Scooby, you are a role model. I am an 18 year old kid and I work out at home, never at a gym. At first I thought I would never go anywhere by doing home workouts, but doing so has forced me to be more creative and resourceful with what I have. For example, I use a foldable table (40+ lbs.) to do rows, 3 chairs to do deep&wide pushups, and so on. I learned a lot from your videos.
I just graduated from high school so I have some more time during the summer. One of the things I'm trying to do is get my left chest to catch up with my right. My basketball coach made me do too many burpee's and I'm afraid I did them off-balanced, placing more pressure on the right chest when I go down to the pushup position from a squat-jump motion. This "Roller" workout can really help me get my left chest back. All I have to do is force the left do more work.
OK man, I'm just kidding and annoying. Checked your profile and it's cool you're an engineer and body-builder at the same time, not just some meathead.
And it's even better you help and advise others how to practise bodybuilding. There's lots of valuable responses from you in the comments.
Be careful with this, i just tried this and on the first rep, the dumbells came in too fast and i coulden't stop the momentum and they just came in faster and i smashed my finger in preety bad.
P.S, Scooby, what are your views on unhealthy ages to start body building, i started about 5 months ago i am 16 now.
IMHO, 95% of the population are "hard gainers", and thus they are the norm, not the exception. Its the remaining 5% that are "fast gainers". Please dont take any "mass building" supplements, they will just make you fat and poor without adding any muscle. All you need is proper nutrition. See my "6-pack abs fast" video
hey dude how do u know if u've been lifting half heartedly??
ive been at the gym for about 1 month now and i'm not sure if i got stronger
i usually do about 8 reps and i really push myself on the 8th rep and soemtimes lose proper form. once i can do 10 reps i usually move 5 pounds higher. i usually do about 3-5 sets. how do i know when it is enough so i know i am "body building?"
Dont worry, you WILL get stronger and gain muscle - it just takes time. Choose a good basic workout program (like those under "Plans>Beginning" on my website) and stick with it for 6 months to a year. Every time you workout, try to either do one more rep than last week or move up in weight.
Many people claim "I cant gain any muscle, I'm a hard gainer" and when quizzed you find out that they have been lifting half-heartedly for a few months and are frustrated they didnt gain 10lbs of muscle. Most people can expect to gain only 6lbs muscle a year even with hardcore workouts 5 days a week for an hour a session. What was your workout regimen before you decided to use steriods? I worry that others will see your vid and decide to take the easy route without doing it the healthy way.
Wow i relly dont go to a gym because like for a beginer i bought 42 pounds and i just worked out like crazy for 1 month but now i can lift 60 pounds but than i stoped to get a six pack.
Great video Scooby. I alternate workouts between the gym and home and I needed something else to do for my home chest workout.
This IS a very hard exercise, but I felt it the next day! Another home Pec workout I do is dips on the corner of some kitchen units - head and legs forward, arms flared (like in push ups). Great exercise - especially for someone who hates having exercise equipment everywhere. All you need is a chin-up bar and some dumbbells.
sumo wrestlers actually die much earlier than the general population. so actually, yes, the amount of fat in your body can be directly related to your health.

Correct. Asymmetrical abs are not a problem and there is nothing you can do about them. They just look different, not better or worse, just different.
well actually when you yell when your do something like this. it actually makes you a little stronger when your executing force. thats why the karate guys always yell :D

This is definitely an advanced exercise and like all fly exercises, puts a lot of strain on the shoulders. When the elbows go behind the plane of the body, it really stresses the shoulder so keep that in mind.

The shape of his body acts as inspiration for those of us who aren't as physically fit or as awesome as you. The grunting helps give you that extra push you need on the last 1/4 of the rep when your muscles are burning. As long as it's not done in a gym and over-exaggerated, I don't think anyone has a problem with it. Again, the guy isn't cocky, so why would you even open your mouth. It's your pretentious self-gratifying tone that irritates us. But you do rock, no doubt.

