i remember when this movie aired and within a few months after a bubble gum company tried to cash in on it's popularity and hired the guy who played Bubba for their commercial and at the end of the commercial he would pop up with a silly look on his face and yell out ''Hubba Bubba!''
@Ebenezershnezer81 His mother tried to hide him, as I recall. It's been a LOOOOONG time since I'e seen it. Why she thought this was gonna help, I dunno. But, the way this movie was written, directed, and acted far outshines anything being produced in the horror franchise today, in my opinion. Gone are the days of suspense, of genuine dread. Now we are just bombarded with blood and bodies torn to pieces. Horror? No, gore. And that's gross.
@Purplecatsoup30 No, im sure there was a reason for him being up there (for better or worse), but they just shot him for no good reason. You'd think they'd try to help a whining man tied to a poll, but they just shot him. And, yeah, those gore 'horror' movies are stupid.
My mom was scared shitless as a kid by a movie involving a scarecrow and it really creeps her out but she doesn't remember the name of the movie, just some scenes. I looked into it and I believe it was this movie... that scarecrow is quite haunting. Especially with those big eyes in the first scene.
Perfect example of how you don't need gore or cheesy CGI effects to make a great scary movie. You just need a great storyline. I was ten (like many others posting here) when I saw this. I hadn't seen it in 29 YEARS since its original airing in 1981 and rented it from Netflix this week and it STILL holds-up. It really hasn't dated at all, especially with the top-notch restoration they did.
I haven't seen this movie since it first came out in 1981. I was 13 at the time. It is up there with "The Night Stalker" and "'Salem's Lot" as one of the best TV horror movies of all time. The people putting out horror movies today need to sit down and watch this movie to see how it is REALLY done. Strong acting, strong story, strong direction, & creepy atmosphere. Today's horror fans wouldn't know a good horror movie if it came up and bit them in the you know where!
AngelofAngush, I was only about 7 when I saw it, and at my uncle's house in the middle of nowhere. Was having a bit of a sleepover with other cousins, but I got stuck sleeping in the rear bedroom by myself. And it didn't help it was windy that night, like in the movie. Ooohhh! I was terrified. Slept with the blankets over my head that night, if I slept at all. And I haven't seen any of them other movies, but I'll check them out.
@cheapcape Actually, there was another: Stephen King's "Salem's Lot" - the original version with David Soul and Bonnie Bedelia...and gruesome reggie Nalder as the eerie vampire, Barlow!
@Titan52berg I love the original Salem's Lot which also starred Ed Flanders. But I still think DNOTSC is just a notch above SL because of the amazingly eerie atmosphere. It just has Halloween written all over it. SL has an eerie atmosphere, but not necessarily an October one. I would pick SL as my second favorite TV horror movie followed by Midnight Offerings.
A close second on my list of the best horror movies of all time (The Haunting with Julie Harris is the first). Shows what a good story can do, even without a big budget and costly special effects.
The good news--this movie is due for DVD release towards the end of September. I've already put my order in.
After this first aired, years later this movie would come on from time to time here in Alabama on WCOV 20. I remember them playing the trailer and the fat guy saying "it was bubba"!!!!!
Man. This was one of my favorites. My uncle and I used to walk it all the time on the old recorded version he had. I've been trying to find it forever and now its out on dvd. SCORE !!!!!
I remember seeing this when it aired in 1981. I was only 5, and it was THIS scene, and it went right to commercial break before they shot him. I didn't understand what was going on, but I was terrified by the man hiding in the scarecrow. My parents turned it off because I couldn't handle it. The imagery of the scarecrow with the human eyes gave me nightmares for a while. Thanks for uploading this!
The one and only time I have ever seen this movie was when I was about nine, sitting up late at night on my own. It has stuck with me ever since and I have always wanted to see it again. My fave scene has to be when Bubba passes her the flower. I am so glad I came across this!!! Cheers!!
my dad was in this movie a few years before i was born. i remember watching it a lot when i was real young. this and children of the corn had the biggest impact on me because i grew up in a very rural part of southern california. watching this is so inspirational for some reason; it makes me wish i could terrorize a small town after i'm dead.
Give me THIS KIND of movie, or almost any "old school" horror movie, in general, ANYTIME or DAY! In my opinion, a darn good or excellent, excuse to ignore what the public accepts as "horror," TODAY!
the charles durning character, the mailman, is a pedo who seems jealous of the relationship the retarded guy has with the young girl in the beginning even though it's innocent.
and then after nice retard guy is wrongly killed his ghost gets revenge on the guys who killed him one by one. and it seems like as a ghost he was smarter than in life by the ways he would kill each guy.
someone needs to upload this in parts a like movies that set a creepy atmosphre no all the crap thats out today saw and what not cookie cutter movies.
I love this movie..They definitely don't make them like that anymore. The best scary movies are the one's that creep you out, not gross you out in my book. The first time I saw this movie I was spending the weekend at my aunt and uncle's house and watched it. I believe I was 7. I agree, however these types of films probably do not make alot of money at the box office. So hollywood will play it safe with a formula that will rake in the bucks such as slasher and gore pics. I discovered this movie by chance and was very impressed.
@fatbaby73 Were you watching this film ALONE and IN THE DARK? If so, I CAN'T blame you for being or getting scared! I gotta' watch this one, AGAIN. Saw it many years ago, and UNFORTUNATELY, DON'T REMEMBER ANY OF IT :( .

