Hi at about 6:00, when you compare the two samples, how does the sample YOU recorded sound good at all if it still doesn't have an impulse response on it? At this point aren't you just EQ'ing that sample and not applying an IR?
I'm doing in this in Cubase, using POD Farm for the amp and REVerance to load the IR file. Only problem is, after matching the EQ and applying it to the guitar track with no cab, it still sounds like just the preamp but with different EQ settings. In order to get rid of that shitty noise I have to load up a cab in POD Farm, which I feel is subtracting from the point of matching the tone. Any help?
Quick question: can you please tell me what your signal chain looks like? are you going directly in (D.I) or using some sort of soundcard or interface? I have a pod x3 and I would love to get to know how to use this. :)
I got to the point where I was rendering the imported test tone with matching activated. I did all that and processed it but when I use my ampmodeling with this IR loaded it stills sounds like a pure preamp signal. What am I missing?
@clarkkentjob That's the funny thing. It is activated and my recorded sample sounds just like the original. But I can't seem to make a proper IR out of the testsound.
@Herrdesrings Hmm... maybe the IR plugin isn't working? Do a quick test and add the IR you made as an audio file into your project. Run it through Ozone and see what kind of curve it has. If it's just a flat curve then you are exporting it wrong. If the curve looks right then it's the IR plugin that's not working right.
@clarkkentjob I got it. I forget to leave the test tone file in the Deconvolver tool. Works like a charm now! Thanks for helping me sorting this one out.
@FazSaber Haha, it's def. not all about Dream Theater tones. :) They are all pretty much spot on. I've done a few other Paramore IR's already. TBH I'm not into prog metal nowadays. I just know how much money DT spent to get those tones and it makes me feel like I'm making the money when I steal their tones. :D
@FazSaber I'm pretty sure I used my PRS for that. In this clip I'm playing an EBMM guitar so it shouldn't matter. You might be doing something wrong in the process.... follow my every step accurately. :)
Watch the output level of the sweep! Sometimes it goes up to +30db (when the guitar volume is around 0) try to correct that by decreasing the volume when exporting. Maybe that will help
I'm having a problem with this: After i've done the matching and activate the eq i get a sound like it's playing in a tunnel, like a weird type of reverb, but i don't have any reverb on, it's coming from the izotope! Please help
@DarkAngelsDelight You can and I've done it but it's a lot more complicated. People don't realize that drums have pitch too. So in orded to match EQ a drum sound you'll need to have the drums in the same pitch which is A LOT OF WORK in the manual world. Digitally it's a bit easier like SD2 has a pitch control. I've match EQ'd the Paramore Snare and the Periphery Snare f.ex. and you have to use the smoothing control or it'll sound funny. I advice to use samples rather than match EQ on drums.
@danyy1831 Well EQ wise yes but this technique works well on distorted guitar because it's not a dynamic instrument. Match EQ on vocals/drums/bass/clean guitar is more complicated. You will most likely have to use the smoothing in Ozone.
I did a test where I match EQ'd all my tracks with the Rock Band MOGG tracks and basically ended up with the same mix EQ-wise as f.ex. Paramore have. :) Still you need to work with compression etc. but EQ-wise you can really rip off a professional mix.
Ok so I think I did everything you said but the impulse I load into lecab doesn't sound nearly as good as when I turn on Ozone. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? I think there may be too many highs in the signal but I think it's just generally lacking eq. Maybe export settings of the daw?
@stchristoph2000 Yeah I guess I didn't make it clear enough in the video. You should have all of the settings matching. You should match EQ one side of a mix, like I'm only matching Constant Motion's left track with my playing. My sessions is in 48khz and 32bit so the Test Tone should be 48khz, 32bit and MONO. Also the match EQ'd sweep should be 48khz 32bit and MONO. And look at my settings in the Voxengo. It doesn't work if it isn't just like I have it.
@clarkkentjob thanks for the clarification but that's exactly what I did. As I said it sounds great with Ozone on but the generated IR doesn't sound great at all. I have the project and sweep settings of 44.1 and 24bit and of course mono. I copied the settings of Voxengo and ozone exactly and as I said it worked amazing for Ozone.
And also remember to DISABLE your amp modeler when exporting the IR. In the video I just say "disable that". :) Not sure if people notice what I disabled.
@clarkkentjob wow.. I'm an idiot and you're my hero. That was the problem and now it works like a charm. It's so much more fun to jam along with the original sound. Thank you sooooo much for putting this video up. I kept trying for hours to make my sound match a song just so I could play along with EQ curves and this still trumps my attemps significantly :D Again thank you very much.
I tried this, but failed because I couldn't find a part of the song without drums that ended up messing with the EQ of the guitar afterwards. Is there a way to get around this?
@apuforyou Well no... You have to find a guitar tone with NOTHING on top of it. No drums ringing, no bass, no vocals. Just the pure guitar tone. One cool way to get pure guitar tracks is to download Rock Band MOGG files. You can separate guitar tracks etc. Basically you should search for guitar intros or other guitar parts.
@reverweb Well.. sure you can but they won't sound 100% the same as the originals since these IR's only work with the patches I made with the TH2. This isn't capturing a mic setup. It's actually a tricky IR that makes my patch sound just like Petrucci. Pay attention that in this video the matched IR makes a Rectifier sound like a Mark series amp and that's quite a leap tonewise. So I suggest you take your time and learn to do it yourself from this tutorial :)
@guitarDouchebaggery It's underrated... although I have a loooooooooot of plugins I'm actually using it for mastering sometimes. It's a transparent plugin for sure.
Clark, is it possible to do this exact matching process with an Axe-Fx? Just record the Axe-Fx signal without the cabinet simulation?

When I use Kefir, LeCab etc, its not the same. But its same in project(when used izotope)
When i use exported(from deconvolver) it's more BOOMY then Izotope.
