guitarists out there should know that he has two books on amazon called chord Khancepts and Pentatonic Khancepts. Im working through the chord book and it's really good.
Steve Khan...one of my absolute favorites. First heard him on an acoustic guitar duo album "Two for the Road" with Larry Coryell. I buy any cd I can find by him...but I've many vinyl albums I haven't seen re-releases of on cd. His website..1 of the best!!
You might also like a rather hard to get album called " Alive Mutha For Ya" with Billy Cobham, Alphonso Johnson, Tom Scott and Mark Soskin which is one of my all time favorite live albums which I haven't unfortunately seen posted yet on Youtube. Very brilliant playing.
There is nothing wrong with this bass player. Anthony Jackson is hip, but this guy makes it as well. Khan has no agent. That's the reason that you don't see him as much.
I was on a vacation in LA in the early eighties and tuned in a local jazz staton and heard a guitar player that kept me riveted to the radio in a trance. It was Steve Khan and I'm still on a mission to find out what LP.
It might be Eyewitness but can't find any samples to confirm.
that said, Steve Khan, like he shows here has got to be one of the greatest damn little known guitarists ever. fluid, lucid, imagination. geeezus H. this guy is good.
Steve Khan is playing a Gibson ES 335 made between 1958-1961 in this performance. What a beautiful ethereal sound, and proof that less is more! Steve's style is much more musical than other guitarists who always play too many notes. What a radical idea, that is playing beautiful chord passages with an occasional linear embellishment. Real music!!!!!
I am so impressed w Ben Perowsky's drumistic sound on these performances. His time is solid along w his approach to rhythmic modulation and his ability to play the straight 8's feel is impressive. He also can swing the rounded 8's when needed. I've met Ben from the early 90's and to see him live is always an adventure. I happen to play drums left handed on a rightie kit like Ben and it's always a lesson in drum playing when watching him. His dynamics is there and his approach is totally his own.
indeed. why does it have to be about what's "over there" instead of what's right here? everything always in relation to something else, instead of just "it for it's own 'it'" :P
didn't even have to read the original to which you are replying. the culture of 'but' permeates youtube.
Too bad there are no recordings with Steve Khan's band Eyewitness where he played with Anthony Jackson, Steve Jordan and Manolo Badrena. Unfortunately their recordings are not very well known, but it is by far one of most interesting jazz bands from the 80's...
Awesome as usual. Check out his sessions with the Breckers.
