The Cure is beyound any voice and sound with this incredible song, only emotion and deep feelings come above with this masterpiece, it could'nt never done better and never be imitated by anyone, Robert and band, more then thanks
melodic poetry. in my pinion this song is one of roberts best work. and the way the band put the music togheter is just perfct harmony brngs me memories of days gone by. reminds me hw lng I've cried 4 her, up to this day i wake up at the sound of dawn just to go with her. I wonder if they ever made a video for this song, nt that it needs one but just a thougth
This song just takes me to another place! It's the music itself that simply puts me in a trance every time I hear it!! Just listen and u will see if u are a true music connoisseur.
What must have Robert gone through the day he wrote this song? If he can write lyrics like this just out of the blue then he is truly a genius.
All my life I have dreamed of writing one song. A song I could play in front of an audience. In front of my friends. My family. And make them cry and make me cry.
I have no idea how or why I have had this dream but I have had it since I was a child.
If only it could have been this song. My life would be complete.
When Robert says "put your hands in the sky" at 2:29 and then shortly thereafter the guitar riff changes at 2:46 . That little ~30 second segment of music is possibly the most beautiful, most emotional, sad, heart wrenching , everything moment ever composed in any genre of music. I used to listen to that segment of the song over and over and over.
It's not my favorite but this song could possibly be the greatest song the Cure has ever written.
What a song to listen to when you break up with your girlfriend then find someone else but you still are heart broken from your previous girl. And I was at the ocean with the new girl but I felt so sad and tried to hide it.
"...slips her dress like a flag to the floor, hands to the sky - surrenders it all." Brilliant! Love the cure, and this song still chokes me up everytime I hear it. I've never been so colorfully see-through-head before.
and their record label said the were not going to release this album or Disintegration becuase they were shit. This song by itself could be on a cd, tracks 1-12 and it would STILL be great, even better than most music today.
What a powerful song, absolutely awesome! i like the whole wish-record, it's a perfect mixture of the old new-wave-scene and rock. genius! the cure - simply a legend.
I have always absolutely loved this song!! The music in this song is just filled with so many emotions. You cant put your finger on just one but you can feel them all!! The Cure is just truly an awesome and amazing band who have so stood the test of time!! I have loved them for 27 years now and I know it will continue on through my lifetime! Robert is a poetic genius hands down and he is absolutely amazing in all aspects! I love it all! The Cure forever!!
Many, many thanks for posting this song;another part of The Cure's great and amazing treasures of music! I love to see how many people appreciate them, keep on,please!
This song is freakin' amazing ! Robert Smith's song writing is brilliant beyond compare. He is a true artist in every sense of the word. Words cannot convey how much I love this song. The only person that even comes close in talent is Morrissey IMO.
@rockabellaaah lol me too well i think since i was born basically my dad lisented to them and i'm not that old and when i was like 5 my aunt was doing my makeup and my bro wanted some and she was like boys dont where make up and i said robert smith wheres make up and she was like who the hell is robert smith and i was all like the cure duh!
The Cure has quite a few amazing-yet-little-known tracks throughout their discography.
Even many so called "lifelong fans" only know the popular cuts that were on the radio, and are unaware of the may "hidden gems" they have recorded over the last 30 years.
Wish is the only Cure album I've listened to, beginning to end with b-sides included, in one sitting, more times than I can even remember. Simply beautiful and amazing.
When they played this live, it was maybe 3 notes into it and I started bawling. I love this band and this song so, so much. Lots of special thoughts and memories and even more to come i'm sure. This is one of the main songs I find I want to describe to people when I talk about The Cure. So much beautiful emotion.
Yep i saw them in Brisbane Australia in 1992, poetry in motion. Then myself and 6 mates travelled 1200kms to see them on their bloodflowers tour two nights running. (its a big country) twas worth it.
this one is very special. i remember...1994..my brother died in '91...he used to listen to the cure. i gave it a try (as a 14 year old boy back then)....and this album belongs to the soundtrack of my life. so much emotion...so much tragedy...love the cure forever.
wow....i agree. ridiculous song. the songwriting is first-class. and i hope you listen to this band for the rest of your life. may your brother r.i.p.
@LadyCureNob89 Cure's music has been the sound track of my life, I know exactly what you mean. This album for example was the sound track for my divorce. This concert was the last time me and my ex went out together. She wasn't a Cure fan thou.
this song is about having an addiction to someone who is not right for you. And you know it, but just can't stop, because they do something for you in the moment. When you know you need to stop, because they break your heart over and over and over, but you can't. Because this person is like a drug.
