Hi, I'm a Drop Pod / Land Speeder Storm / Mycetic Spore / Mawloc / Trygon / Necron Lord with Veil of Darkness / Decent Of Angels / Deathwing Assault / Storm Raven / Valkyire / Anyone outflanking and I just went past your screen. I play Tau, a lot, and this strategy is officially obsolete.
Kroot wall is a horrible tactic and turtling in the corner is one of the worst things you can do. If it works for you, it's because you play against bad players. Playing mobile tau is the best way to play, but no one plays them that way and thats why everyone thinks tau suck.
@TheHumanObservation Heh, good thing I already figured that one out; sure, XV88's are at best slow, but no reason to not move them. I also am planning three Devilfish with nine FW in each. I figure that I can do the FoF Wedge to take on Gaunts and the like, two Hammerheads dropping sub-munition everywhere. I also work on Tanks in the Army, so I load-out all of my Devilfish like Bradleys. Missiles might suck, but it gives some hope...
@TheHumanObservation Well, not quite; I use Hammerheads still and Suits are too easily destroyed by Termies and vehicles, so I'm keeping them around the infantry to act as Heavy Weapon Squads.
@Chancespart3 I get your point, it's a difficult rule and clearly shows the problem with true LOS.
But I do like that rule better than the coversave you can get in area terrain, even though the model is clearly and wholy visible.
In my opinion it evens out, tall models and models on pins can see more and then shoot at more, but are more difficult to hide and therefore will be spotted and shot at more often.
All this time I thought that the camera was actually attached to Shawn's hand. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that you drugged Shawn, and you are now dragging him around out of the camera's view. All the "sniffles" from allergies are more like cleverly disguised grunts from carrying him around. I am SO onto your games...
I vote that we get a "Josh's corner" at least once a week where he talks tactics, strats & anything else he feels is interesting, we all know & love Shaun's vids but i feel we need a small fix of Josh too every week since he seems to have a lot to say. *puts an x through the Josh space & puts voting slip into the box*
and this is a perfect example of why josh should be left with the camera more often...
perfect way to give people their inspiration for the day, and possibly inspiring them for a Tau craving. Very good job, you should definitely record some more tactical videos, i found this to be quite useful
I don't get that from the rules, the rules on page 21 clearly says
"Firers may of course shoot over intervening terrain if they are tall enough... // ... check the firers' line of sight by taking a good look from behind their heads, and 'see what they see' " and if you don't think of intervening models as "terrain" the rules for Intervening models says exactly the same.
I would never claim a cover save against that kind of models shooting at me!
The tau tacits i would use is 3 devilfishes full with firewarriors bring them with full speed to a good spot to rain down fire while im coverd by 2 hammerheads that follow wiht 6 inch each turn to suppress ^^ while crisis come down from the sky :D
You sir are a scholar and a gentleman. This man stepped up and put his two cents in on clearing the misunderstanding in the tactics when utilizing a Tau army.
well that was useful, i am in no way a big player, i'm more of a painter, modeler, and "reader of stats and fluff" than gamer. but this vid was useful cuz i can never really use my tau properly, one of my best fights with them was won with me charging commander o'shava and my crisis suit squad directly into the middle of the space marine forces, taking out the middle and having my firewarriors and kroot take out the outer lines. it was a good fight
Great job on the video Josh, I've been playing Tau for a long time. Great tactic, use it in everyone of my games, plus the piranha tactic to. Loved the tau/nid batrep you and Shawn did last march. Learned a lot watching you in that one. Job well done!!
6 X-88 battlesuits, 1 Hammerhead, 72 Firewarriors. And then some mix and match with the Crisis suits. THAT is how I played. 1750 points.... *lights a smoke* Feels good
I'm in love with Farsight. The best delaying tactic is shove him and 6 other suits all with shield generators, fully wound allocated and target locked, and 12 ablative drone wounds right down your opponent's forces.
Bodyguard are WS3 instead of the normal suit's WS2 which makes more of a difference then you would think. Farsight is no slouch either, good WS, I, Attacks and gets 2d6 armor pen in case you get hit by a dreadnought. It is also a retinue so Farsight can't be picked out in CC.
Oh poo I didn't no that Josh ime currently selling all my tau army on eBay because I was getting so frustrated ahhhh cheers you did well be nice to see shaun put a comment on here lol
i know how you use tau, first off , go to the forgesofwar site and download their free 40k version rules they made and all the free armys or races as it is in 40k, and with that fair and much better system you wont have to be forced to play a certain way instead you get a fair game , that is better than gws , and costs nothing, check my review of FUBAR , if u want to get an idea of this groups rule ideas ect ;)!
Awesome. I love every aspect of the Tau, but I doubt I'll ever play them as I don't know how to use them. More vids like this will see me buying a box or two of tau ;) Good work dude.
I would call BS on this unless less than 50% of the crisis suit is being obscured by the kroot... That would negate that in most cases. Also the turtle tactic is unwise against guard. I always take no less than 2 artillery peaces and the master of ordnance. Not saying thats what every guard player would take. In your kroot screen against most army's will not last past turn 2.
@TheMadwizz Same with Daemons. Tau usually break in those situations, or so I've seen. Just like 'nids usually failing at long range. It's the nature of the armies.
