If I were a music record producer I'd sign her to play the Brahms Double concerto with Hilary Hahn in a heart beat. Uncommon ease of expression from this lady.
Im a freshman in high school in the varsity orchestra at my school. and we are playing this song for our next concert. Its such a pretty song and our solo cellist is a senior and he is just amazing! I can even say he is better than this lady. She is really good also.
She does a good job on the cello. I would never compare DuPre to her because they're both good and have different ways of playing this song that give both players great music style personality. I do love DuPre's emotional verson and Sol Gabetta's verson equally. This my first time listening to Sol Gabetta. Ya!
Is it just me or is the way she positions her left hand akward.... her fingers always look bent and gnarled. Ive been playing cello for 15 years now and have never seen that.
@strad1712 Yeah I noticed that too. It sort of looks like she's double jointed. I play the violin and I'm double jointed and sometimes when I use the fat part of my fingers to create thick vibrato it looks a bit strange.
@Hybridstigmatist Do you know what I am pointing out? Ive been playing cello since I was seven and have been classically trained by international cellist's. I understand you need to adjust your fingers depending on what type of technique you want to produce a certain sound. And that your fingers should be curved and a should be pointing somewhat down and away from you. But her joints in her fingers themselves are bent akwardly.
I think she actually plays a bit better then du pre, because sometimes i think Jaquline plays with a bit too much intensity (Only sometimes) , Sol plays perfect with a great passion =D
@Drkrilla You can never play with too much emotion!!!!!! :P Du Pre played it a tad faster and I think it gave the music a bit more character... just my thoughts
She doesn't use vibrato for the opening chords to really establish the key of the piece. I played the piece myself and it actually sounds a lot better without vibrato at the beginning because you've got somewhere to go and didn't use up all expression.
I find her interpretation very similar to Jaqueline du Pre's! Or is it just me?
@MsGlor keep looking her up! She's one of the best in the world, and sadly she's not known as much. I have few recordings of her on my youtube account, and I will keep posting more later. I absolutely love her!
If you get the chance, go an listen to her and see her playing. Not only that her playing is somewhere close to perfect, she is such a nice person as well :-).
Oh yeah, and if you already have one of her CDs, bring it so she can sign it or buy one there :-D.
The Elgar Cello Concerto as done by Jaqueline du Pre is considered the Gold Standard for Cellists. Her interpetation is required learning for all serious cellists.
What a treat! I love female soloists. Their passion is so powerfully visible, yet held in such restraint! This is the first I've heard of Sol Gabetta, but she has a new fan.
She has an interesting left hand, she tends to bend her fingers a lot. Anyway, she has flawless vibrato and intonation so I guess whatever works for her.
What I can say: "Sol Gabetta, I'm not only your fan, but your performances inspire me to continue fighting in life, getting strength on daily work. I hate comparisons with other interpreter of this Concerto but yours is EXCEPTIONAL !!,... on (1)technique, (2)deep sensibility and (3)intelectually complete. These are the three ingredients which Vladimir Horowitz said a perfect interpretation on a musical work needs to have. Congratularions and God Bless You ! Everardo.
