  • We sang this in church this morning at Mary Immaculate in Farmers Branch TX...

  • Brilliant singing! Powerful! Awesome!

  • What can one say when a soul wants to talk to its Creator?

  • Thank you Papa Dorsey. These words and melody have seen me through much in this life.

  • i first became aware of Professor Dorsey back in '76, introduced by a fellow film editor, this is glorious.

  • Praise the Lord!!! What a testimony, I'm sure he is in Heaven playing and having good time with that child he never got a chance to see....

  • What about what then, stand by me and if you see my saviour.

  • Beloved song shows how this man let God use his pain to stream God's comfort and glory through to all of us. Could I do this? Only as I take His hand and hang on tight. Don't turn away from God in your pain, hand on tighter! thank you, Mr. Dorsey, I'll see you in Heaven.

  • We all meet again in heaven!

  • Amen to prescious lord I also believe that who ever we lost is in the next room and it is a matter of time until we enter the next room where we reunite please give thanks to our lord and savior Amen God Bless you

  • I did not know the story behind this song either, but, it is my all time favorite song, it makes me cry everytime I heard it, because it sounds like it was made for me, my daughter passed in my arms, it was devasting, this song helps me and I hope it helps others, it is a beautiful song the words are GODLY, and so heart felt. God is Good..........

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. . . I've been there, and this song is an inspiration. Just keep on holding on to its message. One day you and your daughter will meet again! She's just in "the next room. . . not far away at all, only a prayer, thought away.

  • I didn't know the story about how this song came to life. I love this song and it has even more meaning since I know what Mr. Dorsey experienced for these words to be birthed. Many have precious Lord experiences and this just lets us know who to depend on...the Lord our Savior who can keep us through it all.

  • shoutout to reli 157, whatup Megan, Nick, Aj, Tamir, and Adrianna

  • Amen brother! Please don't forget about the Quartet rendition of Precious Lord by The Original Soul Seekers.

  • what a beautiful and moving rendention of this song. i love it.

we all need to say this as a prayer

  • @hiprazer1972 Type in Mahalia Jackson by Marie Guillian you will be blessed.

  • Music lovers' experience is not complete without Thomas A. Dorsey. However, this explanation of how he came to write "Precious Lord" differs a little from the documentary "Say Amen, Somebody" (a must ) in that an aquaintence gave him the word "precious" when talking about the death of his wife.

  • Thomas wrote these words, and the likes of people like Marion, and Mahalia, Delores Barrett uplift your hearts with their angelic voices

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful song and singer and information about writer..

  • I went to a church singing tonight at the Children's Home in Mount Dora, Florida. The song leader read the story of "Precious Lord" a song I'd sung for years. I can never sing it the same way again. Thank God men with such talents can share their gifts for generations to come. Redemption, friends, what can be sweeter than that?

  • I just received an e-mail which is circulating saying Tommy Dorsey (band leader from 40's) wrote this. If you get it, put the story right, Thomas A Dorsey, an evangelist, wrote it and needs to be credited with such a blessing :-)

  • Yes! Thomas A. Dorsey was formerly the blues entertainer Georgia Tom (not Tommy Dorsey! ) In his lifetime he wrote about 300 gospel songs. Precious Lord was written in 1932 after he learned his wife and newborn baby had died.

  • Actuall Rev Dorsey wrote 700 songs.

  • The only time we get music like this in my staunch white church is when I sing it myself. I know I can't do it justice, but it brings tears to the congregation each time I try. I wish we could do more of this kind of music.

  • Yes, but I love 'Tight like that' too!

  • Yes Marion did sang this song; however, i must say Ms. Mahalia Jackson song it better.

  • well i must say they both put they foot in it.

  • This is my favorite song and she shonuff sang it to the fullest. I thought Mahalia did the best but now that I have heard Marion. I think Ive seen precious lord sung to the fullest.

  • God bless your Soul Mr.Dorsey.

  • Let the church say Amen !

Does anybody remember seeing Marion Williams on a PBS special about the song " Amazing Grace " ? She tore that one up also.

  • Clara Ward and Brother Joe May have also recorded colossal versions of this song. Aretha Franklin's youthful version is a close copy of her idol Clara's recording. Ruth Davis recorded the lyric to the tune of Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love." C. L. Franklin's version is hair-raising. I even enjoy Dr. C. J. Johnson's down-home version. It was Sister Rosetta Tharpe's last request, and her pal Marion Williams sang it at the funeral. The song did wonders for them all!

  • There are two live recordings of Marion singing "Precious Lord," the first right after the assassination of Dr. King (on her album "My Soul Looks Back") and one at Carnegie Hall with Mr. Dorsey standing right beside her (on her album "Remember Me.") Each version stands on its own. She never repeated herself, that's what made her so great. But if you want to hear her growl and holler, check those versions out. On both she just kills that line, "At the river lord I'll stand."

  • Mahalia Jackson's interpretations are glorious, too, in her magnificent contralto. In any event, "Precious Lord" was the Reverend Dr. King's favorite song, and it's easy to see why.

  • Out of deep respect for Mr. Dorsey and for the song itself, I felt as though the great Marion Williams was holding her immense vocal talent back a bit so that the brilliance of the song could shine through.

  • You know Penn, she probably was. But Dr. Dorsey loved Mrs. Williams voice so much, that he hand picked her to sing this song on this recording. A testimony to her anointed singing.

  • Yes, she incorporates her vocal flourishes so softly and carefully and respectfully. I can hear it and feel it...

  • @PurpleSnowman29 Thanks fot sharing this story and song on YouTube.Jesse Hendrix.

  • @PennTrafford omg yes,,i idnt this when my aunt,my second mom die,and again when we lost a friend and fellow musician last yr! ive not go vocals like marion but i gave it a shot!

  • @PennTrafford omg yes,,i idnt this when my aunt,my second mom die,and again when we lost a friend and fellow musician last yr! ive not go vocals like marion but i gave it a shot!

  • Masterpiece. The first gospel recording to be included in the National Registry of the Library of Congress.

  • Amen!! SuperMasterpiece. I just thought everyone should hear this awesome testimony. I love Dr. Dorsey's testimony and I love Mrs. Williams as soloist.
