This song is sung in Swahili, the first language I spoke. My parents took me to Tanganyika when I was 6 months old, to a place deep in the bush. My video has original footage, plus the lowering on the Union Jack on 9th December 1961. I have missed Africa, the warm people, the sun, the anguage, since we left. This song takes me back, & credit to Miriam, who was a South African Xhosa, for her Swahili, & Harry, whose Swahili singing is excellent too.
Ta pieśń na zawsze pozostanie w mej pamięci jako swoisty hymn miłości:). Kojarzony z pewnym Onym. Z nutą radości, smutku, cierpienia, frywolności, mieszanka, jak to w życiu.... . Czarodzieju, dziękuję:)
wow.. amazing rendition of the song.. has more emotion to it than the original.. and the lyrics are just a marvel.. one of the best love songs ever written. Bless Swahili..
A fantastic arrangement of the "MALAIKA" sheet-music (including the original rolling-bass), PLUS the lyrics, rhymed translations, chords and programme notes about the song, can be found by Googling 'konkani songbook'. Really fabulous!

Only for dreaming - so wonderful and so great - dancing with Malaika on a Caribbean Island in the sun or in the monnlight - Thank you to the singers for such beautiful feelings .... - dreaming forward - ... ...
Es la primera vez que la oigo, pero me ha calado tan hondo que me da una melancolia como si la conociera desde nina. It is the very first time that I heard this song, but I feel like I have known since I was a little girl. It is just beautiful. I am from Cuba but our incredible music is 80 percent from african influence.
Good song. But not anywhere close to the original, by Fadhili Williams of Tanzania, who died poor, after his copyright to this song was hijacked by those singing it here....in broken Swahili, one might add...
i don't speak the language, but i understand this song, love speaks all languages, and given the chance over comes all obstacles. 'my angel i love you my angel'.. my beloved man sang this song to me and it's very special to me as is he..a very beautiful and powerful song :)xxx
To date my all time favorite love song. Beautiful song, beautiful name!;) My mother has it on vinyl, I listen to it almost every time I visit home. This song reminds me of family, the beauty of nature and being in love.;)
What a fantastic version!! I have only heard of the Boney M version growing up as a kid in Sri Lanka back in the 70s. It is so great to hear it again in one of the two greatest voices ever. Thanks for sharing. Who sang the original ? and What does Malaika means ?
Malaika means "My Angel" in Swahili -- I don't really know the history of the song. I understand it's about a young man who wants to marry his true love, but doesn't have much money. To her, money is not as important as the love they have for each other.
The original was sang by Kenyan Fadhili Williams,RIP. Wonderful song. But I'm the spoiler here--there were copyright issues about this song early on. Fadhili is said not to have gained much from all the versions that have been recorded. In fact like many of his Kenyan counterparts-- e.g DAUDI KABAKA--check out his TWIST style-- died not well supported by their labour. As a Kenyan artist I worry about music and film rights a lot. Let's all protect the originators of such treasures as this.
I saved this name for seven years; in case I was blessed with a daughter after two wonderful sons! I was indeed blessed with a third child, Malaika,a beauty inside and out! :-)
The two greatest singers this planet ever produced! The song Malaika is in swahili (my native language), and it sounds heavenly when these two sing it! Thank you Mariam Makeba and Harry Belafonte!
Miriam Makeba also did her own version as a solo.
Great song great singing. Try this
I have done an instrumental version if you care to look at my channel

Malaika, nakupenda Malaika. Angel, I love you Angel.
Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio, And I, your young lover, what can I do.
Nashindwa na mali sina, we, Was I not defeated by the lack of fortune,
Ningekuoa Malaika. I would marry you Angel.
