Been going since 91, every time Fittipaldi's name comes up he gets booed for drinking the OJ. And he deserves it. He was cursed thereafter, had the win locked up the following year and went right into the wall coming out of 4 with 15 laps to go, I'll never forget it. Don't eff with Indy.
Raul Boesel got screwed as would have won this race! (got called for a speeding penalty in the pits which was proven to be erroneous and had a stop and go penalty under green which cost dearly) He was the fastest car all day hands down.
Who says they the Indy cars don't pass as much these days?? What??? With the lone exception of last year, we have seen MORE passing and MORE cars on the lead lap than at any time in the last 30 plus years (that's how many races I've witnessed live at the Speedway so I know what I'm talking about).
I have the 2009 Indy 500 on TiVo and watched it once because the cars are so boring. The '93 cars are so much better despite being 16 years older. Tony George, why did you ruin Indycar?
@encinobalboa Because he wanted to give the little guy as much a chance to win the Indianapolis 500 as the big rich guy. The same concept of taking away single-class in Indiana High School basketball; to "give the little schools a chance to win."
The basketball playoffs have never been close to being back as high as they were, since.
@Mrrobjdav It's not just Tony George, it's the driver&team owner as well. Thing about it: no team racing in IRL in 1996, it's stop right there. Racing is a business, and cart driver were a bit underpaid compare to Nascar drivers back than, plus team owner had to spend a lot of ressource for little revenues in the early 90's... So, the idea was to cut the cost and be a bit "nascar like". We seen similar thing in "IMSA-ALMS/Grand-am" and even F1. The winner of all that was nascar ;)
I agree. When CART first started it wasnt much liked like the IRL is now. All we need is time, turbos, new chassis, and more promotion for crying out loud.
I took a day off of work to watch this year's INDY 500. It wasn't all that exciting. Alot of unknown drivers, or rookie drivers that kept crashing, lack of great battles especially by the last 20-15 laps i turned it off knowing by then Scott Dixon would win.
That part especially turned me off, it was better than last years. At least it wasn't rain shortened, how pathetic that was.
I hope to god it improves in the next few years or im just going to quit watching it altogether.
i'm not trying to knock you when i say this but .........maybe you should stop watching. stick with it or give it up. quit yer bitching and do something positive like......going to a race.
Quite agree with you dude. In fact F1 was fairly stale and very snore what a bore, especially in the Michael Schumacher years. I notice he didn't have the courage to try his hand in Indycars. Probably because the organisers would not have taken to kindly to his tactics of bumping people of the track. I love Indycar racing because of the variety of tracks used. Streets, 1 Mile Ovals, Super Speedways, and Road Courses. Enough Said!
They ran turbocharged engines at Indianapolis for thirty years. The reliability had to do with how hard they were pushing new designs, not any inherent weakness in turbocharged engines.
Some of us wish they'd allow TCs on engines so long as they're considerably smaller: challenge the designers to keep improving the breed, just as always happens in golden ages.
I agree with you. The Cart/Champcars always sounded much better than IRL Cars. The first design (non-turbo) of IRL Cars, sounded like a constipated Bumble Bee, or somebody blowing a raspberry. Turbos for ever.
But The turbos do sound better to some people anyways. When I say some people thats a fact because If I say most = that's an opinion. In my humble opinion they fit Indy just right.
In a oval race they run side by side actually pass....... Racing is passing. I love any type of racing (including F1) and enjoy watching all types of races. Be a little more open minded, you may be suprised at what you like. And talk about being easily entertained. Watching a F1 race and seeing 3 cars get passed the entire race. How entertaining is that?
dont let it fool you, there was another side to this story, the CART guys were being a-holes too, remember there are 2 sides to a disagreement,
I regularly watch the IRL and think its great and very competitive, sure I hope for a solution soon, but im not going to blame only Tony George and the IRL for the split.
oh and by the way i do watch F-1 and like it but it tends to get a bit boring when every race is won by 1 minute, just my opinion though
I was at this. I just want to personally thank Tony George for ruining Open wheel in this country, you a-hole! Boycott the IRL! Never have seen them and NEVER will!
I appreciate you posting these great videos. Watching these videos makes me sad to think of the current Indy 500 situation. Oh well, At least I can go watch Al Unser Jr. qualify this year!
Thank god after all these years, the turbo-charged engines are back.

To tell you the truth... Tony George and Kevin Kalkhoven need to get this Unification on the road.
Indy will do just that becoming together not this BS IRL and CCWS is giving.
And one thing bring back the turbocharger back at Indy... its been absent for 11 years.

It's quite surprising that Emmo won the 77th indy500.
The reason why he was infamous of that 500:
He drank bottle of orange juice rather than milk!
