This really is a tour de force for the two foo them. This is sung how a duet should be: with each singer carefully supporting the other and giving each other the chance to shine. Also, note the very real emotion shared between the two. Their hearts are duetting on this as well.
Ummmm.... This was a great performance. However, I didnt like how she told the story of the Supremes and how they got their contract. Everyone knows Florence Ballard first put the original group together and later the groups name was changed to the Supremes. It seems as though Diane is taking all the credit for the success of the Supremes.
It is so ironic. As a kid, my best friend was a big Smokey fan and I was a fan of Diana's. He would buy the new Miracles singles and I would buy The Supremes. We would sit in my bedroom and play the records for each other. At that time, we didn't know that the connection between the two of them was so deep. I would have loved to hear Diana performing/recording the songs from "Floy Joy" or a complete album produced by Smokey.
I need partners like these.....IS MOTWON STILL RECORDING..I WANNA RECORD WITH THEM SOMEDAY.>>>>
HEY DIANNA, NOW THAT'S SMOKE IS SINGING WITH YOU TONIGHT, AND I'M STILL HERE, YOU KNOW I' BEEN WAITING TWENTY FOUR YEARS..I LOVE YOU ALL MOTOWN LEGENDS..INCLUDING MICHAEL..MORE LOVE TO ALL YA SWEETNESS..>..>>LIVING NEXT DOOR TO ALICE
Thass the first time ah seen this juss now...and wow!!Yoo can RELLY feel and see the honest and genuine love and respect these two stalwart legends have for each other!!Man...they've had some times huh!!Watchin this has juss med meh feel relly good...Diane looks and sounds incredible and Smokes classy and elegant!!They've come a verRRrry long way...baybee!!Absolute pleasure and honour to watch and hear...God,ah love meh mah Diane...
I remember watching this when it came out during the summer . . . Smokey's t.v. show . . . Mary Wells was also on the program . . . . still have the vhs tape!!
What ever happened to REAL SINGING like this?! Damn they were great! Diana's original of this song was amazing, but still, I would love to have also heard her do a duet version of this classic tune with Smokey! WOW, what ever has happened to "popular" music?!!!
This is my second listen and I've re-assessed Smokey's performance. I think his pitch is off and it makes it difficult for Diana to sing with him. She does seem to struggle to sing around him. I'm not sure but there's something flat or dragged out about his singing. Maybe he was high.
Thanks for posting this! There are not a lot of live performances of hers between Central Park and Workin' Overtime. This fills in an important gap during which she was still at full strength. Very important historically. A great performance, too. Just like a few years earlier with Lionel Richie, she outsings Smokey. But he still sounds great, too.
I wonder if they ever dated. They have such great on-stage chemistry not to mention a long history. Anyone know? If they would have had kids, they would have been beautiful. Two beautiful attractive parents, such as hot Smokey and smoldering Diana!
their voices blended so well, I wished they had done a duo album together back then. oh wait a minute, they're both still performing, why not the two of them make an album together now? I'll be one of the first in line to buy it, and I know, there are many more fans like me. if mr. robinson and ms. ross are reading this, here's a an idea for your next project(s).
Life is so interesting sometimes. My first best friend was a big fan of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and I was a big fan of The Supremes. Every week we would take our allowances and buy their latest singles. We would sit in my bedroom and listen to the A and B sides. We never knew that Diana and Smokey had a similar childhood connection. Priceless.
I bet they had a nice dressing room hump after the show! LOL, just kidding, but I'm curious where you found this...I remember watching this back in 1985, wasn't it?
@lloydj74 It was 1985.. Motown started an hour long song fest after the success of Motown 25 and NBC bought the rights to it....it was only like 4 or 5 shows, but this was the 2nd one that honored miss ross w/smokey...........I havent seen this in a LONG time but I do have it on video that I taped that from that show....she was at Ceasers Palace again....had to be 1984 or so....I love they way she sings "You cant hurry love" in this....just fabulous!!!!!!!
Clips like this show the electricity between La Ross and her male Motown counterparts. Whether it's Smokey, Micheal, Stevie, Marvin or Paul Williams there seems to be genuine chemistry. Like a Queen with and her Lieutenant's..
Thank you for this great post. I have been searching for this clip for some time. Miss Ross and Mr. Robinson sound wonderful together. It is truly hard to believe they didn't record a duet.
Now that I think of it, their voices blended well together on "Pops We Love You".
Thank you so much for posting this. It is one of my favorite Diana clips of all time. It reminds why i became a fan. They are awesome! I wish they would tour now! wow! thank you! Devin in Denver
This brings back memories. It was a TV show in 1985 called the Motown Revue, hosted by Smokey. Only lasted a few episodes, but thank God they got Diana before it was cancelled. This is a classy, fantastic clip. Two of show business' best - at their best!
I have always wondered the exact same thing! Such angelic, ethereal, soulful harmony! I think "Someone That You Loved Before" from Diana's '99 CD would have been a great candidate for a Smokey duet. He was back on Motown from SBK then.
^^^^^^^^ that's what i thought this song was about (marvin gaye) did she date smoky?

Wasn't this supposed to be a sad song about how she missed Marvin Gaye and the fellow Motown singers that had died !

Hello gua117,
I had seen this performace about six months ago online. I think it was shorter than the one you posted (although I was a shorter clip)
It was the first time I had seen it and for some reason thought it was from the Arsenio Hall Show.
Now that I hear it mentioned I do remember hearing about the Motown Revue but had not seen it.
Again thanks.
