Ameling is too curt, Battle is light but pure, Fleming is too heavy and aggressive, Hendricks is a bit sharp, the goddess Price is divine but holding back her huge voice, Tebaldi is too theatrical but the voice is so open. If only she took it a bit slower. Where is Marion Anderson?
I'm sure a competition is not the point of making the video....!! I would like to think that it is a celebration of these great sopranos as they add their own personal touch through their own voice bringing by way of their experiences!! Because of this Ave Maria means something different to each of them... I appreciate the video for displaying that!! They all were the best!....
Great idea! The trouble is that when the singers are all of such high level, one can't help feeling a bit disappointed at hearing only a few lines from each... However, it's such pleasure to hear six great voices - so to say, at once! Thanks for the posting.
It depends on how you feel at the time. For delivery in the "tradtional" style, I would go for Elly. I would go with Leontyne as far as depth and soul are concerned. Of course, I loved th version by Renata, who delivered the impassioned version. Overall, I love Leontyne's version the best. Why? Because everything Leontyne sings is wonderful.
Nicely done. I agree with previous poster - Elly Ameling, then Kathleen Battle. Why isn't Barbara Bonney included, she is excellent in this, and I think could challenge the first two ladies. I also much prefer it sung in German - as the composer intended, as a prayer of Ellen from Lady of the Lake, not just simple church song.
@carlosthomasfernande Ellen was hiding in a cave at the time, and she was praying for her and her father's safety. So yes, it's still a prayer, but it has a story. Also, the German words are poetic and beautiful (as are the English words of Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake"). Plus, I like everything sung in the original language as the composer intended.
@jewelmarkess i totally agree. the words in german and the english translation are beautiful. I think the Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer/poem as well. The divine nature of the melody and the intention of Scott's poem matching with the Hail Mary is truly one of those magical music moments
all beautiful and with one exception all American Divas. in the begining ,so it goes, there was the word.and the word was with God .When that word was pronounced, it must have sounded exactly like Renata.
@ImPitch... thank you for the labor you put forth to contribute this video. It is a treasure!

:-) Kathleen Battle sounds so American! She never did master her diction in other languages... But my oh my, her voice is near perfect!

Elly has the most natural way of using her instrument and the best diction.

@jewelmarkess Ellen was praying to Mary so it was just a simple church song in Lady of the Lake too...

Very clever video! Elly Ameling wins, with Kathleen Battle a close second. They leave the others behind in the dust!