Hi, I was wondering how I would build my fore-arms from the elbow down? I wanted to know this because I have a natural build on my arms but my fore-arms "elbow to wrist" are tiny? thanks =D.
I was observing your "Killer Home Chest Workout" video, and had a few questions.
#1
I've been working out for about 6 months on and off. I am now starting to get serious and doing it consistantly. as an intermediate lifter,I should do sets one after the other? I have been doing 10 rep, of say, dumbell raises, resting 30 s, 10 rep, rest 30 s, go to failure, rest 1 m and move on to the next exercise.
You are very helpful for myself and I am sure you have positively influenced many lives.TY
hey scooby, my brother and I stumbled upon your youtube videos and explored around your website. A lot of great material and thank you for giving back to the community. I'm 22 and hes 19 - we are now following your advanced workout routine and loving it. We are focusing more on form now and slow reps. Appreciate the work you have put into your website and videos.
Hey Scooby, I am a big fan of your videos and I use all your killer workouts at home and it's awesome man, thanks. I'm only 14 but I'm really buff. I've got a question, how can I do this exercise if I don't have dumbbells with collars?
If you dont have dumbbells, you can do these on a smooth hardwood floor by putting a potholder under each hand, the cloth slides easily on the wood just as the dumbbell rolls over the carpet
Hey Scooby, I visited your website and it said the best way to increase strength and muscle mass is by powerlifting and bodybuilding respectively. Is there a difference between the two, and what is it?
I'll save scooby the work and answer this one. Bodybuilding is when you train to look good(obviously a favorite of the most shallow, self-centered people on the face of the earth) specifically working towards building size, while maintaining muscle syymetry, and staying as lean as possible. Powerlifting is training to raise your 1-rep maximum on the squat, deadlift, and bench press, effectively increasing your strength drastically.
Hi, I'm 13 years old and i workout. I usually do situps ( im changing to crunches after seeing your video) and pushups. But I'm not sure of how effective it really is. Could you tell me a good positive workout for a kid my age that will build up muscle and burn fat? I do play sports (hockey, and im usually active outside) I just think this is a topic i do not know much about, so any help is greatly appreciated.
hi im 18 and whilst i was doing some pushups, i experienced some loud clicking in the elbow joints. they are never painful, but they do click occasionally, and quite loudly as well.
what's going on, should i give it a break?
and what do you mean when you said avoid injuries? what are the most common types injuries which beginners are likely to suffer
I have a question-My regular workout is like this-warmup pushups, situps, squat's and i repeat it for 3times.I use the warmup instead of cardio. Then I follow youre intermediate training program,example:mon:chest-Dumbell flys, dumbell press, then incline dumbell press,
Then I go to triceps.I do every of these exercises 3sets of 8-12.
and then ab crunches.
I worry about is-could I be overtraining this way ?
And could it be bad to do the warm up mon, wed, fri, instead of doing the cardio?
Linkinparknumb it is a ligament that you have overused. The only thing you can do and it is what your body is telling you to do is stay off of those exercises or any of them that give you that pain for awhile. Learn some Leg Exercises. I think that should be key at your age.
Great vid Scoobie, I was having a bit of a play doing these the other day, after watching your video about using pressup-stands to take pressure off the wrists. taking your advice and dieting weight off to get lean before I get back into weights seriously again, it aint easy lol... gone from 102kg down to 93kg so far...got a wee way to go yet don't think i'm loosing muscle but at 192cm tall I don't want to end up being too skinny might stop at 90kg
I have a question for you.I have a step exerciser, but my Physical Therapy teacher told me that it enlarges my upper tights...is it true??thanks and a lot of kisses from Portugal*******
I would trust your physical therapist! My guess though is that your step exerciser wont enlarge your upper thighs any more than walking or jogging would, it really takes resistance training to make the muscles bigger.
