  • This song sounds too much like Batman.

  • @theonlyred4 i think the phrase would be the batman theme sounds too much like dune as duen came first.

  • @theonlyred4

    Batman was later....

  • brilliant score and i loved the movie...

  • this is for nerds

  • @Trickroad Trolling is for nerds actually.

  • @Trickroad Funny that you would say that. I love the Dune books, and I'm a right wing warmonger. Muwahahahahaha.

  • Well....I loved the movie. I thought they did a great job with the first 50 pages of a great, great book. Then they spent the last 15 minutes of the movie trying to cram in the remaining 200 pages of the book. That was lame and dishonorable. But I still love the movie.

  • The remake TV series was better - unexpectedly so - and closer to the book - because it was set over more hours than this film - and because it's more modern, the effects are way superior.

  • Why was this movie loathed? Can anyone explain?

I am a sci-fi geek and a DAVID Lynch fan but I am scared to see this. SHOULD I?

  • @rishi851 No, but that's only if you hadn't read the books. That's probably why I didn't enjoy it, thought it was too weird, and was bored by it. The first half was promising, but the second half was both rushed and confusing. They may have been running out of time. Not my cup of tea.

  • @rishi851 See it, and decide for yourself. By David Lynch standards it is average, but it has a lot of interesting visual ideas. The film is definitely an interesting one. Give it a go.

  • @rishi851 It is quite slow paced, but it really is interesting. Definitely worth a watch for any sci-fi geek. Though it might prove too boring for people new to the genre.

  • @rishi851 - dune a fuckin great movie mate, best sci-fi ever, proper sci-fi, not cheesy starwars shite, don't listen to other peoples bullshit opinion, watch it yourself. check out my playlists for the full uncut 3hr movie

  • @anlaff Totally agree, mate! Producers are too quick to remake classics these days and it de-values the original in many cases. The effects are still fanastic - there's nothing wrong with them at all. There's a place for re-makes if they stand alongside the original. I think Dune is a perfect movie. By all means re-make it but don't bad mouth it for its effects. It's so much better than modern lazy CGI shit!

  • @rishi851 It is something of a mess, but it deserves a far better reputation than it has. It is an excellent attempt at a far future society, partly because the society is not about the technology, the scenery and setting is fantastic, and the music is awesome, as you can hear.

  • @rishi851 The trouble with the movie is more how it is presented. Just the narrative and the way the story arcs come across is confusing and kind of clunky. It's almost as if they tried to fit too much in and as a result it's kind of all over the place.

  • This movie is very esoteric and the soundtrack fits perfectly. Gives me a strange feeling to watch this movie. I wish they had better FX but then I wonder if it would give me the same feeling.

  • What was it about the late seventies and early eighties that brought out so many damn good movies and sound tracks. The effects were awesome works of art before the invention of CGI. Don't get me wrong CGI can have an incredible effect on a movie like any other effect when properly employed but I digress. Still looking back at the quality of the productions at the time, it explains why so many movies of the era are cult hits!

  • ...Once, as beginning to be, I failed ' but I survived...And I tryied AGAIN ....will' yé ?

  • I'm doing a report on the book, this helps when I get writers block.

  • In another tab, play rainymood. Then play this so they are going at the same time.

    AWESOME

  • Usul: Stilgar, do we have wormsign?

Stilgar: (smiling) Usul, we have wormsign the likes of which even GAWD has never seen!

  • @arthurfgomes Agreed. The soundtrack would have fit the book perfectly and is the only thing that made this movie larger than it is. Just like the soundtrack made Conan the Barbarian a better, more epic movie than it actually was. Still hard to believe Toto made this :)

  • @rachskald hell, look at Back to the Future, the first movie, people have this image of it being an grand and epic special effects movie. It is indeed a great movie, but i believe its greatness was achieved due in large part to its score. :D

  • like any of you little worms would ve worthy enough to be in the house of Harkonnen

  • Can't believe the group i knew mostly for "Africa" also made this soundtrack :)

  • My name is a killing word.

