Both AMD's 6 series GPUs and Nvidia's 5 series are great. I have a Gefore GTX 570 2GB in my desktop and I have a AMD 6770M HD 1GB in my laptop currently.
@brodygates when it comes to normal games with dx11, i don't really notice much difference and dx11 makes you drop framrate... i'm gettin a gtx 295 but thats up to you :)

gtx 295 consume 339 and give 40 fps mean 8.74 watt/fps
hd 5870 consume 232 and give 29 fps mean 8 watt/fps
so i'll tell u that the additional wattage is not a waste of electicity but it will give u frames more and as u see the wattage/ frame is almost the same just some lil diffrent so zip it and let ati and nvidia do them work and don't compare them ever

For StarCraft II, ATI doesn't allow you to force AA/AF settings, but Nvidia does.
Nvidia image quality is much better than ATI's and of course price... ATI win's but surely? WHat about stability, shadows, lights and of course Physx... Nvidia win's so both makes got + and - on their side but Ati crashes from time to time - Nvidia almost never unless overheats. ATI almost never overheats but NVidias drivers are better than ATI's and on and on and on....
The 5870 was truly a leap forward in GPU technology. Now I will pretend the GTX 480 never happened and that would make the GTX 580 the next leap forward. Sorry AMD the 6970 was a few week too late. BUT STILL THE 5870 WAS A MASSIVE LEAP IN HORSEPOWER AT ITS TIME. 285 suck's donkey ball because donkey only has one.
The GTX 580 mostly beats the 5970 in extreme tessellation and performance. 2 GTX 580s HUMILIATE 2 5970s in crossfire in extreme tessellation. And I highly doubt Radeon's 6970 will beat the gtx 580 in tesellation and overall performance, since Nvidia is the kind of the new tessellation technology and of course they have the fastest single GPU. RAdeon needs better drivers and better graphics cards for tesellation ;))
If the gtx 295 used ddr5 ram it'd perform much better. Owell the fastest single GPU is the gtx 580 that destroys the 5870 and is better than the 5970. In sli the gtx 580 smokes 2 crossfire 5970. :))

5870 wins cause of Dx11, power usage and the fact its a single gpu, besides there is always the option for crossfire later down the road when it gets older
i would buy the gtx 295 only the BFG watercooled model. i heard that an air-cooled gtx 295 reaches in full load temperatures of 80-82* celsius and 60* in idle .the water-cooled model reaches in full load ~45* celsius .(amazing) .but either way...all gtx 295 ..no matter the producers...consume a lot of power ...compare to the 5870 .gtx 295 consumes at least 100W more power...a luxury i can't afford :)
GTX 295 CO-OP is a power HOG, you need more at least 850Watt PS which is stable to run it at 684 default core clock. Otherwise you gonna have to drop to 576, plus I seen many flickering etc on it. Plus no DX11, so good bye.. I go with 5870 Eyefiniti is a plus.

@Orkulf Get the new Core i7 930 its easier to overclock and is abit faster then 920 its stock 2.8GHZ and has 22X multiplier make sure its C0 Stepping/Revision. I got mine to exactly 4.00GHZ with the Corsair H50 Temps are around 35-40 idle depends if i leave my window open or not
it sure will be nice when the consoles advance a generation and games start getting built to actually take advantage of hardware like this, instead of being built for machines from 2005 and given extra features to compensate for low-res textures and bad normal maps.

You say this like it's a surprise? gtx 480 = single gpu = direct competition for the 5870, NOT the 5970. Majority of benches show that the 480 actually comes close to the 5970 in some cases, and even surpasses it at times (very limited and specific test setup though).
Just wait for their "gtx 495" or whatever they decide to call their dual-gpu card. It'll spank the 5970 in everything, and with good reason: nVidia are releasing SEVEN months after ATi.
@Orkulf Yes, this is totally true. The 295 is a dual card which should beat the 5870. Also the sad part about this entire video is that the 295 didn't blow the 5870 off its feet like many Nvidia fanboys believe.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a total fanboy of ATI or Nvidia, but I lean to ATi as all their latest gen cards are much better if you consider heat, price, wattage usage, price, and in this case (295 vs hd5850) bad performance on the 295 part, in comparison. Did I forget to mention price?
I like ATI aswell but their drivers seem to kill my motherboard. When my 5870 (doesn't matter if I've got only 1 in or using crossifre) gets stuck in 99% activity, its slowely killing my PCI-E slot which gives my massive red line issues.
I think NVidia is a bit better. But worth its money? hell no.. and ATI cards are very good. Like I said: its just the drivers... (sometimes, for some people)
You forgot to mention CUDA for F&H, Physx and the fact that these benchmarks are wrong. In DX10 my 295 co op absolutely destroys my 470 @ 755 in pretty much everything I threw at both. Both were on I7 950 in the same PC.

