The engine in this car is obviously using the 2.5 litre redblock stroker kit I mentioned, which are fairly common and well known, in conjunction with the 16 valve head. The 2.5 kit is more often associated with the 8-valve redblock engine, but works with both.
The 2.5 litre whiteblock engine as fitted to the 960 is the 6-cylinder unit only available as a 24 valve engine, which is the modular all-alloy engine with a lot in common with the 4 and 5-cylinder whiteblocks.
The 16 valve engine was most commonly fitted as a naturally aspirated 2-litre in the 940, but 2.3 litre versions were built. The 2.5 litre capacity is a common aftermarket long-stroke capacity for the 4-cylinder 'redblock' cast iron block engines. The 960 DID come with a turbo 4-cylinder 8-valve redblock engine in some markets, but in others it was only available with the 24 valve 6 cylinder 2.5 or 3 litre 'whiteblock' all aluminium alloy engine.

@kideafinn That 's right! The 960's even came with the "old" B280F V6 engine for some markets in the beginning (Australia if I am correct), but were later replaced by the 6 in line a year later. Also the 960's have been delivered for some markets with the VW 6 in line turbo diesel engine in some EU countries! No kidding!

Some people here say this car has an original 2.5L, 4 cylinder engine?
As far as I know, Volvo has only made inline 5 cyl and 6 cyl versions of 2.5L engines.
I have never heard of an 2.0L version.
