Well, Firefox will not always protect you from such things. Talking about browser bugs or bugs in plugins in general, you might also consider to enable DEP and ASLR on your system. Of course, it is possible to bypass these countermeasures too, but not in every situation.
The problem these days is that normal websites get compromised and visitors allow every content of these sites, because they trust them. The NoScript plugin can't help in such situations.
My solution: just disable java script and flash in your browser.

Very good demos, it clearly shows how just by browsing the web your machine can get infected.
To protect myself from these kind of exploits, you show in the demos, I use firefox and noscript extension.
