I'll say this about the current debate; Babylon 5 consists of believable characters who I get, and who, more often than not, literally move me to tears. I at no point believed in the characters of Battlestar Galactica. I NEVER cared if they lived or died, NEVER felt that what they were going through mattered, and never finished watching the show. BSG is, in my opinion, complete and utter ****.
I have to say, as an child I never much appreciated this TV Show. But looking back B5 is one, when not the most intelligent Sifi film! Sadly it never made it to the big screen! Thanks for uploading this!
Babylon 5 & Battlestar Galactica - reimagined version, of course - are SO similar in some ways that it's incredible. Both series were NOT about futuristic weaponry, robots, & gimmickry, but about people. The best Science Fiction is.
@xcomcmdr I've looked, but I can't find it. Some shows run in syndication, then just drop off the radar. I hope that they don't stop running BSG re - runs on SyFy like they have B5.
@knoxvilleguy2 FarScape runned in syndication, but maybe they stopped. If you really want to watch it, it's on DVD, but they are quite expensive!
So, I would recommend you to make up your mind first.. Maybe with infos (not too much! ;-) especially not wikipedia english and it's spoilers!), critics, trailers (not too much either, and some of them are bad!), etc...
The first season may seems like juste lone episodes, but it kicks up after 1x16, and the true story begins...
Problem with BG was that they considered technology so negligible a concept that they don't have to give people a consistent environment to act in. As we are made who we are to no small degree by our environment (Think of how mobile phones or the internet have influenced notions of privacy), a focus on people can only work if the stage they are acting on is either clearly an abstract stage, as in theatre performances, or is consistent enough with how people act.
@ohauss BSG was always about the characters, Pres. Roslin & Bill Adama could've been analogous to John Sheridan, especially the " dying leader " idea, personified by Laura Roslin & later Sheridan. There are many parallels. GaiusBaltar became a religious leader, so did G'Kar ( Although G'Kar did so reluctantly ).
As I said, if the stage isn't credible, the characters aren't, because while their actions might not be arbitrary in and of themselves, they arise out of purely arbitrary circumstances, which again diminishes the possibility to relate to them. And Roslin is the worst example: "Oops, she has terminal cancer - oops, she doesn't - oops, she does again". A pretty good way to make a mockery out of a serious disease.
@ohauss - Yeah, they did stretch that, AND the " Starbuck is an ANGEL " thing. Unusual for a show that didn't rely overly on mysticism & spirituality, & stressed rationality. At least the Colonial pantheon - lords of Kobol - were thought to possibly be a form of Cylon. ( In their backstory )
@ohauss you are perfectly right. B5 story rises from its environment (scifi) and characters. not one against the other like in BSG. B5 is well written to make the world tangible AND the characters to matter. It's why it's possible to relate to Sheridan or Delenn or G'kar.
@oomusd B5 also uses religion / spirituality & mysticism a LOT, even though JMS is supposedly an atheist, & Ronald D Moore used the " angel " idea w / Starbuck in BSG, & the idea that God led the Galactica & the Colonial Fleet to Earth 150,000 years before the rise of modern man, & the human - Cylon hybrid Hera w / actually the mother of the " human " race ", even though RDM is an atheist. Interesting.
@knoxvilleguy2 I'm going to have to ask you to do me a favor, and please don't take this the wrong way but never EVER compare the awe striking epicness of Babylon 5 to that sci fi channel conformist over dramatic soap opera "battlestar galactica"
Because 2 sci-fi shows set in space in the distant future with actual character development and decent acting should never be associated with each other right? God forbid we start expecting our space heroes to be able to string together a cohenrent sentence now and then.
that is true. without space patrol orion (or whatever name it has), star trek wouldn't have been possible. And without that, modern sci-fi shows wouldn't be possible. Even if they are quite easy to laugh at now, they were great once.
Oh jeez. Eliminate the overly-long intro and just show me the damn speech

I LOVE Sheridan's speech in this. Death to tyranny, long live liberty! Long live a free Earth and a free humanity that I can be proud to serve!

Since this is Sheridan's speech upon liberating Earth why is it a picture of Centauri Prime? (Notice the two moons)

I get goosebumps every time I listen to a speech from Babylon 5. It's like a political thriller that happens to be set in the future.

It sucks that the video showing the last battle for Earth was removed.

A speech that would rouse the dead to rise up and fight...

That planet is Centauri prime, not Earth.

Great speech, but can you make it so it soesn't fade out at the end. It really makes the speech lose impact.

@knoxvilleguy2 You can count FarScape wich is centered about it's characters, too. Great show!

@xcomcmdr Never could manage to catch FarScape very much.
Don't you mean " FarGate " ( " Aqua Teen Hunger Force " made jokes about " The FarGate " in 1 episode. ) ? ;~)
knoxvilleguy2 1 year ago
@knoxvilleguy2 Hum, naaa. Only meant FarScape, the one and only show with an alien puppet done by Jim Henson's company wich has three stomachs. ^_^
And pop culture references by the main lost-in-space character (the only human in the show :p) all over the place.
And drugs, romance, violence, ... But no chocolate in the whole universe. :-(
I'd just say watch it, if you can. ;-)
