  • The prevoius speaker is definitley right. Hagen in Wagner`s Götterdämmerung is Frick`s most remakable and outstanding role and this very recording one of the strongest portrayals.

  • There are two qualities I love about Gottlob Frick's Hagen: first, his pitch wanders outside the lines slightly (I think this works equally well for someone playing Alberich, as it's all part of the slyness and angst of their personae); and, second, he often sings with his mouth to the side, crooked like the character of Hagen. Just from observing his drawn, darkly-hewn features, and watching him portray the role, one would almost imagine the part was written specifically for him.

  • Terrific, like a lava flow

  • MY RESPECT TO THE GREATEST HAGEN OF ALL TIME.

  • @unethicaldenier not sure, but he did star as Hagen in the 1964 DG Solti Ring recording of Gotterdammerung, that was GOOD!

  • @antigonosphilos Antigone?You've got to be joking,right?If not,where's your clip,genius?

  • His recordings with Wunderlich are not to be missed. They were a perfect match.

  • the profundity & depth of the beauty of this vocalist in this scene is beyond words

  • In my humble opinion this is the greatest Bass we have recorded singing Wagner... the voice is 'as black as the earl of hells waistcoat'. Bravo!!!

  • Genial.

  • Oh, this is marvellous!

  • Amazing in it's beauty. Bravo! Thank you James for this great singer unknown to me no longer.

  • Great recording! If anyone has Martti Talvela singing this please post! Both are superb Wagnerians.

  • Frick was incredible, but this isn't his best. The '62 recording of Lohengrin: perfect King Henry.

  • Frick's voice was perfect for Wagner's operas, wish to have more recordings of him. I believe Kurt Moll should be great too in this piece.

  • Great bass Thanks for posting

  • Superb. But you should also check out Matti Salminen's version.

  • Yes, I agree. I think Salminen's performance is the best I've heard of more up-to-date readings. Both voices send shivers down the spine!
