I entirely disagree with your part about children and guns. If you restrict or hide something from them that will only make them curious. If you teach them and let them handle and shoot firearms the curiosity goes away and it becomes of lesser interest.
Very nice ammo storage. I use the military surplus steel cans to keep my ammo with gel packets. I keep a small bit outside of the cans to be accessible too, and some in the magazines. Is that a ninja turtles sheet I see? Very cool touch!
you should also think about people who may loot your home, present time or disaster scenario. you may want to make sure noone can peek in the window and see your ammo supply. a half-wall may solve that situation. if its a remote location, a hiker may find your cabin and figure noones around to see him, and steal some ammo.
I buy ALOT of .22 ammo. It cannot be beat for the price per round. It is also very effective for small game like you said, squirrel, rabbit, etc. I have found that you can buy in the 550 round bulk packs cheaper than 50 round packs and pack them in 30 mm film canisters, that you can get free from most film developing places now-a-days. They pack 20-30 rounds easily. If you fit them in, they will do more. Thanks for the posts. Hope this may be something you can use or pass along.
I'd add some sort of wall to the sides of the shelves so you don't have to worry about a box of ammo falling off the ends. Cool setup, Keep up the great work!
what i have done was go with 4 calibers/gauge which are 22lr,9mm,308 win and 12 ga. Everyone in my home has a weapon of this type. Anyone shows up at my home without one of these caliber/gauge are out of luck! Im not going to "stock pile" or "prep" for someone else who might show up witha different caliber of weapon.
Great video, as always. Funny reading the comments-- same thing I hear at the gun club regarding guns. Everybody has an opinion. Far as I'm concerned, they all go bang and guns/ammo are only as accurate as the shooter. And he's not prepping for target shooting at the range. Hitting a dime at 500 yards isn't the reality here--hitting a softball at 100 yards is. And I don't see anything on this rack that wouldn't shoot that.
MOST PREPPERS HAVE WAY TO MUCH AMMO TO BE USING SHELVING. THE SMALLEST DENOMINATION YOU SHOULD HAVE OUT IN THE OPEN FOR EASY ACCESS SHOULD BE A CASE. IF THE STANDARD IS 320 RDS EACH, THAT'S ONLY 3 PEOPLE'S LOAD OUT WORTH TO A CASE...INFACT, AS PREPPERS YOU SHOULD HAVE A STACK OF CASES AS TALL AS YOU ARE, PER PERSON AT A MINIMUM FOR YOUR MAIN BATTLE RIFLE.
What about having things in the ground? I know there may be a issue with ground water. but the temp stay the same in the ground? you could have a dirt hill thing. Thoughts anyone?
@glockman1727ak47 UP IN CANADA WE HAVE BASEMENTS. FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT A BASEMENT, I GUESS YOU'RE SCREWED. YOU'LL HAVE TO BURY IT OR SOMETHING. EVEN A FEW INCHES OF DIRT IS ENOUGH TO SMOOTHEN OUT THE TEMP CURVES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. FREEZING IT WON'T HURT IF IT'S IN A CAN, SO YOU JUST WANNA REDUCE THE DEGREE OF SUDDEN TEMP CHANGES.
@Yankeeprepperasshat Have you heard of a 'wofati building'? if you Google that term you'll find Paul Wheaton's article on Wofati. It more or less looks like a hobbit home. I think you could easily make a shed with stuff for free. Just a lot of time collecting wood. A back hoe would be of a great help. if you piled dirt up then you don't have to worry about a water table. Thanks for the Reply love the username
I said before that I do use federal in some of my guns, some like it the best. That was just my expierience with that particular gun and ammo combination.
As others have commented, you should put all that into surplus ammo cans with some dessicant packs in each to maximize shelf life. Wouldn't hurt to invest in a gun safe either.
Yup, you need more ammo cans. Also, pick up a silver sharpie and MARK what ammo is kept in what ammo can. Black sharpies are fine but you won't be carrying the ammo cans into combat.
To make your ammo last even longer, its good to have a few high powered BB\Pellet guns for small animals. & BB's & pellets takes up very little space.
Try to establish a group standard for your group. This will cut down on the number of calibers needed. If I was starting from scratch, it would be .22lr, 9mm, .308 and 12 gauge. Those would cover most hunting and defense situations. Then keep stocking up, and store in ammo cans to keep dry and easy to move.
forgive my ignorance but wouldnt you need to use a pellet gun for a squirrel or rabbit as the videos ive seen of people shooting prairie dogs with .22 would mean you would have no meat left to eat.
@justmom66 for? hes using his right to bear arms granted in the US constitution. Wouldnt take a good lawyer to get him out of it AND reparations if the atf comes and takes his stuff.
@justmom66 "I would say ... this kind of thing can get the FBI and the ATF on you faster than you can blink." This is perfectly legal to own ammunition, I dont see why those angencies would even care about that.
is it moisture or temperature change or both that you need to be worried about for long term ammo storage? (temp change allows for condensation, is that it?)
In good times, one can be picky about the ammo one purchases. in a SHTF/WROL situation, ammo is ammo. It is always a wise idea to have some inexpensive/cheap ammo to trade/barter. On occasion, I do purchase ammo that I would not shoot in my weapons, but would trade to others. I still would use if needed.
Organization is the key to success! Or in this case, the key to survival. Ohh FN-FAL. My favorite. Ice chest is a good idea. And yes, you are only slightly insane. Like the rest of us. God Bless.
I would have the "grab and go" 223 and 7.62 in magazines so you can be sure you are as quick as possible. Just rotate them monthly to assure spring integrity over the long haul.
@survivalistboards I just load 25 rounds in a 30 round mag and streach the springs every 3 or 6months. I have had good luck doing this with both ar-15 and ak-47 and ak-74 mags.
@survivalistboards FYI, there is no reason to rotate loaded stored magazines. Unless using very old magazines, current magazines have quality enough springs where "spring memory" is not an issue. that is an old myth based or poor spring manufacturing materials rather than the misconception that springs will "fatigue" over time. It is a basic mechanical engineering principle of springs. Regardless...great video. Keep it up.
@survivalistboards i agree on the magazine thing but the spring integrity part is not needed if you leave a spring compressed it will return when a magazine is cycled is where the dammage will come from. its just like if you take a piece of metal and bend it back and forth eventually it wil break
@BANGBANG73 go fire some then. after even 5 rounds of Remington, my bore is nearly black from unburnt powder. ive found Federal is cleanest burning but Winnies are a bit more accurate.
@TheKodiak72 I agree with Kodiak. I won't buy anything made by Remington anymore. They've really gone downhill on ammo AND firearm quality. They recall ammo monthly.
I would also put all that ammo in ammo box's for long term storage. they're cheap to buy used at "cheaper than dirt".
@survivalistboards I would not listen to the trolls and keep stacking as much as you can, whatever it is. When a good deal comes along grab it. Get the high end stuff for your primary/secondary go to weapons. Any ammo will be good to store, it will all be currency in the future, and I guarantee you the guy saying monarch blows wont be thinking that when he is trading his last (fill in the blank) for 1 rd or whatever you dictate as necessary. Good luck and God bless.

You should have alot more 9mm because it is one of the most popular ammo types in handguns and for people who have a mp5 or similar weapon
