on social justice, on class wars, on gender issues and feminism, on riot grrrl punk, on anarchy, on empowerment through rebellion. they helped give a scared girl courage, and to me that's pretty revolutionary.
This song, this vid, this band, this attitude was exactly what I was craving for as a stinky little teenager skateboarding around Melbourne (Aust). Like most of you, I was never the same again.., gladly. Waited until 1997, the 'filthy lucre tour, to see then. Though I did follow PIL around Melbourne when they toured in the 80's, nothing matched Johnny, Glen, Paul and Steve being "fat, forty and back" as Mr Rotten said.
I was only 2 years old when this came out but I can just imagine what a hammer smack in the face it was to all the prog rock bollocks and inane music that was around at the time.
Directed by Mike Mansfield, what the camp bloke from Supersonic? The champion of seventies glitterati Gary Glitter, Bay City Rollers, Rubettes et al. Surely not!!

i was born in '92, always wanted to live in '77.... even if i actually like clash or ramones more than pistols, who were a band created by McLaren to make money... i'm italian, maybe i can't understand american or british punk scene, but italian one now sucks, it always sucked, but now is fully crap...

@hansikm013 they like him for being the "attitude" of punk... thats about it, as far as talent goes, a retarded midget with no hands is better :P

@HyenaJourno Spot on! plus Sid might have looked good but was next to fuckin useless on the bass so the writing was on the wall!

@Robcatist Sounds fine to me, theyre not trying to be Rush ya know....

@Robcatist
...and you must be reading my mind....
NOT!

@hansikm013 seriously i feel it was nancy if the movie sid n nancy was correct bout how everything in both their lives went down then i say it was nancy who cause the break up of the sex pistols and of course sid was blind not just blinded by drugs but blinded by love ie being in love with nancy and listening n doing everything she said
MrSurferlonely 4 months ago
@hansikm013 It wasn't Sid, Rotton even said it himself that they were not having fun anymore.. they were getting too big, too popular, too well known. Sure Sid's drug use made it harder for them but he wasn't there downfall.

before i first listened to the sex pistols, i was a insecure girl who listened to death cab for cutie and jack johnson, that sort of crap. this band changed my life in ways that no other band today could. they started me on punk, on social justice, on class wars, on gender issues and feminism, on riot grrrl punk, on anarchy, on empowerment through rebellion. they helped give a scared girl courage, and to me that's pretty revolutionary.
