The reason you can tell is from the turn signal lights in the front. 1972 has just one on each side. 1971 has two on each side, one on top of eachother :) and yes, it is true that it does have the 72 bumper. BUT Chevrolet changed a couple of things about the car to keep the production up and get people to want to buy that car.
