This is... fantastic. Why is this piece never played as often as you think it should be? Because it's an early work of Tchaikovsky's? Or what? I'm floored, almost literally. Of course, that could just be the vodka... But this movement is certainly helping!
Leo Tolstoy cried when he heard this Andante cantabile. The fact that made Tchaikovsky proud for whole his life. He respected Tolstoy extremely.
"The greatest writer that ever existed and exists now is Leo Tolstoy. His name is enough for Russian person not to bow his head humbly when someone began to list all the great things that Europe contributed to the world" (Tchaikovsky)
There are no words to describe the genius of Tchaikovsky! This piece is one of those which are so close to my Russian soul. I feel every note here...Thanks for posting.
Merci cellist .....
@TheAnonnation Many thanks! Cellist's failure to understand my question led me to wonder whether I may have been naive and that the builkding in question may have existed only in the artist's imagination.
I believe that the wisdom of Tchaikovsky in writing quartets depends from the love that he had for the music of Mozart. Beside the formal rigor we find however gashes of great romanticism.
@cellist140887 Very good insight. Its not surprising that Mozart was Tchaikovsky's favorite composer. He dedicated the his whole Orchestral Suite No # 4 to Mozart by arranging several of his melodies, subtitled "Mozartiana". One can feel Mozart's influence in Tchaikovsky's rich but transparent harmonies and neo-classical textures. Tchaikovsky's wonderful Serenade for Strings and Varioations on Roccoco theme are also very much "Mozartean".
Thank You.

Nice image choice :) I find Tchaikovsky's (and, more generally, Russian) music always goes well with winter imagery!

This isn't phrased as impeccably as I'm used to hearing from cellists... nevermind. That's just the first sixteen measures. Beautiful.
