"My father sends me money and I spend it very fast, on a girl I met at Berkeley in a social science class. Yes & we learned about her body, but her mind we didn't know. Until deep rooted attitudes & morals began to show/she'd settle for suburbia and a little patch of land. So I gave her up for music & The Free Electric Band." I left some words out, but those are great lyrics!!
First heard this in a hotel bar in Bangkok, Thailand in Sept 73. Just me, my buddy and the barmaid...we drank and asked her to play it over several times! Music was good then.!!! :-)
Albert Hammond's best track is "The Free Electric Band". And that was on an Australian assorted artists compilation from 1973 - "Rock Explosion". Which in retrospect was one of the better assorted artists albums, as it had the studio version for this, along with John J,Francis' "Play Momma Play", one from horny Abigail;"Cassandra" from Sherbet;and a few other classics. Can't get a copy for myself these days - the old pre-recorded cassette I had of it is now history, but then, there's always Google.
Whether or not this clip is the miming of the recorded version, its close to what I'd want,if not completely it.Otherwise,Albert Hammond did his live versions very accurately to the recorded. "Rock Explosion'' edited out a verse eh? Well, you learn something new every day - its years since I've heard "Rock Explosion" - and probably years,if ever, til I hear it again. And thanks - its far out someone else recalling "Rock Explosion" - in particular. I'll request "Free electric Band" on radio soon.
THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER BUT I LOVE MY MOM AND DON'T WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hour
Wow this song takes me back. Too many cigarettes, way too much coffee, unemployemnt, a religious fixation and serious mental health issues, yet this song was on the radio constantly, reminds me of bad times and good days.
I didn't know Albert Hammond sang this. Its amazing what you learn on youtube! Great song but hey, what about those ghastly clothes fashions back then!?
"my future in the system", was decided by the Finnish racism since the birth ; not an engineering man, not an ordinary citizen, but one of the structural unemployment's beggars in the neighborhood reserved for the poor, dark haired immigrants in the second or in the third generation.
So called "ghetto" from the 1930:n Germany ,that´s function is translated to be suited to work socially in the 2000´s century´s EU circumstances.
While this song did not chart high on the singles charts, he had other more succesful hits with, "It Never Rains In Southern California" and "Im A Train." He also wrote songs for Elton John and others.
I grw up with an LP called"fANTASTIC"...... On that record was also"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georegia" by Vickie Lawrence and another song called"Back When My Hair Was Short".....I

I went to school in hand washed shirts with needly ordered hair,
And the school was big and newly build and filled with light and air,
The teachers tought us values that we had to learn to keep,
And they clipped the ear of any idol kid who went to sleep,
Than my father organized for me a collage in the east,
But I went to California the sunshine and the beach,
My parents and my lectures could never understand,
Why I gave it up for music and the free electric band.

My father is a doctor, he's a familiarly man,
My mother works for charity whenever she can,
They're both good clean Americans who abide by the law,
They both stick up for liberty, they both support the law,
My happiness was paid for when they laid their money down,
For Summers in a Summer camp, and Winters in the town,
My future in the system was talked about and planned,
But I gave it up for music and the free electric band
