@kamilinlondon The IL-62M is very safe. Poland operated 23, 13 of which it owned and 10 leased from Tarom and Aeroflot. In the first, the engine was known to be faulty and had caused probs when fitted to other IL-62s, and in the second, they didn't land the plane in spite of the flight engineer's advice. LOT planes had auxilliary fuel tanks fitted near the engines and one of these probably ignited. LOT also lost 2 of 3 Vickers Viscounts and they didn't get turbine checking equipment until 1987.
those who comment that this plane is crap...do you think a 30 year old 737, 767, 757 of any U.S. or international airline is going to be better? the IL-62 has a great service record and she will be missed. i would feel a lot safer on any aircraft with 4 crew in the deck like this...but those were the old days...now we have computers taking over the flight engineer....i dont know if I trust those more...
Sadly, Cubana retired its last two IL-62s last month (Mar 1) at a ceremonial flight at Jose Marti. The journal 'Granma' ran a lead article on Mar 11 titled 'Tribute to a Titan' (reference to it being the world's largest passenger plane when it first flew). The first one CU T1208 was delivered to Cubana in 1977 and 28 were operated in all. The article praised the plane's elegance and reliability and noted various world leaders & dignitaries (including Pope John Paul) who had flown in them.

@sommif Apparently in the '70s and '80s the 'extra' flight engineer was supposed to oversee all airport ground crew activity on all Aeroflot Il-62s flying to the US (and it might have been the same with Cubana 62s). This was after the downing of Cubana flight 455 in 1976, a DC-8 that had C4 explosives smuggled on board by two agents employed by CIA operative Luis Carriles who now lives in the US (and was never charged). All 73 on board died including the Cuban national fencing team.

@matatan69 A German registered DC-3 carrying passengers who paid to see Berlin city in this 1943 USA built aircraft also crashed last month. I am a Slav engineer and YES we are resourceful. Nothing is wasted..not even a bolt unless it is broken.
@matatan69 The LOT accidents were due to lack of maintenance (they had no equipment for removing & testing turbines) - it had nothing whatsoever to do with the design of the plane which is sturdy. Thirty countries operated Il-62s and they have the best safety record of their era and class. In 43 years there were 9 crashes (two of which were due to engine failure with LOT), 2 landing overruns and an aborted takeoff. Compare that with Boeing and DC of the time.
@matatan69 That is not in the least the same as the LOT accidents. This happened at 25000 ft and the controls were not affected. Plane made a safe landing and would have been repaired had it not been so old with history of high flight time. There have been uncontained engine failures in almost every type of aircraft from this era, some fatal some not.

Gander Center. He was just doing a "Radio Check" to show the passenger the radio, but the timing coincided with switching from VHF radio to HF radio anyway, to cross the Atlantic. The HF test is that multiple tone you hear.

@TalksWithDirt that is cause the plane is old and has not almost any electronic device (like electonic displays), so there are trims, buttons and analogic devices everywhere, and two more people (engineers) apart from pilots are needed to watch and look after all those things, and they obviously need more space ;)

@matatan69 A German registered DC-3 carrying passengers who paid to see Berlin city in this 1943 USA built aircraft also crashed last month. I am a Slav engineer and YES we are resourceful. Nothing is wasted..not even a bolt unless it is broken.

@matatan69 The LOT accidents were due to lack of maintenance (they had no equipment for removing & testing turbines) - it had nothing whatsoever to do with the design of the plane which is sturdy. Thirty countries operated Il-62s and they have the best safety record of their era and class. In 43 years there were 9 crashes (two of which were due to engine failure with LOT), 2 landing overruns and an aborted takeoff. Compare that with Boeing and DC of the time.

@matatan69 check out the MD-11. That is a dangerous machine by its design. The IL-62 failed because of maintenance errors. The design is good.

@matatan69 That is not in the least the same as the LOT accidents. This happened at 25000 ft and the controls were not affected. Plane made a safe landing and would have been repaired had it not been so old with history of high flight time. There have been uncontained engine failures in almost every type of aircraft from this era, some fatal some not.