i always thought it was a ghost story about two lovers. that.. someone who was tired and wanted the ghost to leave already.. but then the ghost doesn't let him go.
or the ghost was tired of the guy holding on... and wanted to leave already.. i don't know, just my misinterpretation of the song..
and also could be that you're with someone, but you're in love with sb's else, at the same time u don't want to break the person who's with you's heart....
@kameno23 Absolutely. It's about true love that is not reciprocated. It doesn't stop, it just hides inside, blocking anyone else who tries to get close. It's not a bad feeling really, unless you push it and share it with them and they knock you back.....then it just grows again. No regrets for ever feeling this way...it's about having soul hey? :)
In what way is Wish underrated, not only is it their best selling album so far as i now and in my book it is one of their best albums along with Pornography and Bloodflowers and a lot of long term cure fans agree.
Interesting you rate Bloodflowers and Wish higher than Disintegration. I guess when a band can produce so many quality albums over so many years there is always going to be differing views.
Hi ashgem, Disintegration IS my number one cure album, as soon as i saw my comment i wondered what i was doing omitting it. A slip of the tongue maybe, my first three in order would be Disintegration, Wish and Pornography. How about you? Been a fan since before Pornography.
Definitely a tough gig trying to rank them but Disintegration is my number 1 and then in no particular order and purely depending on the mood I'm in it would be Pornography, The head on the door, Wish and Faith. Unfortunately I was only 8 when Pornography was released but have been a massive fan since high school and love seeing them live!
Most underated of all the cure albums, and yet the one I always go back to. Beautiful guitars, and bob smith on top crying with them. Always reminds me of Cork for some reason, the edge of the deep green sea (The river lee).
One of the most amazingly emotional songs of their career. There is such a palpable feeling of longing and despair. Really explores the boundaries of love. And the way that the lyrics are written from both of the lovers perspectives is so powerful. What a heartbreaking song.
@MrTKgames: I know, I know... but it's such a shame... emo was started by such great bands: Sunny Day Real Estate, Smashing Pumpkins, Cure... and it turned into utter shit
@metrocide Don't get carried away by tags which media are trying to label bands with. It depends on the definition: for some, emo is what Wikipedia defines it to be, for others (like me), it's just emotional music, played by some great bands, like I said before: Sunny Day Real Estate, Smashing Pumpkins... I only said I wish music like that was made nowadays.
why do you cry, what did i say, but it's just rain i say, brushing my tears away... what an truly amazing, sad song. i'm sure everyone can relate to this in some way or other.
Such emotional complexity in such simplicity. Robert Smith know damn well how to convey such deep raw and true emotion with such simple yet deep lyrics.
Nobody comes close." never never never let me go she says"-such a simple lyric but the desperation is shown so easily, you can just feel the pain, and he doesn't even try. What a beautiful man. completely original.
My Top 10. 1. Forest 2. From the edge of the deep green sea 3. Hundred years 4. Faith 5. Strange day 6. The same deep water as you 7. Other voices 8. Pornography 9. All cats are grey 10. Disintegration that was a lot harder to choose than i thought.. I went the early cure route mostly but all the cure songs are great tbh.
My top 11 :) 1.The Cure-Seventeen Seconds 2.The Cure-Disintegration 3.The Cure-From the Edge Of the Deep Green Sea 4.The Cure-Burn 5.The Cranberries-Never grow old 6.The Cure-A Forest 7.The Cure-Charlotte Sometimes 8.The Cure-Pornography 9.The Cure-Siamese Twins 10.the Cranberries-Twenty One 11.The Cranberries-No Need To Argue
My Top 10 !!! (Not only Cure) 1. The Cure - From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea 2. The Cure - Cut 3. U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday 4. The Cure - Strange Day 5. U2 - Pride (In the Name of Love) 6. The Cure - Disintegration 7. David Bowie - This is not America 8. Tears For Fears - Everybody wants to rule the World 9. Yes - Owner of a lonley Heart 10. The Cure - End
I wish I could just stop, I know another moment will break my heart, too many tears, too many times, too many years I've cried.... over you... over you!
This guitar solo at 5.37 is awesome !

Heard it all, have it all (well, almost).
This is arguably one of Robert Smith's best efforts.
Only he can write seemingly upbeat music that actually matches the pure melancholy of the words.
"Why do you cry? What did I say? But it's just rain, I smile... brushing my tears away."
Genius.

...as for the feeling..i don't know wether is bad or good.
I've been there, done that and now I'm just...you know.. numb?
My love for this person was pure and strong. It still is. In a different way.It still hurts thought....
You know, I believe that there isnt such thing as "forever" when it comes to feelings. (those kind of feelings)
You can ALWAYS "feel" about someone, but the "feeling" won't be the same. It get stronger, it changes to bad, or good. It depends...

@Alwaystheshyones ..I dont know if you understand the meaning of what I'm trying to say here.. (this is not my mother lanquage:P )

What can you do? you just wait till someone is "strong" enought to heal you... or wait till you gain the power to heal yourself :)
