  • I wish I was as smart as you!

  • Don't forget about the sinking of the royal cruise ship Lusitania on 1915 which may have tensed relations involving the U.S. The ship which carried some Americans, however, may as well was transporting arms for the Allies after a second explosion took place ensuing the German U-boat's damage. Both sides had their stories to promote propaganda, but is one of the reasons for the US found in the books

  • @KevinVancouver2 *America's history, *its, *they're. Thank you for playing YouTube idiocy bingo. You managed to hit many squares- poor grammar, insults to America, hasty generalizations, disdainful yet vague dismissal of someone's work, and, of course, your free space, but did not manage to get a Bingo. Shucks. Have a lovely day.,

  • DonT forget that the 15th amendment doesn't give people the right to vote it strictly states that people cannot be barred from voting based on their race or color. Congress or the individual states can still limit individuals' ability to vote if they so chose.

  • Correction!! First Philippine Republic which USA ended with the

    Philippine–American War (1899–1902)

  • @pay4cayray Thats exactly what i was thinking lol

  • @khanacademy

I think that you just forget Portuguese Empire.

  • @NFCRFX250 the Swedish, Chines, Saim Empire, Russian, Polish, Hungary-Austrian... and many many more

  • Hey Khan,

Do you think you could talk more about Prohibition and the 1920s or just go more in depth with American history? I could use it for my History class since I really don't understand it in class

    Thanks Bunches!

  • History repeats itself. Money can't buy friends, but you can get a better class of enemy.

  • Typical American interpretation of Americas History and it's part in World History.

Little wonder that Americans are so arrogant when there taught historical inaccuracies.

  • @KevinVancouver2 lol i think there is little interpretation for history, all these things really happened and have been studied , what in here is wrong?

  • @khanacademy Your bias from being American is why you think that. Compare those empires and the many other great ones your forgot, based more on the accomplishment in areas such as culture, piety, or intellectual advances and you'll see that America has made little world affecting revelations in these subjects. Now who knows someday America will put aside it's patriotism and pride to work toward advances in these more important fields, then we will be a truly great nation.

  • @b3rd4 Aren't all superpowers disappointing? I mean, you get the ability to do whatever you could have ever wanted and all you're allowed to do is fight giant robot monsters and complete your chores in a mildly easier fashion?

  • Haha, delusional much? It all started with the USS Maine and is still going today.

Once your greedy country realized how profitable war was, it sabotaged itself to generate $. That's all you people have ever given a shit about, and you're leaders are happy to kill millions of foreigners as long as you're still the 'richest'. Just for the record; to label me as a conspiracy theorist is completely naive. This is global belief!

  • @metallicker100 Thing is, every superpower is like that. Not only that but we lose money on wars now due to the fact that we have a majority of our supplies manufactured by the Chinese and Koreans. The reason we are fighting wars is because 78% of government officials elected within the past 25 years are idiotic, corrupt, overly religious, and completely unconstitutional. That's why we need people like Khan, because otherwise the voters are going to elect Christie or Trump as president in 2012.

  • i would really appreciate a video on the great depression. it seems like khan has a great mind for economics and history and marrying the two could be very informative. also i don't know about those with more pedagogical experience but im entering high school and still haven't header a word about this important event. (PS. it would be super topical ;))

  • @khanacademy they have been many empires. dont forget the swedidh ^^

  • @aggbala swedish*

  • I'd love if you made a video going in depth into the gilded age. I think the people really need to know this time more in depth.

  • I love history! I think i will be a history major in college

  • 12:03 i literaly clapped cause i was so proud

  • @b3rd4 ... Go to RussiaToday they're where all the brainwashed people are, like you.

  • @Agomongo1235 Do not even remind of me of RussiaToday...

The comments are just a bunch of theory's but say nothing about the video it self most of time

  • Sal, at the time of the Great War, I believe there was actually a higher percentage of German descendants in the US than English descendants.

  • @b3rd4

You just got schooled by Mr. Khan!

  • Thanks a LOT! :D

  • I love this series, and the timing is perfect since the AP US History exam is coming up really soon!

  • @theamazingempiricist as if this is actually gonna help us in a DBQ situation... *cries in corner*

  • @khanacademy,

Not sure that comparing bad behavior to even worse behavior is the elegant way forward - it only helps justify oneself out of an issue. When I challenge the fact that Canada's debt is growing, people argue that the US are worse, French dodge by arguing that Greeks are worse - you can always find worse. Not the way forward. USA is disappointing - end of story. We started 1900 with approx. 10% of government and should have made it at 0% in 2000. Great work ahead for most of us.

  • Thanks for the history of 'Jim Crow.' I knew what the term meant, but was unaware of when or how it came into play.