Anyway, the new GTX480 running hotter than a furnace is the graphics card that competes against and wins against the 5870 which is funny because it'll be the same price as a 5970 and the 5970 absolutely murders that thing.
first off you've no idea how hot the gtx 480 runs, as you don't even own it. Second the 5970 does not go under 800 dollars because retail stores simply dont have'em in stock, the 480 go for 499 and give the same performance or even better in heavy dx11 rendering, 1 nvidia chip against 2 ati's. For almost half the price ;)
idk...ati seems to release cards faster and how the ati 4k series was ment to compete with the nVidia GTX 200 series...it's only logicle that the 5k series are ment to compete with the GTX 300 series wich aren't out yet, but this is only my opinion

Hey, maybe someone asked, and maybe someone responded, but why are you comparing the 5870 with the GTX 295 Co-Op? It purposefully makes the 5870 a worst card in comparison, when the GTX 295 Co-Op was made to compete against a 5900 series card.
Sorry, but considering the 5870 is a single GPU, this video is meant to show what a killer card ATI has made.

That's fine. Now tell me when the Co-op version was made? The GTX 295 Co-op is NOT the same as a GTX 295. And if the GTX 295 co-op was made to compete against the 4870 X2, then it's a little late to the game.

@Orkulf Get the new Core i7 930 its easier to overclock and is abit faster then 920 its stock 2.8GHZ and has 22X multiplier make sure its C0 Stepping/Revision. I got mine to exactly 4.00GHZ with the Corsair H50 Temps are around 35-40 idle depends if i leave my window open or not

it sure will be nice when the consoles advance a generation and games start getting built to actually take advantage of hardware like this, instead of being built for machines from 2005 and given extra features to compensate for low-res textures and bad normal maps.

@Orkulf i think u should change 3 things get 2 hard drive instead of one run them in raid 0 will be faster then single 1.5tb also u dont need 850w psu 750 will be more then enough. if u want a dvd burner/blu ray player you should get the lg all in one (model #:UH10LS20 )

The 5970 murders the gtx480 in DX10. In games like Metro 2033 ( Dx11/heavy tessellation) the gtx480 owns.

You say this like it's a surprise? gtx 480 = single gpu = direct competition for the 5870, NOT the 5970. Majority of benches show that the 480 actually comes close to the 5970 in some cases, and even surpasses it at times (very limited and specific test setup though).
Just wait for their "gtx 495" or whatever they decide to call their dual-gpu card. It'll spank the 5970 in everything, and with good reason: nVidia are releasing SEVEN months after ATi.

GTX 295 is a dual card , 5870 is a single gpu card. GTX 295 vs 5970 is more right because 5970 is a dual too.

@Orkulf Yes, this is totally true. The 295 is a dual card which should beat the 5870. Also the sad part about this entire video is that the 295 didn't blow the 5870 off its feet like many Nvidia fanboys believe.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a total fanboy of ATI or Nvidia, but I lean to ATi as all their latest gen cards are much better if you consider heat, price, wattage usage, price, and in this case (295 vs hd5850) bad performance on the 295 part, in comparison. Did I forget to mention price?

I like ATI aswell but their drivers seem to kill my motherboard. When my 5870 (doesn't matter if I've got only 1 in or using crossifre) gets stuck in 99% activity, its slowely killing my PCI-E slot which gives my massive red line issues.
I think NVidia is a bit better. But worth its money? hell no.. and ATI cards are very good. Like I said: its just the drivers... (sometimes, for some people)

You forgot to mention CUDA for F&H, Physx and the fact that these benchmarks are wrong. In DX10 my 295 co op absolutely destroys my 470 @ 755 in pretty much everything I threw at both. Both were on I7 950 in the same PC.

@GamersCanGame Hwcompare is all theoratical... in reality SLI scaling is never trully 100% and because of this the GTX580 blows it away...512 Cuda Cores at 772Mhz >> 480 at 576Mhz...

If you crossfire 2 HD5850 you'll get a ton more fps than the GTX295, **For a hundred dollars more.** See what i did there.. eh.. the 295 is a hundred dollars more than the 5870...
Anyway, the new GTX480 running hotter than a furnace is the graphics card that competes against and wins against the 5870 which is funny because it'll be the same price as a 5970 and the 5970 absolutely murders that thing.

first off you've no idea how hot the gtx 480 runs, as you don't even own it. Second the 5970 does not go under 800 dollars because retail stores simply dont have'em in stock, the 480 go for 499 and give the same performance or even better in heavy dx11 rendering, 1 nvidia chip against 2 ati's. For almost half the price ;)

well i personnaly have gtx295... and it is a gr8 card BUT.... it is SLI card.... 2 GPUs on one card.... so your performance i really dependent on SLI support.... if game have poor SLI support it will be more like gtx 260.... and HD5870 is cheeper.... i would go for ATI

5870 is better than gtx 295 in my view. The wattage load is 100w lower, it is going to spare a little money each year. (Not much, but a little)

Yess, my 5870 vapor-x has finally beaten the GTX 295 co-op ed all thanks to the 10.3pre catalyst drivers.
Just finished benching on stock gpu clocks, GPU score: 18665 :D
