Watch this guy master his craft leaves Me with an overwhelming sense of inadequacy. Obaterista is prolly one of his best solos IMO but how is he so good. That's the question that keeps me up at night
I won't point names and say fingers, but if anybody can find a better drummer than Le Master here, give me a heads up. Until then, I'm going into semi-eternal hibernation.
I grew up with Neil as a huge influence on rock drumming. As I study Jazz and the other greats like Gadd or Mayer or Weckl et. al. Neil sort of starts to trail behind them....BUT. I love how he molds his kit into a musical instrument. If you dissect technique, you find he uses a lot of singles and aren't as impressed as you were as a kid, listening. Still, for the rock genre, The Professor still rules. Thanks for this clip...reminds me who inspired me.

@trevrocks62 Maytag Dryers...3 of them....on that particular tour in 2002 they had T-Shirts in them which they threw out before starting the encore. THe next tour one of them was replaced with a vending machine. This snakes and arrows tour they were all replaced for Chicked Roasters. These guys aren't all right in the head if you ask me lol
Out of all of Neil's solos over the years, this is my favorite. 3:23 - 4:25 is amazing. You've got to watch this on DVD with a good sound system to appreciate what it really sounds like.
@computerpwner This was the Vapor Trails tour, and he called it 'O Baterista' on the Rio DVD. Not sure if that was supposed to be the official name for the solo, but a lot of the same concepts from The Rhythm Method from the Test For Echo tour are here. I'm not sure, though! Haha
@RollTheFemers Yeah... it's a lot of the same parts, just rearranged. I think he starts with the electric kit for "Der Trommler." The electric kit section he does here is my favorite... but the jazz ending is always cool too. Shit... it's all great. It doesn't matter what order he does it in!
@RollTheFemers I thought Neil decided to make the VT tour solo rather different from the T4E tour solo... there's a lot more similarity between the T4E and R30 solos IMO.
@RollTheFemers His Drum solos have always been refereed to as "the rhythm method." His DVDs makes references to "the rhythm method." O'Baterista was just the name because of the foreign country they filmed that particular show at. The r30 tour was filmed in Germany so they named it Der Trumbler for that particular show...
I was at this exact show (empty upper deck closed off...uhh where was everyone in Atlanta that night?) anyway, this is the best I had ever heard Neil's DW drums. They usually sound like shit. His best drums are the Tama's and Ludwigs he used for years.
@vaportrails44 I'm glad to hear someone else say it! I love his playing, but I never liked the way his DW's sounded from day one. In fact, I have never heard a DW set that I liked the sound of. I personally think his Ludwig's sounded the best, followed by the Tama's. I'd like to hear him on a set of Sonar SQ2's.
@VenumosFate Horrible? I guess masters like Steve Smith and Gavin Harrison, who could play whatever brand they wanted too, chose horrible drums. LOL. You must own a set of DW's
@A169KL Actually i do own a set of dW's. I mainly play dW's. I have Tama's. Ive played Ludwigs,Sonars etc...Every singe kit Neil has had sounds amazing..Some are better than others yes..Neil would never even think twice about even sitting on a throne next to sonars..
its amazing at his his age that he can pull off an 8 and a half minute drum solo almost every night. just one of the many reasons why i idolize him as a drummer.
I sat 20th row for this show and also have an excellent DAT recording of the entire show. Philips is a really nice arena but I still miss the Omni. PS I live 3 miles from The new Verizon Wireless Amphetheater in Alpharetta, GA were I saw the second leg of Snakes and Arrows. They played Hi-Fi Buys Amphetheater in Atlanta the previous leg.
ouf im on 1.38 had to pause just to say its best ever, i dont care about the rest :) but I'll still play it though.... unfortunately i didnt have a boner yet..

3 guys are in a bar,
One of them says: I have the longest arms in the world.
The other one says: I have the longest legs in the world.
The third guy says: I have the greatest musical talent.
So they decide to go to the office of the Guinness Book of World Records.
The first guy comes out and says: Yes! I do have the longest arms!
The second guy comes out and says: Great! I do have the longest legs!
The third guy comes out pretty angry and says: WHO ON EARTH IS RUSH?!?!

@erock33 Right on, the scar drum beat also figures in most of his solos. Scar is one of my fav song, so deep and spiritual.
