  • Translation (4 stanzas):

In the raging seas of aeon-end, You effortlessly hold the Veda like a steadfy ship/ O the Fish-incarnate Keshav, O Jagadish, O Hari, hail to thee.

Wondrous dwarf, You deceive the demon Bali with mighty steps/ O Vaman-incarnate--.

Urged by the lords of directions (gods), You hurl the ten heads of Ravana as pleasant offerings to the skies/ O Ram-incarnate---.

Moved by compassion, You reject the Vedic rites of animal sacrifice, O Buddha-incarnate--- Hail to thee.

For your benefit, I am attaching the transliterated sections with some notes with a separate email (as here the same may not hold within the character limit.

  • @abasuutube

hello there! absolutely amazing work for the benefit of the rest of us (INDIANKIND) . I must say brilliant work speaks of a noble soul and a kind heart. my long await comes to a halt..u dont know what this means to me! pl send me the complete song with sanskrit and english, writer/composer and meanings and ur interpretations.. i want to say as early as u can. pl tell me a little about urself too. would love to know about you!! my email is meenu1602@gmail.com.

    THANK YOU ND GOD BLESS!

  • @Meenu1602

Thanks for the compliments that I hardly deserve! The writer was JAYADEVA (or Jaidev), the last of the great Sanskrit classical poets (12th century). The shlokas are extracted from the DASHAAVATAAR STOTRAM -- the first hymn of his magnum opus: GITA-GOVINDA. The composer (and part-singer) was the illustrious Hemant Kumar. I am separately attaching some more notes and interpretations in another message to your given email-id.

  • @abasuutube thanks for the translation since i dont unerstand sanskrit but in last stanza you mentioned buddha which i dont hear.to me these shlokas seems to be from VISHNU PURANA.

  • @NANDIKHANNA These shlokas are from 'Dashavatara-stotram' appearing in Jaydeva's (13th century) 'Gita-Govinda'. The name of Lord Buddha does find mention in Vishnu-puran (Part-3, Chap-18), as also in Bhagavata, Harivamsha etc. which shows the accommodating nature of Hindu tradition. The fact is, there are some variant lists of Avatars appearing in different scriptures. Krishna, however, by general consensus, is not an Avatara, but 'Svayam Bhagavan' ( 'The Lord Himself').

  • @abasu50 thank a lot, this infofmation wa needed.would you pleae type with translation the shlokas HEMANTDA is reciting,i will be grateful.regards.

  • i saw this movie during the the Indo-China war in 1962.Wish the movie was in color.Super natural acting ,patriotism ,spiritualism is the base of this movie.jai Hind

  • Anyone know where I can find an English translation of this song?

  • This is a song of 1952. Other songs in this movie are way too famous than this song and so did not get its fame. Its very difficult to find English translation. And, avg. Indians of today's date cannot do justice in translating this Sanskrit version into English. I can understand only in bits. Lets hope some Sanskrit expert sees your comment and translates it.

  • The section covers five (of the ten) Avatars, i.e. incarnations of Vishnu, hailed variously here as Keshav (Krishna), Hari and Jagadish (Lord of the World). The five Avatars to whom the song bears salutations are: MEEN (fish), VAMAN (Dwarf), RAM, BUDDHA and KALKI (the future destroyer of sinners).

One can find English translation of the whole Stotra in Barbara Stoler Miller's translation of Jayadeva's GITAGOVINDA.

Will post an easy translation later to stay within the word limits.