Ha ha, like the other posters (showing their age!) I've not seen this since about 1980 when I was 10. Made-for-TV horror films were so awesome back then, and I'm glad to see some kind folks have uploaded them to YouTube.
Now, if someone uploads a copy of The Horror at 37 000 Feet with William Shatner, I can die happy! :)
God, how long has it been since I watched this movie?! I mean, in the 80's every year before Halloween, they'd show this one and I'd be scared to death! I felt so sorry for Bubba. Poor man.
Its interesting. Its back from the time before the TV networks wentfor the lowest common denominator and you still had to come up with original programming rather than rehashing the same formula over and over again. The basic cable channels and premium channels have revived the concept with some of the new shows that have cropped up like "The Shield", "Battlestar Galactica","The Closer","Sex and the City", "The Soprannos", ect. This movie is classic horror that was produced bythe movieoftheweek
Remember the scene in the courtroom when all of the killers were set free and the mother of Bubba said she would get her revenge? I think the lawyer was behind it all because he really felt sorry for Bubba and mom.
Such a shame how much cable costs these days with all the crap they have on. I loved this movie and it hasn't been on tv in years. Back then when cable was cheap all the good movies were on like this and Motel Hell, Chiefs, Squirm and so many others. Movies of the 70's and 80's were the best, thanx so much for posting this.
For a made for tv horror this was great,i havn't seen it in 20 years, when i saw the episode of Supernatural with the scarecrow it reminded me of it,cool film.
It's amazing reading the comments below. We've all had the same experience when we 1st saw this in the 80s. We remembered it all these years, and now through the internet we are looking it up.
Isn't it funny how we just expect to have everything we had as a kid lol. This movie brings back so many memories of me and my bro's and sis's all freaked out at home watching this!
OMG I love this movie. I seen it when I was a kid and it scared the crap out of me. Does anyone have the whole movie they could download? I would love to see it
This movie scared you in a subtle way. It was not in your face violent. It sneaked up in you and made the hairs on your arm stand up. It made you feel like you were alone in the dark with someone watching your every move. Some may feel it's corny by today's standards, but for a 1981 made for tv movie, it rocked! And it still does in my opinion. It's a great movie to watch with mixed company in the dark with popcorn.
this was made in 79' when i was 11 and yes i watched it when i was 11 on tv.....it scared the fuckin shit out of me........it still does and im 39 freakin years old....klassic by the great charles durning who is 85' and still alive......god bless
One of my favorite movies of all time. Saw it on public television in the mid 80s. I didn't even know it was a made for tv movie until a decade later. Great movie.
This movie scared me so bad when I was kid, but it also made me mad at those guys, it made me cry, and made me feel happy at the end of the movie when the girl and bubba could still be friends. Such a good scary movie.
Hi Max! I so loved this movie when it first came out. I saw it several times. I felt so bad for the scarecrow! It shows how humans jump to conclusions and act on impulse to hurt the innocent. Good send!
I love that line. This tv movie gave me nightmares. So did "Trilogy of Terror" (the Zuni doll chasing after Karen Black) and "Bad Ronald" (Scott Jacoby living behind a wall and terrorizing young girls who live in the house). These were all TV movies! And "Don't be Afraid of the Dark" with those little orange gremlins calling out "SALLY!" And of course,"Stephen King's' It"...Tim Curry as Pennywise the evil clown!
Oh yeh!!! I love all those movies, I love horror flicks! Pennywise scared the "crap" out of me! I love Tim Curry though! Hehe! Youre a man after my own heart! :)
i saw dont be afraid of the dark...on tv babysittin my sister one night when i was 13 years old.......scared the fuckin shit out of me more than any other movie hands down....in fact i'll never forget it for the rest of my life....it was uploaded in here i watched the entire thing on you tube last winter...wanna talk a bout a trip down memory lane ..with a few beers my hair was standin up on the back of my neck....and i'm a 39 year old roofer (male) to boot....scary shit that sally........
I haven't seen this since the night it was broadcast. It chilled the hell out of me. Looked for it here after watching some "Kiss and the Phantom of the Park". Viva la technology my fellow children of the 80s! Viva...
I remeber this great movie....like most that disappear. THe 80s was full of great movies that have become forgotten...Runaway Train,An American Werewolf in London,Bigfoot. My favorite part "Bubba didn`t do it,Bubba didn`t do it." Great music too!
This movie rocked. I still like this better than any Holywood horror. I wonder why you can't buy it? Anyone remember another TV one called "the Car"? That was good too.
This is the only made-for-TV movie I recall EVER truly enjoying. And, yeah, as a kid, it freaked me out, too. Even though my friends and I only saw it that first time on network TV, the phrase "Bubba didn't do it!" became the default, sarcastic response any time any of us were accused of something.
This movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. My friend and I snuck out of the house after watching it and we ran into some guys halloween scarecrow decoration. We screamed all the way back to the house!!! lol
one of the best made for tv shows of it's time. early 1980. one of my fave movies. thanks for sharing. a remake of this classic film would be amazing if the right person carefully wrote this and directed. poor bubba. makes me sad to think these guys killed him but his revenge is sweet! thanks for posting! happy halloween everyone!!!
I like revenge horror movies better than normal horror movies, but I guess they're not as effective because you actually want the people being pursued to die. But that's some pretty awesome cinematography even if the guys death hand-stretch thing was too cliche for words.
or setting a tone anymore. Remember when horror films used to have unique scores set to them? Now they just recycle a score from another film for the trailers and use what ever songs are currently popular on the radio for the film. No creativity anymore.
i remember when this movie aired and within a few months after a bubble gum company tried to cash in on it's popularity and hired the guy who played Bubba for their commercial and at the end of the commercial he would pop up with a silly look on his face and yell out ''Hubba Bubba!''

