  • it's from the Michael Keyser movie "The Speed Merchants". One of the best movies ever

  • what is this from? a movie or a video or something?

  • wow this is super rare

  • R.I.P. Jo Bonnier.

I like the way his friend told of the story.

  • Jo's car was in the woods you see on camera not behind the camera( witch is inside the corner)

The Ferrari driver simply ran for his life....

  • ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEY! WAIT A MOMENT I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND A F...! WHAT HAPPEND WITH JO???

  • @92manu42 his car collided with the ferrari yo usee burning and went spinning in the woods

  • Vic Elford was one of the bravest and best drivers of this era!!

    Stay healthy "Quick Vick"!!!

  • From the movie "The Speed Merchants" by michael keyser about the '72 sports car season. THE BEST racing movie ever.

  • Things were less racing and more gore back then. Tragic, really.

  • He held the speech on Jochen Rindts Funeral

  • the good thing, the other racer didnt continues the race,he stopped, and help him. i think HE'S racr. not the other ones.

  • Poor Jo, best Swedish driver until Peterson.

  • Why the f**k would you have trees right next to a race course?

  • @tryithere It aint an actual race course. It was built on roads.

  • vic elford is a hero

  • From what Vic says, it sounds like Jo tried to go up the inside of Florian Vetsch (the Ferrari driver) and Vetsch never knew he was there. Most prototypes were still very unstable back then, and Jo's car probably got air underneath and lifted over the guardrail. It's a miracle this doesn't happen more often, as those corners are extremely high speed and the road is pretty narrow. R.I.P. Jo Bonnier.

  • Bonnier was in the woods behind the camera. The driver who we saw jump the guard rail was in the burning car who bonnier collided with. He was going to check on Bonnier.

  • where was bonnier?

  • How can footage on YouTube with over half a million hits be described as rare?

  • @DaiJonesful maybe the crash is rare and race car crashes that are fatal usually get a lot of hits because people might wanna pay their respects to the driver or drivers killed in the crash plus this was posted in 2007

  • @DaiJonesful It can still be rare footage you dumbass.

  • @LogainUlver How? Please give a brief description of how footage with half a million views is called rare? And by the way, your offensive and aggressive approach says so much more about your personality and character than anything you actually commented on. I just thought you may like to know that for next time. So, how can this be seen as rare? I am interested in how you can conclude that.

  • @DaiJonesful Whatever... At least I know what 'rare' means. 'Rare' is defined in how easily something is to get your hands on. And that has nothing to do with how many views it got on YouTube.

  • @LogainUlver Don't really want to squabble here. We agree on the definition (sort of), and yes, half a million people have found it easily on YouTube. But anyways, whatever, it was sad he died. It is amazing that more don't die in Le Mans, including the Mulsanne straight. It seems to never stop, at max speed. I went once, but for the bike festival. Don't ride myself, but my girl did. Bonnier was a very good driver, but then that just shows how much of an old fart I am.

  • @DaiJonesful are you fucking serious?

  • @jibberjabberr Uh, yeah, I think so. What's upset you?

  • RIP

  • matforsbon det gör det. Själv heter jag också Joakim, och det är efter den här mannen. Villa i frid Jocke Bonnier..

  • what film is this clip taken from? ive never seen this before.

  • seroiusly....i would really like to know!

  • It's from The Speed Merchants - the documentary of the 1972 World Sportcar Championship.

  • woah..ok.i have that in a box of vhs vids in the attic here... i must get it out...thats the one with mario andretti on the cover yeah? i think its still in the cellophane wrapper! note to self "take a week off and catch up on unwatched duke videos"

    thanks by the way!

  • He made a mistake?

  • it doesn't say it is formula 1. it just says f1 driver.

  • It´s the 24h of Le Mans

  • ops wrong from me , this wasnt mulsanne it was a bit after

  • it dont say......

  • this was at Mulsanne straight on Le mans track

  • THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!!!!!! wow somebady who can just anser a question....

  • Its Le Mans

  • isn't this in the film 'le mans'?

  • Vic Elford was a hero, to get out of his car and try and get the driver out (even though the driver was vacated).

  • Yes Quick Vic was great!! Very brave, very sympathic, good looking and one of the best allrounders all time!!! Stay healthy Vic!!!

  • @geeflyboy I actually was taught by Vic Elford at Skip Barber in Sebring. Nice guy, though he said I was way too damn aggressive with my entries into the corners lol.

  • Just because youre blind doesn't mean it's pointless. Its better to die doing what you love, than what people like you think is morally correct. Racing does a lot good too. Take formula one; it is one big commercial for the sponsors, because the race drivers attract viewers, the sponsors earn money selling products and entertains the viewers. We can't everybody help other people all the time, and suddenly youre unlucky to die when you don't save other people, and then you're just a shitface

  • man just shut up and stop watching f1 then

  • He's name was Joakim "Jocke" Bonnier. Ditt minne lever evigt.

