I'm gonna do something similar, at my apts--there's free wi fi from the clubhouse....but i have to step out to the porch area to catch 2 bars(good enough)--so i'm seting up something similar to what you made--but what do you do when it rains??? Do you just put a little plastic wrap on the card---what about lightning---yikes!!!

lightning wont catch your usb, i guess trees/buildings are higher. well you can cover your usb with plastic bag and wrap it. it works well during rains for me.

you can try to use cantenna or satellite (astro) dish.

Why not use an old satellite dish it gets better signal and it goes farther. I get get 2 to 5 miles with old direct tv satellite just tapes a wireless stick to the lnb and done.
