He is struggling with drug addiction which isn't exactly easy to get rid of. Imagine that sex is bad, now imagine yourself trying not to have sex for the rest of your life. That's how hard it is to get rid of drug addiction, and the fact that most people overlook his efforts to quit drugs is just inhumane.