  • Vic Elford is a nice guy! He stopped and risked his life to save the other guy... even though he was already out.

    R.I.P. Jo Bonnier

  • all of them!

Even Dale Earnhardt and Adam Petty

  • and Erica too?

  • Jo Bonnier in 1972. Then, Jo Gartner in 1986.

  • i would buy it

  • i wanna have it

  • whoever laughs is a fuckhole!!! this is rare footage, but hell, who cares, R.I.P Jo Bonnier

  • why is everyone so confused by this vid? This crash involved Jo Bonnier thats why his name is at the top of this page.

He collided with Florian Vetsch at the end of the Mulsanne straight and his car was launched into the tree's where he died instantly.

Vetsch's car was left burning on the side of the track.

Vic Elford is the man talking on this clip and also the driver who we see getting out of his car to check the burning car of Vetsch.

Jo Siffert was killed at Brands Hatch in 1971.

  • No, Siffert died a brands in a 1 off race, this IS Jo Bonnier

  • i don't understand what happened (i'm from earth o.o')

    ......

    reading rik1pk's comment

    oh now i understood :)

  • VERY RUDE.

  • i find your anti-martian comments distastful and personally offensive.

  • is that the car that went into the air and crashed in the trees?

  • yes

  • Listen again, fool. Jo's car went airborne and into the woods, where he died. Vic thought the Ferrari driver was trapped in the burning car by the side of the road and that was why he went over to open the doors of the Ferrari. If you had even watched the video at all, you'd have realised that the fella climbing over the barricade was the Ferrari driver, which explains why Vic couldn't find him in the burning car.

  • I was replying to FrostPike by the way.

Don't know why it was posted as an individual comment.

  • For brazilians: o cara tá contando que quando foi resgatar o acidentado, e abriu a porta do carro, ficou surpreso qeu não tinha ninguém dentro. O piloto tava além da proteção, tinha voado pra fora do carro. Morreu.

  • the car spins on the air and fly to the trees. the driver of the ferrari got out off the burning car and went to help the driver of the flying car. the other driver stoped his car and tryed to save the driver of the burning ferrari.

  • i don't understand what happened (i'm french)

  • i dont get it was jo the one walking then he sat they said nobody was in the car? reply me plz

  • How about you read the description and listen to the video

  • he fell out of the car it wasn't too hard to answer metaldelph was it?

  • @NASCARWWEclubpenguin nope, it was Elford -the narrator-

  • Hey, in what corner he crashed?

  • Not sure the name, it's the one leading up to Indianapolis corner. The same corner Dumbreck took off at in 1999

  • @Setaz1 It was at the second right -hand dogleg leading up to "the kink" and "Indianapolis".

  • Comment removed

  • @Setaz1 The accident took place just after the 2nd dog-leg leading up to the right-hand "kink" and the left-hand main corner at Indianapolis.

  • @thevmanvj: I don't know if we are saying the same thing, but the crash happened on the straightaway after the hairpin that followed that HUGE straightaway with the 2 S'es.

    I may be wrong though...

  • @PhilipTheBigOne The footage shot facing back from the car begins going over the crest on Mulsanne Straight. Just over the crest is where they gear down and brake (about 500 yds out) for Mulsanne Corner. It was actually about a 55 degree corner. Next is the high-speed run-up thru the two right hand doglegs then, Indianapolis...which is actually 2 turns...an easy right hander, gearing down, then braking hard for the sharp main left corner. Crash occured going through the 2nd high-speed dogleg.

  • @thevmanvj: I feel like you're right, but I'm TERRIBLE with corner names!!! Thanks however...

  • @PhilipTheBigOne No worries. But here's some nice clips with narrated laps around Le Mans posted here. I recommend the "1969 Le Mans Onboard for the ""Maison Blanche" (White House) era, and the 2010 Astor Martin Onboard clip for the Modern era which includes the Porsche Curves, the adding of 2 chicanes on Mulsanne Straight and the turns added between the Pit Straight, the old Dunlop Curve and the Original "Esses". My favorite is the one from 1969 narrated by Sterling Moss.

  • @PhilipTheBigOne Afterthought....

1972 was the first year that they used the newly added "Porsche Curves" and bypassing "Maison Blanche" (White House). If you think about it, the only part of the circuit that remains unchanged is the run between Mulsanne Corner (which has been re-profiled) through Indianapolis, Arnage, and fast rolling curves leading up the Porsche Curves turnoff, which leads the course away from "Maison Blanche"

  • Another sad demise of a Swedish, world class driver. R.i.p. Joakim and Ronnie.

