I really did not notice it until you mentioned it--but there is a variation in speed and you may be right--it is a nice thought and does enhance the meaning of the film

Did you notice there is about one second of moving pictures in the film? I believe that this moment represents the breakthrough, where the lovers have surmounted the distance between them by their soul's bond. Fittingly, the experimenters are unable to use this magic for their own purposes and send the traveller to the future, where he triumphs by his friendship with future people who give him his heart's desire by sending him back to the past....well, for a moment....

The DVD has the same subtitles and whispering. The visual quality has simply been reduced by the recording process (no-ones fault, and completely normal).

Whining about this is poor behavior. If you must see a pristine version, rent or buy the DVD (available on Netflix and Amazon, respectively).

I have made a new "silent" science fiction short based on the French films, la jetee and rendez-vous by claude lelouche. That film has no actors or dialog, but is exciting to see- La Jetee can b boring- so I combined these 2 films- if it works, we give lelouche a motivation for his...drive- and actors who never move but make a huge presence.  and la jetee has sad and beautiful notions- a little colour, a car race and a a chance to live above ground help us to hope . eh?
