do anyone know how can you record like a proffesional band...i mean...is it better to record 1)part-part,2)every drum separately or 3)all the song a once?
@lolaslidar It depends. Vocals are usually cut seperately. Personally, i like the energy of a band(drums bass guitar) being recorded together. Overdub solo's, doubles, fills, vocals, harmonies, etc.
Ok, lets see if i got it straight: 1 sm57, 3 R121, 2 sm7b, 2 ma100, 1 r122, 1 r122v, 1 ma 201, 1 sf12, 1 ma 200, 2 md421. Ok, it is 14 mics, and 15 channel (sf 12 is a stereo mic). Those mics by themselves cost 16100 dollars, and now you put in that count a 15 channel interface, 15 pre amps, cables, stands, a fucking nice room, compressors, limiters, etc, etc, etc... See how cheap it is to get a good drum sound ? :D I would say the equipment on this video (including the drums) were AT LEAST 40k
Other than the Senheiser 421s and the SM7bs its all Royer. Don't forget the $3k worth of Mohave Audios which is an off-shute of Royer. More or less this was one big Royer commercial. Its Royer just in case the name was forgotten after watching this........Royer
I just use my mics to hit the drums instead of sticks. I go through a lot of $4,000 Royer mics that way but not as many as they used to set this drum recording up.
@ryancangri one technique would be the one credited for John Bonham: one cardioid condenser as an overhead two lengths of a drum stick above the kick drum leg's knee, and one, preferably dynamic, for the bass drum. It's mono, yes, but very balanced and aah! so vintage ;)
People what you are hearing is Michael Wagener, and not the mics! Give MW some cheap dynamics, and he will came up with sounds, that some of you would even prefer. The belief that sound depend on big money, is like assuming that you need a Ferrari to learn how to drive. If you dont know how to control the acustics of your recording spaces probably the Royers will sound worse then SM 57s, 52A, etc. If you do have a pro recording sound, and you want to change it a bit, then Roy yourself.
Like every other TOP 100 album you can use 2 SM57's 3 MD 421's 1 AKG D112 and a stereo pair of sm81's and youll have a bitching sound while saving 10 g's
@ryancangri You can do it with two mics but the most prominent sound will have to be the kick drum so you have to place your two omnidirectional condensers out front but reasonably high about cymbal height so that they get a bit of kick.. You'd have to tune your snare to be quite poppy so it breaks the mix over a distance because when you move the mics out front you get a lot of room sound.. It's a tricky one.. Not ideal.
Most of you are missing the point of the video. These techniques can be used with much cheaper mics!! 57's make fantastic room mics and are cheap. A CAD m179 makes a killer overhead for 150$ For fuck sakes think outside the gear and try these techniques, they WORK!
@SnowboardA51 yeah it sucks for the rest of us who dont have $10,000 sitting around to get good drum recordings... Plus if you're going to put that much into recording, you'd better know what you're doing.
"Today we're going to show you a tutorial on how to use equipment that's more expensive than you house, to record drums. First off, you'll probably never going to see or have all this equipment unless you're at a studio, or unless you make $120,000 a year. So ..." then goes the 9 minutes of explaining.
how to record drums if i had a shitload of awesome mics... if I had all of these mics I would've prbly already went to school for sound engineering and wouldn't need this video... i want a video for youtube users like me with a bunch of lo-fi mics and no degree in sound design
@beckryanperson. What exactly do you want? This video is somewhat of an ad for Royer but has a heap of helpful tips. Why don't you do a search for "How to record a drum kit with shitty mic 'x' coupled with no understanding or intention to learn what I'm doing" instead to complaining that a video isn't relevant to you.
@mr4y Sennheiser MD421s on toms top, Shure SM7s on toms bottom, i'd say he's mentioning the mojave and royers because its some kind of advertisement for them, but it could also be that the MD421s and SM7s are just that common and recognisable.
Wagener: "Hi. Assisting me is this guy from Royer. His nickname is 'Mr. Redundant' because he pretty much just copies what I say, and regurgitates it using a different phrasing."
Royer guy: "Essentially what I'm here to do is take what Michael says, and put a different spin on it so it looks like I'm contributing, but I'm really not."
You'll need a mixer first off. Then just mess around with placement to find the sweet spot for each mic. Keep your cymbals mics far away (about 4-5 feet above your head). Use the Sure for your snare. Then play around with the EQ on the mixer.
Lot's of muffling RemOs, moongell etc...
I have a crappy CAD mic set and a Sure SM57 and have got some pretty sweet sounding recordings.
I was interested in how to mic and record drums properly, as I normally play guitar and bass myself. I found this quite interesting and it got my noodle thinking about sound patterns, pressure wave patterns. The thing about the polarities due to the mic placement on the floor tom was intriging, I guess you invert one of the signals too.
I guess an already fully mic'd drum kit in the studio is the way to get a proper drum track, and make sure a drummer is at the controls too.
okay so you've started recording, would each mic allow you to control the volume along with delay effects from your CPU. or mixer?
starslight13 5 days ago
so the way each microphone is set up records a more direct audio wave attack for each instrument set.(snare, hi hat, crash, etc.) ..???

Awesome sounding drums but...There is Superior Drummer 2.0 and Metal Foundry SDX so...basically, you really don't need this. Just quality V-Drum.

Glyn Johns Method
Recorder man Method
and Bonham Method
What most do today:
Full mic-up