Me parece una tripulacion encantadora, como todos los cubanos , pero veo que tienen (Sobretodo el Capitan) un serio problema con el ingles. Creo que estos paises en el que el que los tecnocratas sobrevovien , dan como resultado profesionales no demasiado cualificados. Juzgen por ustedes mismos, no voy a decir cual de ellos me parece que esta en otra pelicula y no se entera nada de nada.

When Raoul Castro dies? ;-P Because of the embargo policy of the US they are not able to buy airbus or boeing aircrafts, not even used planes. it´s prohibited for any country with (business)relations to the US to deal with cuba in things of boeing planes parts etc. nearly the same airbus. So they will keep on going their IL62M´s for several years. maybe they buy some sukhoi superjets i heared somewere. if they do, Air Koryo will buy the cubana IL62M´s, they are the real specialists in IL62

Gander Center. He was just doing a "Radio Check" to show the passenger the radio, but the timing coincided with switching from VHF radio to HF radio anyway, to cross the Atlantic. The HF test is that multiple tone you hear.

cualquier aeroilinea permite que uno pase con una camara al cockpit del avion, es comun nada fuera de lo normal, la unica diferencia es que algunas tripulaciones se prestan para esto y otras no

En Sudamérica y en muy pocas partes de Europa existen personas que han tenido el atrevimiento de estar en una cabina grabando con cámaras. Cubana no es la única y pienso con el mayor de los respetos hacia su persona que cada aerolínea sea de donde sea merece aprecio, además los viejos equipos IL-62 no dudo que pronto los reemplacen, recuerde que cubana tiene los IL.96.300

La verdad q pilotear aviones de la ex-union sovietica es muy entretenido, a mi me divierten mas ver videos de aterrizajes de tupolev e ilyushin que ver los boeing y los airbus, es como mas entretenido por el hecho de que oprimen muchisimos botones, y la verdad q es cosa mia, pero el ruidito de los botones de las cabinas que hace "tack" me gustan, jaja, igual que los dc10, son aviones q requieren minimo 3 pilotos a bordo para pilotearlos.. de todas formas me gustaria pilotear el 737

Si los nueos aviones estos, donde el piloto ya no tiene valor a bordo y se confia todo en la electronica y instrumentos no capacitados para pilotar manualmente.
Creo que los aviones "antiguos" son mas seguros porque se ha comprobado su calidad.

En el instituto de ingenieros de la aviacion civil de Kiev, Ucrania, se graduaban en carreras de 5 años los ingenieros aeronauticos mecánicos, eléctricos, radiocomunicación, economistas, sistemas automatizados, combustibles y lubricantes, y en Construcción de Aeródromos. Idem en un Instituto de Aviacion similar en Riga, Estonia. En la Academia de Aviacion Civil de Leningrado estudiaban 5 años los cuadros de mando, asi como Control de Transito Aereo.

Pikiri75: Conozco Cubana de Aviacion, pues trabajé allí varios años, y no todos los pilotos fueron pilotos militares como aseguras, ni los navegantes son hijos de personalidades. Existen casos, pero no es lo comun. Hay muchos pilotos, navegantes, ingenieros de vuelo y demas tripulantes que llegaron alli por méritos propios. Honor a la verdad.

Yo puedo explicarte eso , porque soy Cubano y Piloto pero no de CUBANA ; yo fuy Piloto en Cuba pero militar , todos los pilotos de linea en CUBA fuero antiguos pilotos de la fuerza aerea de Cuba ; y por los navigantes es otra cosa o bien eres familia de una personalidad en Cuba o bien de un gran militar ; asi como asi en cuba no es posible trabajar en esa reama ; si has viajado por cubana alguna vez veras que son bastante majores la azafatas (os ) alguna ecepcion habra pero en jeneral es asi

Los pilotos de Cubana estudiaban en la escuela de pilotos de Kirovogrado, Ucrania, en la URSS, un centro para la formación de pilotos de alto nivel. Allí se graduaban pilotos y navegantes de vuelo en 4 años.