  • the song SLEEP by MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE was inspired by this

  • LONG LIVE DUKE LETO!

  • This music transports me to another world.

  • @Mkoberland, ONE OF THE GREATEST TRACKS AT THE MOVIES EVER.

  • although I would like to add that dune was actually written long before star wars. So really, nothing was ripped off.

  • @Parkinstarkey Correct. Jose Farmer wrote this thick ass novel long before, as you said. So meetdavidthespy,

nothing was taken. Dune is Dune, is Dune. Read the book, a great couple of days spent. And note the year of original publishing. :)

  • long live the fighters

  • milk this tiny cat every day :O

  • The Sleeper Has Awakened!

  • "Remember...the tooth!"

  • @banglefaar

The tooth? You can't handle the tooth!

  • Long live the FARTERS!

  • Ursul do we have worm sign?

  • I will not fear

    Fear is the mindkiller,

    Fear is the little death

    That brings total Oblivion

I will permit my fear to pass

    Over me and through me

    And where it has gone

I will turn the inner eye

    Nothing will be there

    Only I will remain.

  • @twdalbeck27 ok dude, keep drinking that safu juice, i hear its a bit like amphetamines combined with ritalin by the way ;)

  • @twdalbeck27

    I must not fear.

    Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

    I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

    Only I will remain.

For a top comment at least get it right :/

  • @KonamiRelic Dune is my favourite movie!

  • @twdalbeck27 Actually, if you use this rule, it will get you thru situations that bring on "fear." Admittedly, my experience with this is nowhere in league with the novel's meaning of it, but yes, when facing down street thugs, dealing with legal battles, superiors, etc, all that one need remind oneself that it will all pass, is to just have the Litany Against Fear in mind... "They can kill ya, but they can't eat ya,"... well yes, there ARE those who might "eat ya," but unlikely...

  • Fayd......lovely Fayd. BRING ME MY BOY.

  • The beggining is a very delicate time...

  • the sleeper must awaken

  • The Spice gives Life......

  • What an epic opening literally the best I've heard for a film

  • Look, people like me are going to like this regardless of how you feel about the film and/or the director. I could really give a shit less that you feel David Lynch did a shitty job with the film. It doesn't ABSOLUTELY mean the movie would be better if someone else were in charge of the film. Nor does your opinion ABSOLUTELY make this a bad one either. For a David Lynch film, I found Dune rather impressive.

  • I remember seeing this in the theater, I was born in 1980. I remember the waves of Caladan mostly, and the narrator. But I watched this so many times in my childhood on VHS it's hard to distinguish further, this movie was a major influence on me. Reading the books later in life, I think Paul was perfect in the movie, however strange the rest of the movie is.

  • @evilyig If you like Dune and have found its ideas to have an impact on your life, perchance are you familiar with entheogens? Just curious. All the best to you.

  • Remember seeing this when it first came out in colleg, when the theather only showed 1 movie. Of course we smoked a joint before seeing it.

  • as i long reading dune i think i read the history of the Terran Empire of W40k

  • "Muad'dib... muad'dib.. muad'dib, muad'dib, muad'dib muad'dibmuad'dibmuad'dibmuad'dib"

  • the most epic soundtrack EVER

  • By both, I mean the book and the film. They made a classic video game, too.

  • GOD, I hope the new Dune film being made does the book some justice.

  • @emperorpenguinsrule I've read and watched both. Both are great... Hollywood is dead. I'm sure the new one will be a 3D video game with teen actors. No one is willing to make a "surreal" film or an "alien" world any more. Even the much-hyped Avatar was basically a Ferngully: the remake.

Hey, that'd be something -- an Avatar - Dune (1984) mashup!

  • @ijwi Actually Avatar was more like a remake of Pocahontas.

  • @crazyjew878 And disneys version at that.

  • @crazyjew878 Left wing pokazuka.

  • @crazyjew878 Also incredibly similar to Dances with Wolves.

  • @crazyjew878 and the perfect tribute to The Smurfs.

