Well... firstly, the one thing that really has Naruto stand out ahead of other Shounen is that the characters live in a very deadly world and they all accept that it is their purpose to complete their mission or die trying. You'll realise as you go on in the anime that that purpose has a very large impact on Kakashi's past. The fact is that a lot of the characters in the anime live and die so that the village can survive. They don't hold back and sometimes it genuinely hurts.
