If only actors in real life were as noble and heroic as the people they portray. Only a few. Ricardo Montalban, and maybe Gary Cooper. Who else? Not many.
@Hollololoway nice query. i'm gessing u'r being retorical, but if not then my take is that rodrigo's first reaction is dan it: u threw away my stuff! It's MY burden, dam it. mine! i pulled it up yur dang cliff. I accomplished some thing big, but then, suddenly it dawns on him his burden--and the 'accomplishment' of dragging it up the clifff is worthless, esp to his ded brothr & ded/enslaved/bereft indians. Crist's sacrifice is worthy and makes them worthy -- and makes them bold to forgive. cool?
Never in all of my 65 years of watching movies have I wittnessed such an authentic illustration of deep repentence for wrong doing. I would love to hear Dinero explain how he was able to do this. The man is a very gifted actor.
If a man like him came to my village and kidnapped and killed people like this guy did, I would want him dead because I am a vengeful and hateful soul. Look how he crawled up the mountain and asked for forgiveness. I guess this scene illustrates perfect Christianity and forgiveness.
One must believe that every human being deserves a second opportunity; the striking thing is that the indians give it to the slave trader. Not so "dummy", I think is the message to the first-world espectators, who normally think we are the top, top of knowledge, top of generosity.... My favourite film, undoubtedly.
I've never seen better scene in the movies, that express the true christian's spirit.A lesson from the simple indians even to the fathers, proving that Jesus can reach anyone...
This slave trader repents and engages in penance, submitting himself to the indians. Notice how the indian cuts the rope that holds the slave traders armor and swords that weight him down. Notice how the forgiving blood of Jesus Christ floods through his veins and the weight of the sinners evil falls into the river.

The hardest form of forgiveness is the ability to forgive yourself.

How De Niro was never nominated for an Oscar for this film astounds me. It did win an Oscar for Best Cinematography.

The music by Morricone is as important as the excellent acting. At 1:24 and following, the
music is heartbreakingly poignant.

To err is human; to forgive, Divine. One of the most spiritual scenes in the movies I have ever seen.

The most beautiful scene of inner, spiritual transformation of man, the transformation of evil into good. Thank You so much.

They cut his armor off and dumped that burden into the river. It must have been like taking a spiritual dump.