  • @emperorpenguinsrule Hate to bring the bad news but the latest remake project was dropped in March this year.

  • @duncanidaho17 this is not bad news.

  • Is this the greatest movie sound track ever?? I'd like to think so.

  • it was this art work that caught my eye in 1986, as a 10 year old picking something to rent with my moms movie card( movie rental laws were a little slacker then). I get exactly the same excited feeling now as I did then. It didn't disappoint, my favourite sci- fi movie of all time.

  • Anybody holdin' any spice?

  • @TheParsifal55 Intendo i libri

  • ME ENCANTÓ DUNA,SUS PAISAJES ALEGÓRICOS Y EL CONTRATE ENTRE EL BIEN Y EL MAL EN CONSTANTE LUCHA EN TODO RINCÓN DEL UNIVERSO,LA MÚSICA ADQUIERE IDENTIDAD PROPIA EN UNA FUSIÓN ENTRE IMÁGEN Y SONIDO.

  • Lucas took ideas and story elements from several different movies and books. Even classical mythology. Frank Herbert made something completely different. His book Dune, was religious, political, and also was about humanity. The Star Wars movies and Dune are vastly different. You can't compare them. One is meant to be a adventure story, while the other is way beyond that.

  • I think Dune and Star Wars are both good... Who cares if he stole a few ideas? Nothing is truly original now anyway because everything has been done already. And delibrately not doing something good that has been done by another movie would just be illogical. As long as there are other things as well.

  • @meetdavidothespy new ideas always come from the pieces of old ideas. Just like new genes come from the bits of older genes.

  • @meetdavidothespy especially if the movie was successful.

  • @meetdavidothespy If you want to know where the Imperial Death March came from, listen to The Planets by Gustav Holst, particularly the piece about Mars, the god of war.

  • Comment removed

  • @meetdavidothespy I care!

  • Unbelievable...

  • Does anyone know what the drum and bass tune that samples this is called?

    "Kwisatz Haderach" the super being.

  • 1:50 endless sand dunes

  • I have a love hate relationship with this movie, i grew up with the books since i was 12 18 years ago and been obsessed with Sci-fi fantasy movies then i saw the movie at age 16 when i rented it and i was very disappointed in it. Then i saw the extended cut which was very good and helped with the movie, it's just too much of a Lynch movie and not enough of a Dune movie. I still think Alejandro Jorodowosky could have been better since he had an awesome idea for a 14 hour Dune movie

  • @Johnlindsey289 Frank Herbert approved of the film, he didn't say it was great, but he said it was good.

  • Comment removed

  • @Johnlindsey289 are you really that stupid?

  • @SuperHeroMania

Nope, it's just that Lynch is not cut out for the blockbuster stuff and he did disowned this movie, he went outside his comfort zone and failed but thank god he returned back to what he calls "real movies" called independent cinema instead of doing big major hollywood blockbusters since it's not his thing. I'd rather had Ridley Scott who was a better choice since he was a fan of the book and could have made that 10 hour movie like planned or Jorodowosky.

  • @Johnlindsey289 jesus, you keep saying the same stuff over and over again, why are you even wasting your time on this video if you hate dune so much? Trolling is a waste of a life

  • @SuperHeroMania

I think the soundtrack is better than the film itself but like i said i do have a love hate relationship with this movie and was being too hard on this movie as there are pros and cons i like and dislike about it. Good thing there will be a new Dune movie coming soon as long as a new studio gets the rights and i hear might be 3 parts similar to what PJ's Lord of the Rings was.

  • Breathtaking! That's the only word that I can think of to describe this soundtrack.

  • How did the band who wrote "Hold the Line" write any of this? How?

  • @winorze Because it's a versatile band ! When you think about it, the same band wrote/played "Hold The Line", "Africa", "I'll Be Over You", "Jake To The Bone", "Falling In Between", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Mushanga", "Let It Go", "Child's Anthem", "Dave's Gone Skiing", "Pamela", ... versatile music ! And by the way, David Paich's father, Marty Paich is a well-known orchestra conductor and arranger. Dave has some solid background when it comes to classical music :-) That's why I love them.