If you are not sure if you can do these then you are very wise to avoid them, you need to be really strong to do these safely which is why I emphasize that they are for advanced bodybuilders.
I've got four more exercises coming that are not as 'edgy' at this one.
15 years old? You'd want to be working more on your lean muscles, and focus on bulking up later (around 17-18) depending on your genes. Try doing alot of ab,pushup,chin/pull up exercises that deal with your body weight, then slowly add light-moderate weights to them. Free weights are good too, just have to know how. Try finding a good weight where you can do 10 reps X 3 sets without throwing your back(if you throw your back, decrease the weight as it's too heavy). also do cardio and eat right.
At 15 I wouldnt be working out - focus on your basketball. Getting bulkier (ie fatter) will hurt your basketball game, not help it. What will help your game the most is to work on your running/sprinting. You could also do some occasional jump training, but not too much, you dont want to have bad knees before you can drive.
wowwee. in a few months i'll try these and probably not want to even lift the toilet seat for a few days and then make a big mess. thanks for all the fun ideas!!!!
but the thing is the pain is located at the tip of the left side of my right elbow...at the verrryyy tip where the bone is...is that the tendon still?
hey scooby ive been having some elbow pains lately especially when doing exercises involving nmy triceps near my elbow... whats the problem? the tendons or my triceps? it cant be a bruise since its been over 3 months
Keep working on that cardio and try to build it up to 30min every day. Jumping rope for 30 min is pretty intense, you might try a combo of jogging and jumping rope.
I think the 'perfect pushup' stands are fine. IMHO the twisty motion isnt valuable but they are fine as stands.
The 160lb quoted is for the entire set, probably including bars so you would probably only get two 65lb dumbbells out of it. Look on craigslist, you can find a set dirt cheap.
hey scooby ive been having some elbow pains lately especially when doing exercises involving nmy triceps near my elbow... whats the problem? the tendons or my triceps? it cant be a bruise since its been over 3 months
Hey Scooby, another great video!! I do have a question though. I used to weigh 215 with at 5'10" but over 2 years I dropped my weight to 150 through extensive cardiovascular exercise and a natural, vegetarian diet. I was overweight since I was a child but now I'm 22. My question has to do with loose skin and bodybuilding. After dropping so much weight do u think it is possible to get those 6 pack abs and lean appearance of a body builder with all the extra loose skin or will my results suffer?
Congratulations on dropping from 215 to 150! Thats pretty incredible! I'm sure you can get a 6-pack if you drop your bodyfat enough, the question is if you will have skinfolds. I dont have any experience there. You are young and your skin is very elastic so you have everything going for you. I would drop your bodyfat down to 8%ish and keep it there a year and see what happens. The extra skin might go away of its own accord.
The 160lb weight set is 160lbs total, including bars so you would probabaly only get two 70lbs dumbbells out of it.
Keep working at the jumping rope! For weight loss and general fitness, you need 20-30min a day of cardio. You might try jogging and stop every 5 min to do 3min of jumping rope till your 30min is up.
Nice video Scooby. Could you do one, maybe, on how to burn fat without eating into muscle? I want to have a sprinter style physique you see, but I have 15%body fat. I'm muscley enough, but I want to get down to 8% really. You seem to have both nailed. What's good to do?
I do plan on doing a nutrition, diet, and getting ripped video but that is a month or two off. Nothing earth shattering. Small meals every 3hrs, each with protein, lots of veggys, and very little fat. Lift weights regularly as normal. Lose weight slowly, about 1 pound per week, and you can lose bodyfat while adding muscle.
If you try to exhale while contracting you will turn blue in the face from lack of oxygen if you do really slow reps like I suggest. Try just breathing normally and dont try to sync it up with your lifting.
No, actually I didnt. I had never heard of inshape4u till your post. I didnt look at his vid but it looks like he uses the "sliding towel on a hardwood floor" technique that stonermike mentioned but not dumbbells as I use here. In any case, I am sure that someone else on this planet has done these decades before there even was a youtube.