  • A sad day indeed. But Quick Vic is with us and we can be thankful.

  • Exactly!!! And he is still on the run at Oldtimer- Races!!! He is my alltime-favourite!!

  • Yes, Vic Elford for his corage act get a Royal medal from the Queen, but unfortunatly he cannot save Bonnier´s life.

    Sorry for my English.

    Bonnier R.I.P

  • who is talking in this vid?

  • Vic Elford

  • Not quite entirely true, no drivers have died in F1 since Senna. The same can not be said about track workers and marshalls.

  • and why is that?

heb je een probleem met nederlanders ofzo? ga ff normaal doen met je grafhoofd man, gore fuckaap.

  • oh im going to commit suicide now =P

no serious, that wasn't really funny..

  • i said die fucking worm

  • fuck you, you must be german. asshole. how would you like me to come and break your neck right now? you try to be funny or something? well you're not. die, please

  • Back in the day, how race car drivers bravely stepped in to those cars still amazes me. There was no Hans device, no proper fire protection suit, no high tech composites to absorb a crash, no fancy power steering...

We shall truly worship those mavericks who placed their lives on the line, some to return victorious: some to be remembered, all to make the sport of racing safer today.

  • you're right, no doubts about it, but in next 36 years time protection gear will be three times as effective as it's today and people will be saying exactly the same.

  • nobody died in f1 since this last 15 years what more can you expect?but american competition safety is shit...lots of dead in indy, cart, nascar...

  • True F1 is really safe look at the big crash of kubica the only think he has was a brussed leg.. that is nothing if you look at how he hit the wall

  • F1 is definately a leap safer these days, but you can never rule out a serious accident.

  • a this is le-mans not F1

  • Ah yeah I know. Sorry about that. I was just replying to an F1 related comment on here.

  • why cant you spell?

  • It's rude to make fun of retarded people.

  • Mavericks - indeed! They were hero's - genuine heros - I can't believe society worships pissant football players while REAL men did this for a living!

  • @Brainman94 rigth its awful when people die, but theyre not heroes in anyway

they get paid a large amount of money to do something that is inherently very dangerous...live by the sword, die by the sword..simple as

  • he broke his neck instantly

  • Sid Collins IMS Radio Network eulogy for Eddie Sachs, after Sachs/MacDonald fatalities in the 1964 Indianapolis 500, is the answer to whether it's worth it.

  • Is it worth it? Well, it is certainly human nature to push the boundaries, compete and get the adrenaline pumping. Anything dangerous, like shuttle missions for example, is also things that make living an exciting thing for some.

  • is it worth it ????

  • the headline reads Formula 1, but these look more like sportscar(LeMans) type cars...

  • It reads formula one driver implying he was predominently a formula one driver and not a sportscar driver. You are right in saying these are sportscars but the heading doesn't say it's an F1 race. Bonnier was most famous in F1 and raced in sportscars when his F1 career was over.

  • I remember that the swiss driver of the Ferrari Daytona, Florian Vetsch, got out of the burning car with his hands burned, because he prefered to drive without gloves!

  • You know, I have just discovered these videos.

And I'm trying to decide if these guys had balls of steel, or just fucking out of their mind.

Any honest answers here?? I'm leaning on the out of their mind, especially in the F1 racing.

  • There have been only two major disasters in motor sport - a French city-to-city race and a Le Mans. Of the other notable drivers killed, at least one died in a plane crash and several have died in ordinary road accidents. Racing is extremely dangerous, disabling injuries are commonplace, but fatal accidents have always been relatively rare.

  • The French city to city race was the Paris-Madrid race which I just read about in "Cars at Speed". And Le Mans was 1955 where 90 or so spectators were killed.

Today fatalities are rare, but in the 60's and 70's they certainly weren't. The aforementioned book, the author was at Monaco for the 1959 GP (may have been 58) and they had the previous years signage. A full 25% of the drivers from the previous year listed on the signs were dead.

  • tragic

the man in the plane crash was graham hill 2x world champ and he was travelling with new f1 signing and rising star when they crashed

in the 60s and 70s there were many fatalities untill something had to be done and safety is muched improved

  • I believe Von Trips' crash killed 30 or so spectators, which I think is tragic as well.

  • nope.Von Trips killed himself along with 14 spectators at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix

He actually crashed his machine against some stranded drivers and somersaults the somewhat fragile retaining fence with the aforementioned results.

  • The thing of it was, no one knew any better. What they had at the time was the best they could muster. It was just accepted that racing was dangerous because that's the way it always was. Race drivers accepted those risks if they wanted to race.

    Things were just different then.

  • yeah, and the proof to that concepts is to kill a great human being? wow it's great to be you, you are a great example of human being...

  • you are a fucking retard...