  • @winorze

How did they? With help from Brian Eno.

  • @mattressjedi

Sorry. Wrong track. This was not Eno. This is Toto with the orchestra.

  • My impression is that if you've never read a novel or have read one you either appreciate it or if you have a certain expectation taste then you'd know everyone is divided on issues, for one I tend to like some movie adaptations more than the books and vice versa, people need to think in terms of readers vs movie audiences you can argue that some readers are movie goers but not all and you have to appeal to specifics for both bottom line is that I believe Dune was an interesting film and not bad

  • @Jaegar19Ultima

yeah! thats basically what I wanted to say. Just because they might not be 1:1 to the books theire not necessarily bad movies too.

  • @Jaegar19Ultima

Did you know the books influenced many movies over the years like Star Trek movies, Star Wars movies, Avatar, The Matrix, Fifth Element, Stargate and more? speaking of which, someone should do an Avatar/Dune parody trailer since Avatar does have some Dune similarities as it could use footage from this movie or the mini-series dubbed to the trailer of Avatar, that could be awesome.

  • @Johnlindsey289 yup, actually I found that out during some research into it because it sort of inspired me to write. And yup!

  • @Jaegar19Ultima

Well Avatar does similarities to Herbert's novel as Cameron stated it was one of his inspirations. Such as young man going to another planet to work for a corporation that exploits a precious substance, gets lost in the wild to be left behind, joins up with a tribe of alien people then falls for alien girl, go through tests of manhood including taming a wild beast, becoming a leader to the people and one of the people and fighting against the corporation, see the link?

  • @Johnlindsey289 I did some research and from some sources say it's at best good to have your story significantly different from the inspiration source while I've never seen cameron's avatar from what I hear it's really a mix of different movies using a theme of ecology and I can see a bridge between the two.

  • Apart from the fact how awesome this is (for me, this is the definition of an 'epic' song) two other things surprise me.

    1. TOTO wrote this? My respect for them has just increased a hundred fold

    2. In my opinion, that movie was a rape of the book it was based on. But this song, while wasted on such a bad adaptation, captures the essence of the entire book for me. I am actually convinced that if I heard this without knowing what it was, I would STILL think of Arrakkis almost instantly!

  • Stilgar do we have worm sign?

Usul, we have worm sign the likes of which even God has never seen.

  • If you look at the movies (the long and the short version) as an impression loosely based on the book rather than strict adaptation , they become great pieces of art as they should be and are very, very enjoyable. So don't be a weirding module bigot, and enjoy their unique, oniric atmosphere.

  • @moherslayer

Well Lynch hates this movie so much he disowned it even when it was a big flop at the box-office and he vowed never to make big budget movies ever again, that's a good lesson it taught Lynch because he's not a hollywod blockbuster maker and went back to making independent movies again with Blue Velvet but Elephant Man was his only good Hollywood movie as that earned him awards and good box-office/critical/audience response.

  • the soundtrack has the wierding way about it

  • just watched the movie for the first time. the soundtrack is pure love <3 pity about the plotholes due to the editing... kinda ruined what could have been awesome. But this theme... awesommeeeee <3

  • There's a Harkonnen traitor among us .... he is the one responsible for the "dislike"

  • @joaoalraled Even a Harkonnen would not be able to dislike it...it was a sand worm!

  • @noobrifle111 The Sandworm's perspective: FUCK RAIN!!!

  • @joaoalraled I blame CHOAM!

  • @joaoalraled he is a harkonnen animal!

  • I like the movie, but here's the reason it had all the weird shit that doesn't make any sense:

The orginal cut was about 3.5-4 hrs. long, and the studio took one look at it and said "Nooo!" and ORDERED the director to cut it down to just 2 hrs. I mean, God, 2.5 was just too much for them.

Well the above, and David Lynch's inherent sickness.

  • 1:48 - That main Riff is just I-N-S-A-N-E! So good!