  • I could watch your videos all day

  • Sal, you should do some videos on the current middle east crisis. That would be AWESOME! Since we see a lot of that stuff currently, it would be awesome to know the origins of all those problems.

  • We should suspend democracy in the south again.

  • @hedonism13

    *half sarcasm

  • A bit too general, but a good overview nonetheless. I only hope that you can get enough quality vids up before the AP US test next friday.

As always, keep up the good work Sal!

  • @Smielle1 Elaborate? :p.

France gets involved militarily in other countries (former colonies) affairs without any international guidance; and you don't hear a word of it on American news.

Why would you presume I've been living in a cave, haha?

  • emancipation proclamation - sorry i don't listen to Hip Hop.

  • Good job once again! :-)

  • May I request a video on the Gilded Age? AP exams are in ten days for US History and the WHOLE class struggled on it during yesterday's review day than any other topic. Thank you, it would be fantastic!

  • can you do a video on the history of native americans in the usa? most history courses in high school and middle school don't do native american history justice. thanks!

  • Nice, APUSH exam is in a week so this review is great.

  • You are awesome :D

  • @khanacademy To be fair, the U.S has achieved near to nothing as a superpower.

  • @khanacademy Yeah, agree totally. Look at the Germans after WWI. Their currency was better to use as a firestarter, a loaf of bread was OUTRAGEOUS!

  • this is so depressing

  • I'm enjoying your overviews from 30,000 ft. I have one correction: the Spanish-American War began when Spain declared war on the U.S., not the other way around. Keep 'um coming!

  • @b3rd4 You're naive.

  • When you do a video on WW1 make sure you talk about the entangling alliances

  • hurry and post all of them so i can cram for the ap's

  • im so happy that you made more history vides Sal, But i though we were gonna go into world history, thats what you left off.

  • Excellent HD videos! It it would be nice if there would be some in chem, physics. Do you do any Anatomy, Genetics, Microbiology, and other college sciences? By the way, your an extraordinary facilitator!!

  • Excellent HD videos!!! Need them in Chemistry and Physics please!!! Your an extraordinary facilitator.

  • @khanacademy When you put it like that, I'd have to agree with you. Obviously no empire is just around to spread love and peace, somewhat would go against the principal of what an empire is. By the way, just fairly recently stumbled upon your work, quite great work you do here, it is greatly appreciated, thank you. Also, as a history buff, I somewhat have a fetish for history in general, hence I favor your history videos, but they are all very informative, and interestingly narrated.

  • @b3rd4 Lol. I like how you summarize the most unanimous response or perspective people have against america either blindly or just as a group. no offense but its like the most common idea people have about America yet they are like the engine needed to run the world. the only time one would ever hate a superpower; in the context of the world never else. LOL! I just find it funny.

PS. I am a Canadian. So i would apologetically could careless. eh!

  • The 13th amendment abolished slavery and the 16th amendment reinstated it. haha

  • congrats on 50 million views by the way

  • i have been waiting for these videos for a long time

  • @b3rd4 it's probably the only superpower you know ;-)

  • @Territomauvais We have a saying "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". In that regard, the US did fairly well. I think much would have been worse if France/GB/Germany/Spain had had the same amount of power at this time.

  • @SalsaTiger83 I agree completely. France continues to a menacing extent its colonial adventures in Central & Northern Africa. Neither Germany, Spain, nor the UK have a constitution suitable to wield the power America has had dumped into its hands. Even with our wonderfully written constitution though; look at how epic America's contemporary failures are...

We are far from having a Superpower who is universally good for its people; and neighbors.

  • @Territomauvais what is it with Americans bashing the French all the time? There is no colonialism going on. What remains is something called "international relations". And who said your constitution is superior? Basically Germany's constitution is a much more modern version, and allows for nice little things like "real" majority voting and keeping lobbyism and corruption tightly in check. What I meant was the colonial powers of say 100-200 years ago, with totally different polities than today's

  • @SalsaTiger83 I'm not an American bashing the French- I live in reality. And the reality is France and its former colonies have strong economic ties to each other- and France sees to it that they use military force to protect their interests in said countries without any international approval.

Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, how about Rwanda?!- In which the French military intervened only on the side of those committing the genocide. This is colonialism by definition. Sorry.

  • @Territomauvais your view on history looks a little biased. Try to perceive more details and judge less... It is easy to arrive at conclusions, but very hard and misleading to argue about morals.

  • @Territomauvais

No, but isn't it sad that superpowers have to be tyrannical at all?

Comparing to define who was the least tyrannical is so SAD, really. It just assumes the world has no chance of being led by a big nation that will help smaller ones, so all we can really strive to be is the LEAST BAD one.

    That's just sad, IMO.

  • You are amazing.

  • absolutely brilliant.