Hey Scooby, I am a big fan of your videos and I use all your killer workouts at home and it's awesome man, thanks. I'm only 14 but I'm really buff. I've got a question, how can I do this exercise if I don't have dumbbells with collars?
sepstupidstuntsryan 3 years ago
Hey sepstupidstuntsryan,
If you dont have dumbbells, you can do these on a smooth hardwood floor by putting a potholder under each hand, the cloth slides easily on the wood just as the dumbbell rolls over the carpet
scooby1961 3 years ago
Hey Scooby, I visited your website and it said the best way to increase strength and muscle mass is by powerlifting and bodybuilding respectively. Is there a difference between the two, and what is it?
SmashingJack420 3 years ago

Nick14Lenehan 3 years ago 8
Hey Nick,
IMHO, you are way too young to be thinking about lifting weights, stick to the hockey for now.

If i want to be strong for football season as a Linebacker and Tight End, is it more important to have strong legs or arms?
bigbrossif101 3 years ago
Hey bigbrossif101,
For football you want to be like a T-Rex dinosaur - all legs, the arm are mainly for show :)
scooby1961 3 years ago
legs by far, but neglecting arms in favor of legs is a bad idea, too.

hi im 18 and whilst i was doing some pushups, i experienced some loud clicking in the elbow joints. they are never painful, but they do click occasionally, and quite loudly as well.
what's going on, should i give it a break?
and what do you mean when you said avoid injuries? what are the most common types injuries which beginners are likely to suffer
thanks

Hi Scooby,
I already asked you on your bent over bar bell row vid:
How do you train your muscle that are in between your bladebones?
the muscle is responsable for pulling the bladebones togehther.
thanks
killermiller6666 3 years ago
I have a question-My regular workout is like this-warmup pushups, situps, squat's and i repeat it for 3times.I use the warmup instead of cardio. Then I follow youre intermediate training program,example:mon:chest-Dumbell flys, dumbell press, then incline dumbell press,
Then I go to triceps.I do every of these exercises 3sets of 8-12.
and then ab crunches.
I worry about is-could I be overtraining this way ?
And could it be bad to do the warm up mon, wed, fri, instead of doing the cardio?

please please please make a vid showing how I can do calf exercises at home.
PePPaRoZ 3 years ago

Thanks for the great vidoes mate!!

Hi Scooby,how do you do?
I have a question for you.I have a step exerciser, but my Physical Therapy teacher told me that it enlarges my upper tights...is it true??thanks and a lot of kisses from Portugal*******
LoucaPorPolicias 3 years ago
Hello LoucaPorPolicias,
I would trust your physical therapist! My guess though is that your step exerciser wont enlarge your upper thighs any more than walking or jogging would, it really takes resistance training to make the muscles bigger.
scooby1961 3 years ago
That looks dangerous. I tihnk I will wait for your next exercise, but I really need a better pushup exercise.
Nimnoms 3 years ago
Hey Nimnons,
If you are not sure if you can do these then you are very wise to avoid them, you need to be really strong to do these safely which is why I emphasize that they are for advanced bodybuilders.
I've got four more exercises coming that are not as 'edgy' at this one.

does anyone have any good workout videos or advice for a 15 yr old ?
i want to get more fit and a lil bit more musclier/bulkier for basketball.
someone reply pls ? wuld be nice :)
beijingballin 3 years ago
yes..drink milk
oezbek 3 years ago
15 years old? You'd want to be working more on your lean muscles, and focus on bulking up later (around 17-18) depending on your genes. Try doing alot of ab,pushup,chin/pull up exercises that deal with your body weight, then slowly add light-moderate weights to them. Free weights are good too, just have to know how. Try finding a good weight where you can do 10 reps X 3 sets without throwing your back(if you throw your back, decrease the weight as it's too heavy). also do cardio and eat right.
MyOwnMusicTrios 3 years ago
Hey beijingballin,
At 15 I wouldnt be working out - focus on your basketball. Getting bulkier (ie fatter) will hurt your basketball game, not help it. What will help your game the most is to work on your running/sprinting. You could also do some occasional jump training, but not too much, you dont want to have bad knees before you can drive.
scooby1961 3 years ago
wowwee. in a few months i'll try these and probably not want to even lift the toilet seat for a few days and then make a big mess. thanks for all the fun ideas!!!!