  • Fantastic music and I liked the david lynch version as well. I have not seen the syfy version.

  • Was I the only person who LIKED Lynch's version of Dune? Sure he added some stuff that wasnt in the books, but who cares? It's not like nobody else ever did that! Look at I Am Legend! They completely changed every single detail of the book! In my opinion, that was a far bigger trainwreck of the book than Dune was.

  • The Soundtrack itself is captivating!

  • A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then that Irulans services start off very softly...

  • I hope they don't remake it.... cause they could ruin it. >.>

  • god, why do people hate this film?

  • @SuperHeroMania

Because people didn't like that some parts of the books were cut in the movie. But this movie represents like 1/4 of the first tome, and it lasts more than 2 hours. In my opinion this is a great adaptation, and everything which is important in the book is in this awesome movie

  • @Arshan35 i agree with you

  • @Arshan35 It should have been three movies, for the first book. They would have made more money that way, and made all the sci-fi nerds like myself happy; but Hollywood has never been known for consistently good decision making, or taste, or common sense, or decency.

  • @SuperHeroMania

Because compared to the book, this movie could have been a lot better. The director, David Lynch even hated it himself, he confessed it. It could've been the best movie ever if Alejandro Jodorowsky would have directed it as originally planned.

  • We Fremen have a saying: "God created Arrakis to train the faithful." One cannot go against the word of God.

  • waiting on day someone of those famous filmmaker will do respected remake of this the best saga i eve read

    thanx for upload music :)

  • This music was written by TOTO or by brian eno?? Anyone know?

  • @Mrspraderadego This is Toto. The whole soundtrack is composed by Toto, except for "Prophecy Theme" which is composed by Brian Eno.

  • I like Dune, I have read all books including the new ones. I bought a paperback Dune House Atreidies in TX and it had Brian Herbert's signature in it. Is it fake or real? No joke.

  • i had the Dune toys and things when i was a little boy (a 'littler' boy than i am now). i think i swapped them for some transformers or some other crap ..... wish i had kept them, i bet they're quite rare and might be worth something now :(

  • The film is very well made, Lynch doesnt stay at the book? What the problem? every film is a modification of a story in a book, You can't compare no book to a film. By wordspeak this film became despised, with no really good reason. It Still unique! I like so much the ego trip of the leading actor. The only thing they made bad is the (surprise for Lynch) cutting scenes for make short lenght for mediocre poeple. For Sure this film is better than lord of the rings and company avatar matrix etc..

  • @Mrspraderadego The only thing I take issue with is the literal adaptation of Paul stating his "name has become a killing word," via sound guns. Other than that, it was pretty faithful to the book. I love this movie.

  • I re saw the film after a long time i see it for first time, and i see that is a complete shit this film (I see dune extended version, explain something better but doesn't repair the disaster) , i was remembering it in a better way... :) Well the first half part of the film is acceptable even i vote it 8 on 10 in some part, scenarios etc.. of this first part, but the second is a complete disaster. Some parts are really disconnected, in some case seem a homemade fan movie. :)

  • ".....A Secret Report from within The Guild..."

  • Feyd...lovely Feyd. "WHERE'S MY DOCTOR!!!

  • I haven't read the books so it is possible i am mistaken but isn't a 3 part movie too much and just a way to get more money out of the fans?

its not the lord of the rings aftre all.

Anyway, its something to look up for.

  • @eranyyyy There were some six or seven "Dune" books, not counting the recently published (by Frank Herbert's son) "House Atreides" .... personally the 1984 version, I think, did not follow the book(s) at all; the Sci-Fi Channel produced a Dune movie in 2000 which ran, I think, 3 parts ... it was closer to the book. As to movies, I believe both were interesting (if you forget that they are supposed to be the same story)

  • @MarcellusTheGreen Why is it so hard to translate Dune onto the silver screen? What obstacles would a Dune adaptation to film have that Lord of the Rings didn't? And what compromises would have to be made for the sake of practicality? I'm surprised that with today's special effects and big budget capabilities, that there has been no talks of bringing Dune to the cinemas. Did the underperformance of the Lynch film make it box office poison permenantly or are there other reasons?

