There are a few main differences between this and Irish dancing (barring the clothes and the arms, which are obvious). One is that everyone seems to do the same steps, or very very similar. Am I right? In Irish we're all going in different directions the whole time! I'm interested to know more about the competitions. How many people are there, typically, at a major like this? How many dances does one have to do?
If you're dancing in a Championship (as these dancers are doing), then yes, there are "set steps," which they all have to perform. In non-Championship sections, dancers may choose any recognised steps.
Numbers vary greatly from competition to competition, and section to section. There could be as few as three per section, or up to about 25 (more for World Champs!)
Number of dances: ranges from three to ten per competition, usually around six.
@MapleBok Thank you for the information! It seems to be a lot smaller than Irish dancing ... at world champs there you'll have hundreds, and even at smaller competitions you could have forty or fifty dancers ...
@delorfinde Sorry..... I was (unintentionally!) vague on the answer of the TOTAL number of dancers at a competition.... in total, all sections combined, there are sometimes several hundred competitiors. Some run over two or more days.
@MapleBok Ah, I see! Yeah, in Irish the Worlds are usually four days (five days? I'm a bit unclear on that), and they generally have, well, a lot of competitors. Thousands, or so I've been told, though I couldn't say myself. It's really interesting knowing about other dancing :)

im an irish dancer, and we use sock glue to keep our poodle socks up, do you guys use sock glue too? its seems like your socks would be much harder to keep up since theyre longer.
You wouldn't happen to have any of your other championship dances from that weekend would you? That piper is PHENOMENAL whoever he/she, and I'd love to hear his/her other tunes.

your dancer has great energy and stamina, I love that she still had great elevation at the end of the dance!
