Right around 3:27 Dave Bickler really struts his stuff.... I always wonder what happened with this band.... Bickler's voice gave them that All-American rock and roll sound that could go head to head with the best that the metal bands could offer. EOTT was heavy and sweetly melodic at the same time, but Bickler could obviously get a little rough too when he needed it....
bickler actually stepped aside because of vocal problems and helped the band find jimi to replace him. they are both awesome. there are qualities to each of their voices that I really like. I don't prefer either. I just like to listen to them. I think maybe the earlier stuff has a little more edge to it, not quite as refined. but, so what.
@btruckno1 I first heard survivor on the radio in 78' I believe. Great band. Do you know if bickler and jimi ever sang or dueted on any survivors songs? i think that would be great to listen to . Thanks, RH
Originally they said he left because he wanted a solo career. Rather than him leaving - he should have sought out vocal instruction. Any good vocal instructor could have had him up and going in no time with a daily routine if he was having a vocal malady.
Dave Bickler was the baddest looking cat of his day, and its massively supsetting he never released anything else in a proper band. Its sickening their is no survivor retrospective DVDs on the market
It's easy to forget just how good and consistent the Eye Of The Tiger album is. There are some MONSTER songs on that record that get overlooked because of the title track. Along with Caught In The Game it's my favourite Survivor album...and Dave Bickler is THE man!
Peterik is and always was the writer and brains of Survivor. Orig member of Ides of March, etc. Played Les Paul on this song, sang and also played organ/piano on most Survivor tunes. Last I heard, he doesn't have much to do w/ the new band "Survivor"
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! I totally thought Dave Bickler was Jimmi Jamison, so Dave Bickler was the one who got sugery on his vocal cords, and the one who sings this song? I listened to a newer version of "eye of the tiger"by Dave Bickler and he can`t sing anymore it sounded really bad!!!! I kind of feel sorry for him that he can`t sing good any more.
My dad was telling me to look up some of the songs he listened to when he was a kid, I did and that is how I am like obsessed with thier music now!!!!:D
Dave B., if you read these--you rock!!! The only thing more awesome than a great rock voice, is singing for(-and the gratitude of-}and to little people! Those kids are so lucky! The best decision I ever made too...selfless and fun. God Bless.
Too bad that most people now only know "Survivor" the T.V show....Instead of one of the best bands!! The whole album rocks! On my top ten if I were stranded on an island or a far away place.....Cheers!
@rushangus: I'm sure more people are familiar with this band than the TV show simply because of the Rocky Films. I mean, who hasn't heard "Eye of the Tiger"?
I still get chills seeing this!! This was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. Frankie's guitar riffs thru there are awesome, love the solo, and only Dave can sing this. They never got the pr they should have and Dave is the better singer. Anyone out there have info on Dave's solo demo or possibly The Fire Makes Steel sessions?
I did an on line search for Survivor Fire Makes Steel unreleased demo a few times and it finally popped up and I bought it. It's good. Dave's voice is his own. There's quite a few good songs on it. Dave is da man!
Still have the vinyl copy of this album my dad bought me back in the early 80's.My first introduction to "hard rock" leading to the murky world of metal ha ha.gonna through it on now,for old times sake.Great musicians.
Awesome video! Loved Bickler and the raw hard rock guitars. The stage here reminds me of the good old days at the bars in WI where we drove up to see them every weekend they played. Wish there were more vids like this. Jim going wild on rhythm guitar, Frankie's solos, Marc and Stephen hitting it hard, and Dave's pristine piercing vocals. Those were the days. Just saw them again at a local fest in IL with Robin at front, and they are still great now, but nothing beats those old memories.
Wow! Wish I had your memories. I just 'discovered' Bickler last year... saw Dio in IL last year but I definitely woulda drove from KY to see Survivor, with or without the Bick!
If you want to see Survivor live, they play Joliet IL on 9/20 outside Harrah's casino. Frankie and Marc are the only "originals", but they are still great and Robin is awesome! I was lucky to be able to see them on those tiny stages in the bars at least 15 times. The first single "Somewhere in America" was a local hit, and the bars were always packed. Later, I was also lucky to hear an extra casting call for the blurred nightclub scene in "I Can't Hold Back" vid. Great band, great memories!
Yes, Marc is the 2nd drummer, but I consider him an "original" at over 25 years with Frankie, with only a short time away from the band. Gary Smith was the original drummer on 1st LP, and when they first played the bars and other Chicago area concert events, but IMO, Marc deserves a lot of credit for the final sound of Survivor from Premonition forward. He will always be an "original" to me.
I wonder why there are so few Survivor videos from the best album of the world: Eye of the Tiger. The album is full of great songs that haven't got the glory they deserve! And no one can sing like Dave Bickler did. I believe his high singing style was the cause of developement of those polyps in his vocal cords.
I would applaude for every video from the Tiger album.
I wish Frankie used more of the hard rock playing that he displayed on this album. Children of the Night and Eye of the Tiger are hard rock anthems. They would've done well to have continued in that direction....