  • @jstephenj zTheres too much stuff thats interwoven and needs explaining in words (eg thoughts) which is hard to put into film. Also the book is so huge that it would be hard to fit into a 4 hour film like LOTR. Anything over 3 hours at the cinemas is unmarketable and to compress Dune into a 3 hour film would make kill the flow and depth of the movie, just like what happened to this 1984 one.

  • @jstephenj BTW they ARE remaking Dune. Check IMDB. it's still in very early works though. I hope that they cut the book down into many films so they can incorporate all parts without leaving out anything and stay true to the book. Sting and Stewart can reprise their roles too.

  • @jstephenj Well, it was planned to bring Dune back to the cinemas actually. The codename for the movie was Dune 2010 ... It's now Dune 2014, so...finger crossed?

  • This movie is nothing more than a disgusting parody of the books as it only reflects the self-inflated ego of David Lynch with his grotesque and horrifying stuff shown on film than an actual adaptation. I mean Lynch is a good director but a very awful choice when it could have been Alejandro Jororowsky and Ridley Scott who both care about the book, when this movie bombed in theaters and got bad reviews it taught Hollywood never to hire Lynch for a big budget movie again and Lynch hates it.

  • HEY I WENT TO WATCH THE NEW MOVIE OF HARRY POTTER LAST NIGHT, I WAS TOTALLY OUTRAGED TO LISTEN THE MUSIC, IT HAS SOME PARTS OF "DUNE" OR AT LEAST THEY TOOK PARTS FROM IT....I BET BRIAN ENO IS ANGRY AND FURIOUS !!

  • @parrotsarnoso

Inspired is what you mean, not stole.

  • Long Live The Baron Harkonnen!!!

  • cha-aksa!

  • George Lucas STOLE most of the ideas for his Star Wars movies from Frank Herbert's Dune Series of books. Lucas read Herbert's novel DUNE while he was attending USC in film school.

Lucas STOLE many of Herberts main themes and ideas and reworked them into his screenplay for Star Wars.

Dune took Frank Herbert SIX YEARS of research and writing to complete (1959 - 1965). The Dune series of books were masterpieces of Sci Fi writing.

Watch those recent TURD Lucas movies and COMPARE!

  • @ThoughtTraveler There isn't a modern sci-fi creator alive that hasn't taken from Herbert, or Bradbury.

  • @CarbonBasedAndroid

My point exactly. We live in an age of mediocrity and imitation.

  • @ThoughtTraveler Indeed.

  • @ThoughtTraveler how about they both were good also they are nothing alike besides being sci fi

  • @ThoughtTraveler He also "borrowed" the plot of the 1958 samurai film The Hidden Fortress. (Which is also better than Star Wars.)

  • @who3697cares. I would say the original trilogy was better than that film though

  • @mtr4216 As far as the whole trilogy goes, I wouldn't, but I have a bias towards samurai films, and I don't consider Lucas a good director. The Empire Strikes Back, when taken on its own, might be as good as The Hidden Fortress.

  • Yeah, but only because lynch had to take liberties with the source material

  • @ThoughtTraveler most of star wars is stuff lucas stole from other great golden age sci fi novels (the good parts at least). and it shows, lucas' original contributions are as gay as aids.

  • @ThoughtTraveler I know, he oversimplified the films also, and he doesn't even give any credit.

  • @ThoughtTraveler No wonder I didn't give a rat's ass to watch those last Lucas movies. Kudos to me!! Dune is a Dope Eighties Timeless Cinema with a mystical masterpiece of a soundtrack!

  • Love this movie and music!!!

  • my favorite part 1:50

  • Long live the fighters.

  • Whoa who is that dude with the big blue afro? Never noticed him in the movie!

  • Tell me of your homeworld,Usul.

  • One of the most iconic pieces of music of the 20th century
