My initial impression was, well at least he's letting them speak.
I've seen 2 or 3 such early things from England. While at the time in America I think television hosts on talk shows etc were either ignoring heavy rock or making fun of it. By giving them a format it's almost taking the music seriously by default. (Could be wrong about that...)
And of course 'by then' there was all sorts of WILD longhair music... like Bartok, Schoenburg, loud strident stuff...rioting over Stravinsky had already been decades in the past. I think it must have been more the style/sensibility of the music more than just the loudness. - I bet my initial reaction to punk was prob really not all that different.
It has to be loud because it needs to overwhelm everything else, and force your focus to it(the music)and only the music! As a musician myself this would have to be the most asked question of my younger years, but the simple answer is "to make you notice what I'm doing!" and as I pointed out to a critic of rock music, the sound levels with a pipe organ or full blown orchestra are identical,Ie:120dbA,so they real answer is this person does not like the genre of music....so F..k him!
back then interviewers were these pompous old farts that hated rock n roll music and had no experience with it...like this twit.so he asks why is it so loud? what an imbosile...all the questions he could ask them about there music...
think twice and answer again! That's not what their music is about. As Waters says, go into your own levels of consciousness, that's where you'll find the meaning of the song.
Q: Why does it got to be so loud?
A: Because Syd's amplifier goes up to 11.

If you hear Syd's response it makes his desmise even sadder. He was a bright, well spoken and level headed guy. Before he lost his mind.
