not to take away from this video, but for the new builders of banjos, i used a hand drum, no streching skins, thay come in 8, 10, and 12 inch, just make sure the skin is tite on the hand drum before installing your srings, but not to tite cause it will distort the mounting ring, and make sure the neck is abouta 1/4 inch above the head, so as the strings are close to the head, i had to cut down a bridge to make the string 1/8 inch off the fret board, hope this helps, i also build canjo's, David
I've got a question on skin heads, What is the easiest way you've found of tensioning them while you tack them on? I've been trying to build a banjo for some time, but the head has been giving me the most trouble, I finally just decided on the tackhead, over the tension style.
Other than that, I've gotta say that is a very magnificent banjo, I love the sound. <3
I learned to tack on a skin from David Hyatt's gourd banjo web site. Google "david hyatt craftsmanship" and to the left you'll see link "Installing a Skin Head."
That sounds great. I too have just completed making a salad bowl banjo, my bowl is a bamboo salad from Habitat. Also sounds like a gourd. I'ts my first attempt, so a bit trial and error.
i'm just in the process of making a cigar box guitar, so all vids like this are of interest to me. but i must admit that this is probably the most professionally made video i've seen on youtube. Isaac was excellent... I hope more of this becomes popular over here in the UK
Sooo nice and it really convinced me that frets are an option, not a necessary feature. The slides sound so much better. Thank you for posting this! John
A beautiful banjo! Sounds great! I started making a gourd banjo, but it cracked after 2 hours of cleaning the inside. I will not give up though. Maybe I'll hunt down a bowl also. Thanks for the inspiration...
the main reason i love people like you is that you're so awesome.

Wow that is lovely. Why dont you try adding frets as a guideline only for your sliding?

yep. frets can be nice, but old-time banjo is awesome fretless.
jdelfield 3 years ago
Ya, I love Bluegrass banjo, no doubt but the simplicity and the plunkiness of the fretless mountain banjos, makes me happy!