  • wow, a bit of tuberage there, don't take that out onto the road now!

  • You can see when Elford looks into the woods, his body language-he already knows.

  • Who is talking

  • It's Vic Elford. He witnessed the crash and was giving his drivers eye account

  • Obviously not! A rather silly question.

  • the commentator also the guy checking out the empty car on fire is a brave guy from my point of view.he was willing to pull a guy out of that enferno he ddnt know the car was empty.

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • car flew into the forest or woods!

  • The Le Mans circuit is a complete joke now with those two chicanes on the straight. It's just so hideous on TV watching the car suddenly disappear to the left, and then re-emerging... shitty circuits are killing motorsport.

  • Yeah Le mans and other tracks are crap. Hockenheim, Osterreichring, Imola, Silverstone have all been severely tainted by conservatives. Circuit designer Herman Tilke stuffs up every circuit he designs or modifies but the FIA (Mosley) keeps promoting his pussy tracks. Viva la Mulsanne! (old) 5.7km of balls and all glory!!

  • I have to disagree with you on the Imola circuit. Without the additions, it may well have continued to add to its reputation of gruesome crashes.

  • True. The problem with Imola is due to a river being on the outer side of Tamburello curve which limits the amount of run off area you can build into that corner. I still believe with circuit safety advances such as impact absorbing walls (from US oval racing) air fences and tyre walls, not to mention improved car safety can still allow corners like Tamburello to exist. when Senna hit that wall, there was no HANS device, no tyre wall, no side raised cockpit no energy absorbing side pods.

  • Le Mans, not Formula 1, retard.

  • You had better not be calling me a retard! Jo Bonnier was a Formula One driver for a long time in the 60's. He set up his own team and entered it in the World Sports car championship.

  • hum I didn't understand the crash... What happened? The guy that was in the broken car went out of it and runned away... and who is dead? The guy trying to rescue the empty car?

  • The car on fire is the ferrari Jo Bonnier tried to overtake. The guy running away is the ferrari driver. The guy doing the comentary is the driver who runs to the empty ferrari. The guy who died ( Jo bonnier ) is in the yellow car which got airborne and span off into the trees behind the policeman

  • a broken neck kill him

  • the footage is from "the speed merchants" film. commentary is from Vic Elford among others like mario Andretti, Helmut Marko. One of the best motorsport documentarys ever made.

  • mexican Pedro Rodriguez died in very similar circumstances...RIP for both Like Roger Williamson also and Elio de Angelis...Where were the marshalls or the fire fighters???

  • That times, you were running without HANS, carbon-fiber compounds, auto-blocking fuel pumps, and nothing like that. You see Ayrton's crash, Ratzenberger's crash, lots of crashes out at Indy, but you never see fire. That systems were implanted around 80's.

Also, at that time, a marshall usually had a little fire extinguiser, but firefighters were only in a frequent crash spot, like Mulsanne, Tertre Rouge and Maison Blanche. That crash looks to be between Mulsanne and Arnage, I believe...

  • Indy Straight.

  • who's that, that just appears at 1:25 in the woods

  • You need to listen to the narration my friend. The narrator (Vic Elford) is describing the fatal crash that happened to Jo Bonnier infront of him.

  • the guy running acrost the road was the car Bonnier was trying to pass (farari sedan). The other guy is the narrator. Bonnier's car is off the road and not on the camera. the guy at the end is carrying PEICES of Bonnier's car.

  • mmmright....if u pay attention u will notice that it wasnt the car leanin to the railing...another car crashed into the woods wish wasn't taped or at least not seen in this tape

  • you are an idiot

  • That was aimed at formulaonefanche... obviously brain dead

  • Vila i frid, Jocke.

  • jo died of wath?? :S

  • I think he would have died of head injuries as the car went into the trees and broke apart.

  • but man I see a the guy geting out of the car

  • The same kind of accident happened to a French driver some years ago (Sebastien Enjolras), somewhere after Arnage ... His car flipped into some trees and was completely destroyed ... As was his body :/

I think the poor Jo, just like the unfortunate Sebastien, was ripped apart into pieces :(

  • Yes, i believe the Enjolras crash was in 1997. I think his bodywork came off and the car took off.

  • Yeah, it's always best to not feed the trolls.

  • Oh my god you can't even read, that is so not my name. Oh and by the way Methuselah i'm going to delete every comment you've made here i've realised you thrive off people responding to you. If you make any more comments i'm just gonna delete them. Have a nice life you freak.

  • perhaps I'm younger then you but I do know how to be respectful and I think it's terrible that there are people who use all there skills to make the internet an worse place. And also I do not hate people cause they are from other countries. I don't know what has happened to you something traumatic I think and now you are like a werewolf always watching for blood...
