God, it is dreadful though, I would never have liked this movie had this been the ending. As it is, it is one of my favorites that I must have seen 20 times or more. Sometimes it just does not work out and you have to move on … in fact more often than not, so this movie was really fantastic in its truthfulness … one of my alltime favorites
Thanks so much for posting this. I too prefer the original ending, who wouldn't that read the book? I too only had a copy of the re-edit so have not seen this in over 20 years. WOW!
Thanks for posting this! I saw this on Showtime back in the early 80's. I then saw it in a small theater in Boston in 1988 and it had a different ending. I coundn't believe it I was so disappointed. About 5 years ago I read up on the alternate ending that came later. Honestly thought I would never see this again. She came back.
I used to read Ann Beattie's "Chilly Scenes of Winter" every year around the holidays. Great book.
Wow what a cinematic epiphany! I love this movie and on this cold and rainy day here in L.A. I watched it again. I had read about a lost ending so it's great to finally see it. Thanks
Actually, this is the original ending. Released 1979, I saw this ending of "Head over Heels" on cable in 1980. A rereleased version called "Chilly Scenes of Winter", was released in 1982, and cut this ending out. Chilly.. was the title of the Ann Beattie novel that the movie is based on. In one sense the original ending (this one) is truer to the novel, though the novel was more ambiguous.
I understand both positions, but still like this ending better. Thanks for posting. "You kept the key

thanks you so much for this. it's truly one of the rarest and most precious videos on all of youtube. I've loved this film for years and wasn't sure if I'd ever see this alternate ending. again thanks.
One can only find this wonderful film on VHS occasionally on EBAY. I have a good copy of it with the more realistic ending, where it is left ambiguously what happens but one is led to believe it is highly likely they did not get back together. This ending seems so corny and even cheesy, something the rest of this unique, great film by Joan Micklin Silver avoided at all costs. This ending seems like a standard Hollywood romantic comedy ending~nothing special and so out of place in the film.
@PeaceNYC2011 sorry you felt it out of place- I guess whatever you see first makes the impression-- When I watch the abbreviated version I feel cheated - He leaves her apartment , goes to a park and and it fades to black --If the obsession he had led him to a singular cathartic moment in a park then we are all doomed ! But I'm a hopeless romantic -Hopeless must be the word that rankles you in this instance! Thanks for watching though--- I love NYC
Where did you find this, I have been looking for the original movie for years? I was very disappointed with the rereleased cut version. This ending makes sense, it is consistent with the story line and is true to the book. Good job, thank you.
Thank you for posting this … I had never seen it.

In the original ending they DON'T get back together. He's seen running, and accepting the fact that it is over.

@lpvcrcd you know the story on why they changed it right? If I had been in that test audience I would have shouted them all down!