@TheMadwizz That's the hardest part about Tau. The Kroot wall is pretty much useless against jump packs as they can jump over them and it doesn't do to much for you aginst shooting armies against shooting armies like IG. With Tau you have to play against every other book differently and with the newer books multiple lists within that book. This is why I think you don't see many Tau armies in the top tables of major tournaments. It's really hard to build an all-comers list with an old dex.
oh yeah and couldnt you could shoot with the kroot for some extra firepower?
could you make your own channel? (if you dont have one) it would be cool to see what other tactic vids you have for Tau. Ive been playing Tau for alittle under 3 years now but im still finding some tactics that i could use and since im usaly playing orks i can always use that extra tip or two ^_^
@Warpetrie I don't think I'll make my own channel. (Lazy side of me shines again. :P) But I've talked with Shawn and I'll probably be doing these kinds of videos once a week.
I play against alot of blood angels and chaos marines and eldar, I''ve found that kroot are very effective if you know how to play them. I play a 12 kroot 1 krootox squad and i've gotten 40+ attacks in assault, They kill more chaos space marines than my fire warriors, generrally at least 1 and a half full sqauds per game
well im not going to argue that the space marines would get a cover save but I think most people in a tournament would so I think it would be safer to jump over all the kroot in the shooting phase and then jump back in the assualt phase. You would not lose any shots and you will not have to argue.
impressive video dude, but i have a question...how would they fair against my logan grimnar wolf guard termie army? think it over...how many turns of shooting you think it would take to kill 26 of em? more than you can survive i bet :P
@sonhighguy Is that your whole army? My experience with terminator armies is it mostly comes down to your armour saves. I've been able to get 4 turns of shooting on a regular basis if I go first against most termie armies but I've seen every combo of termies shruging off every railgun/plasma gun I could throw at them and I've seen 5 man squads completely wiped from long range fire warrior shooting. So basically, it's up to you. :P
@rustbucket34373 that's true, i've seen that happen as well, however i have to disagree that it's up to me...it's up to the dice. they're what rules this game after all, and that's one of the things i like most about 40k, it's unpredictability. their armour is their most valuable asset it's true, but i like to rely on tactics more than armour saves. mostly because my dice rolling blows :P why space wolf termie army? because i love the SW fluff & the termie models :)
@sonhighguy Sorry. When I said it was up to you I ment to say it's up to how the dice are rolled. Stupid 500 characters cap. :P
I agree that tactics win more games then relying on poor dice for your opponent/good rolls for you, but with any dice game, dice rolls can just screw any tactic you have. I found the perfect video to describe this too. You should all check it out because we have all done what happens in this video before.
@rustbucket34373 Stupid Youtube wouldn't let me post the link to their own website. Just search "Space Marine and the cruelty of chance." It's hilarious!
You never fight in close combat with Tau, but you do with Kroot because they have 2 attacks each and with 20 of them that can equal 60 attacks if you charge. Granted Kroot often go last because there slower so maybe around 40 to 50 some attack and I have found that against non combat armies there very good at winning even against a couple Dark Eldar units but NEVER with Tyranids.
@EdwardElric555 Why would non-melee units approach your kroot lines in the first place, when they can just get a transport to tank shock through them ?
@228zip That's why you outflank or infltrate. Either way just blow up the tank in the first turn that all I do first is take out tanks and then let my Kroot assualt. BTW it a full fleshed out Kroot unit with all the units so pretty much anything thats assualtly and needs a transport is pretty much died or distracted.
well then its a double edged blade buddy. If it is from the firers point of view then I can shoot you back....ummm without cover.tau they still suck..find me a tau player that has placed in the top 5 of a GT and i will bow before them.
@AutarchAndrew Oh man andrew I think you are a great player but it is not nice to say one army or the other sucks. I think the player makes all the differance in any army. Even the eldar have been called crapy in my gaming club. But we all know that is just crazy. " all hail Fritz!"
@makooma ya man but the thing is tau are just not good in competition play...unless you are a god.but they could win in friendly games...and eldar are one of the lower tier armies like tau.
@AutarchAndrew If any part of the crisis suits body is covered by the kroot in front, then a cover save is given. It's not measured from head to head.
@AutarchAndrew Sorry but you missed the part where the crisis suits are taller than the kroot and hence can see the marine squad in their entirety whereas the marines view is obscured by the kroot wall and can only see the suits' heads granting them the afformentioned cover save.
@Fenrir109 ok I checked they do get a cover save but..whats the big deal any IG vehicle that ignores cover could make short work of that tatic.and an army like castling marines would destroy them sure you get a 4+ cover save but you die by a missile launcher still have of the time.and honestly what makes a 4+ cover better than a 4+ invo save from a shield drone or a shield gen.nothing really put shield drones are cheaper.and also those kroot are an easy KP by the way.
@AutarchAndrew The reason the 4+ cover is such a big deal is becuase you can get it for free by positioning your units correctly whereas buying 2 shield drones for your 3 crisis units is 90 points. You just don't have that many points laying around at 2000 pts. Taking a shield gen takes up your multi-tracker slot.
Kroot are ment to die. Never had them survive a game in any tournament. For 112 pts when fighting assault armys though, I would never leave home without them.
@AutarchAndrew I never said the degree of it's effectiveness, all i was stating was the fact that you completley overlooked the logic of what Josh was trying to explain and thus i felt you should be corrected. I do agree with you that Tau are a lower tier army especially with all the new spiffy codecies being released but the purpose of this video was to introduce/reintroduce some form of tactics for playing aTau army.
can i have a multi tracker, shield generator, and twin linked flamers (or any other weapons on a crysis suit)

AutarchAndrew 1 year ago

Fenrir109 1 year ago
@AutarchAndrew Btw Cherry picking certain armies is void as 99% of tactics will have some form of counter