I haven't seen this movie for a while either. It's eerie. A lot of the made for TV horror films made back in the 70s and early 80s tended to be.
bandibreath 3 years ago
God, how long has it been since I watched this movie?! I mean, in the 80's every year before Halloween, they'd show this one and I'd be scared to death! I felt so sorry for Bubba. Poor man.
monmichka77 3 years ago

If they make a remake, I think Sam Dingle from Emmerdale should play Bubba.

wait is this the one where he chops off people's heads? and there's a high school kid running from the scarecrow?

It's amazing reading the comments below. We've all had the same experience when we 1st saw this in the 80s. We remembered it all these years, and now through the internet we are looking it up.

This is one of the best scene in the entire film. But without the awesome build up, people can't see it in it's full glory.
Everyone IN THE WORLD needs to see this movie.

Good send!

Hi
Barbara...
Remember..."Bubba didn't do it!"...LOL
I love that line. This tv movie gave me nightmares. So did "Trilogy of Terror" (the Zuni doll chasing after Karen Black) and "Bad Ronald" (Scott Jacoby living behind a wall and terrorizing young girls who live in the house). These were all TV movies! And "Don't be Afraid of the Dark" with those little orange gremlins calling out "SALLY!" And of course,"Stephen King's' It"...Tim Curry as Pennywise the evil clown!
Pax,
Max

This is the only made-for-TV movie I recall EVER truly enjoying. And, yeah, as a kid, it freaked me out, too. Even though my friends and I only saw it that first time on network TV, the phrase "Bubba didn't do it!" became the default, sarcastic response any time any of us were accused of something.

one of the best made for tv shows of it's time. early 1980. one of my fave movies. thanks for sharing. a remake of this classic film would be amazing if the right person carefully wrote this and directed. poor bubba. makes me sad to think these guys killed him but his revenge is sweet! thanks for posting! happy halloween everyone!!!

I like revenge horror movies better than normal horror movies, but I guess they're not as effective because you actually want the people being pursued to die. But that's some pretty awesome cinematography even if the guys death hand-stretch thing was too cliche for words.

Yeah, they just don't make like they used to.
Film makers don't seem to care much about pacing
or setting a tone anymore. Remember when horror films used to have unique scores set to them? Now they just recycle a score from another film for the trailers and use what ever songs are currently popular on the radio for the film. No creativity anymore.