Your injury is a tendon that has been over stressed by excessive work load. What exercises have you been doing lately to aggreviate your elbow?
stonermike 3 years ago
french press and ALOT of pushups
linkinparknumb 3 years ago
but the thing is the pain is located at the tip of the left side of my right elbow...at the verrryyy tip where the bone is...is that the tendon still?
linkinparknumb 3 years ago
Scooby - has anybody told you you sound like Matt Frewer (Max Headroom). Kinda look like him too.
Not that that is a bad thing, mind you.
trmblingblustar 3 years ago
Hey trmblingbluestar,
How funny! I though I was the only person left who knew who "Max Headroom" was, that was a pretty amazing (but very short lived) TV series.
Since I like the show, I consider that a great compliment :) I'll have to work on the snapping my jaw shut like he does though

JasonRyu1 3 years ago
Hey JasonRyu1,
Keep working on that cardio and try to build it up to 30min every day. Jumping rope for 30 min is pretty intense, you might try a combo of jogging and jumping rope.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Hey Scooby, thanks for the vids. They have been a great inspiration for me. Just a few questions:
1. I use "Perfect Pushup". Is it good or was it a waste of money?
2. When do you think your site's email will be up? since comments don't allow much room for stuff.
3. On your site there is a link to a 160lb dumbell set. does that mean 80 for each dumbell or 160 for each?
4. I have been doing jump rope every day. I'm up to 5 min (started at 1). Any other tips for cardio? I eat well.
JasonRyu1 3 years ago
Hey Jason,
I think the 'perfect pushup' stands are fine. IMHO the twisty motion isnt valuable but they are fine as stands.
The 160lb quoted is for the entire set, probably including bars so you would probably only get two 65lb dumbbells out of it. Look on craigslist, you can find a set dirt cheap.

Great Vid scooby. Hey what kind of basic excersize do you recommend for me. I am 15 years old, and I weigh about 137 |bs.
triplehat1 3 years ago 2
Hey Scooby, another great video!! I do have a question though. I used to weigh 215 with at 5'10" but over 2 years I dropped my weight to 150 through extensive cardiovascular exercise and a natural, vegetarian diet. I was overweight since I was a child but now I'm 22. My question has to do with loose skin and bodybuilding. After dropping so much weight do u think it is possible to get those 6 pack abs and lean appearance of a body builder with all the extra loose skin or will my results suffer?
Avenger7x 3 years ago
Hey Avenger7x,
Congratulations on dropping from 215 to 150!

I have trouble breathing while doing pushups, and this really holds me back. any tips with it?
Guitartzero 3 years ago
Hey scooby! just gatta say thanks for your vids, they've been a great inspiration for me. Just a few questions:
1. when will your site's email be open? (not much available space on comments)
2. I am doing jump rope every day (I started at 1 min, now I'm up to 6) to cut down on fat. Any tips? I think I eat healthy....
3. On your website there is a link to a 160lb dumbell set. Is that TOTAL 160 or 160 per dumbell? (sorry if it may seem stupid)
thanks again for the vids!
JasonRyu1 3 years ago
Hey JasonRyu1,
The 160lb weight set is 160lbs total, including bars so you would probabaly only get two 70lbs dumbbells out of it.
Keep working at the jumping rope! For weight loss and general fitness, you need 20-30min a day of cardio. You might try jogging and stop every 5 min to do 3min of jumping rope till your 30min is up.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Nice video Scooby. Could you do one, maybe, on how to burn fat without eating into muscle? I want to have a sprinter style physique you see, but I have 15%body fat. I'm muscley enough, but I want to get down to 8% really. You seem to have both nailed. What's good to do?
tommyk77 3 years ago
Hey tommyk77,
I do plan on doing a nutrition, diet, and getting ripped video but that is a month or two off. Nothing earth shattering. Small meals every 3hrs, each with protein, lots of veggys, and very little fat. Lift weights regularly as normal. Lose weight slowly, about 1 pound per week, and you can lose bodyfat while adding muscle.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Great exercise for your burnouts at the end of a chest workout day.
As for the haters, dont worry about them, your vidoes are amazing for begginers to experienced bodybuilders.

Guitartzero 3 years ago
Hey Guitarzero,
If you try to exhale while contracting you will turn blue in the face from lack of oxygen if you do really slow reps like I suggest.
