The next thought this is giving me is that making people believe they realised something by giving some hints feels kind of like manipulation too.
So yes I agree with the message of the song but at the same time it makes me feel more manipulated by NIN than by the government which I questioned from the beginning.
@rabidmonk5 THIS IS NOT SPAM. look up DVD video soft and D/L the free youtube to mp3 converter and you can get any song or audio off of youtube. I don't know that you can an official release of it.
Great video. War criminals need to go to jail. WAKE UP PEOPLE!. Watch "Invisible Empire" and 9/11 blueprint for truth on youtube. Research the New World Order.
Still love this song. I've been reading what other people think it's about, but still think it's about subversion and manipulation created by politics and corrupt (or at least misguided) media.
Current music industry think subversion is a valuable asset to bid on... It gives teenagers false vision of what being subversive and the safeguard of truth really is. NIN on the other side never gave me truth nor lies. It only pushed the real questions on my mind. Reznor could be wrong, he could be right, yet it's up to you to decide. He gave you freedom of interpretation. Keeping fighting about the meaning of its songs is just how we should keep doing if we respect his work...
i like to turn this video on, mute the audio and play the album version over it. it still fits really well. i always liked the album version better than the live version.
Even chimpanzees exhibit basic culture. Culture is another biological function.
Technically speaking different races are just slight divergences of genetics, not really alternate species exactly, over time different species will develop.
It will probably not be along racial lines, but class lines. The rich will develop into a different species than the poor. Something like in "The Time Machine" The morlochs and the eloi.
Well there is biological history. We evolved from primates, we are very similar to both chimpanzees and bonobos. It stands to reason that the majority of our psychological and physical makeup comes from animals biology. I mean, we literally are animals, why should it be strange that we are essentially the same as other animals?
That's what I'm saying though, humans have symbolic thinking, which puts their feelings and experiences into a framework. That's the only real difference between us an animals (or so science seems to suggest).
Well I think animals have emotions. When you get down to insects its likely more pure chemical impulse. But just look at a dog, it feels complex emotions like shame, and joy. Emotion is not alien to the animal kingdom at all, it seems.
As far as I have seen, the only difference is symbolic thinking. The ability to fabricate an alternate reality in the mind. Everything else is shared with animals.
It's our ability to reason that sets us apart from the rest of the animals. Most of us don't use that to it's full potential. It's easier to use stereotypes, rules of thumb and generalizations to make things simpler. But like dead reckoning, if we make an incorrect assumption/reading early on then we can stray off the path. We should be able to think critically, discover, and then recover. But most of us don't.
Of course if someone else is behind establishing that incorrect assumption and we believe it then they in effect control us. So even though you think you're thinking independently, you're actually not.
A lot of people choose not to see the truth, they cling to other peoples' ideas and refuse to question them. BEcause discovering that one or more of the ideals you base your existence on (not to get existential here) are in fact false. Then everything you believe based on those ideals is false or misguided. The comfort derived from those beliefs falls away to the unknown. Fearing the unknown, we'd rather not reevaluate ourselves. But we need to. And introspection is sorely lacking today.
Animals reason things all the time, dont be so ignorant as to not recognize this. We are a product of our thoughts which are so heavily influenced by our animal ancestors you probably dont even realize it.
Where can I find the download to this version of the song? I have the Original and the "Quiet Tracks" Version, but I really like this version. Anyone please please? Thank you.
this song hits me hard and the video, when i see that shot of those beautiful suburban homes i just look out my window an all i see is drugs violence addiction prostitution an hopelessnes and then i wonder, does they know we exist?
open our eyes to what trent? something you nor anyone else before you has ever found? Trying to show us shocking imagery to muster a bunch of idiot assholes into altering their bullshit beliefs. We didnt choose this crap reality and we dont have to embrace it if we dont want to. I say this: if you want to be safe an secure in your own little world that you create, then go on ahead and do it. Ignorance is bliss, who are trent or i to try and take that away from anyone?
The fact that we are animals. Chimps that can lie, and fabricate weapons. We create the idea of money, of value, racial or ideological superiority. Then we use our complex brains to build weapons to obliterate life.
All it really is, is instinct. And like the ape pulling the flamingo out of the air, we drag the world along with us to hell.
It's a provocative song. I am a Zeitgheist fan, and not to sound paranoid but we should question everything. Very few things in reality are altruistic and many things that come at a low cost to us is costing people somewhere a lot. And I'm not talking about money, money is an arbitrary measure like inches or kilograms. Yet this measure governs almost everything we do in North America. It creates the disparities we see or experience everyday on street corners and in our homes.
Money talk aside, we wake up and walk out our doors to our vehicles, complain about the weather, buy a coffee, drive to work (or the mall), complain about the traffic jams, complain about the stupid drivers, etc. We have nothing to complain about... Our iPods, Acuras, and HDTV, even a banana or a cup of coffee has costs associated with it that most never see. Few stop to wonder how what we own came to be ours. We just pay for it and continue being ignorant.
Think about this. How did we go from hoping the harvest is good and finishing the neighbors house before the winter sets in, to maxing out a credit card with impractical clothing and flimsy electronics. These are prime motivators now. People don't work with the thought of shelter and food foremost on their minds they are trying to figure out how to get the money for a boob job or a X-Box 360. What are we really afraid of if we don't have those things?
Meanwhile, most things we strive for (electronics, fancy cars, cosmetic surgery, clothing) results in people and countries elsewhere in the world have less resources and get little in return. So while you're listening to your iPod or driving in your Escalade there are at least 10 people who may not be eating tonight and it's indirectly tied to that one item, let alone the 1000's that were produced in that batch. You'd pay a real price if you tried buying everything "Made In America"
Wow man...you're right. I'm gonna go sell my Xbox 360, the Escalade, the HDTV, and tell my wife she can't get that boob-job after all... Oh wait, I don't have any of that sh!t; and you know what? I'm no more happier without it than I would be with it; because life is not the collection of sh!t around you. It is the experiences that we pass through accumulating that garbage. btw, I'm agreeing with you. We're all screwed up in this country.
This is Trent's attempt. Too bad people will only just talk about it...Nothing more. As he said, "You can choose to believe."
"Hiding in the trees" may also mean that we're hiding behind our trival possessions and our fake way of life. He ignore it, we try to play the ignorant role because it's easier. Beause "We're afraid to see."

Not so, that metaphor is based on an adage, "You can't see the fire for the smoke." or more specifically, "You can't see the forest for the trees." Meaning you are so entrenched in the situation or circumstances that you cannot possibly find a good unbiased vantage point to see where you are or where you're going. We all need to step back and question everything we hold as fact or put our faith in. Only then can we see clearly. Now...
...if we're hiding in the trees then he's saying that we find security in those things we hold as fact or put our faith in. If we didn't have those things then what would we do? We fear the unknown, it's human nature. We need to surpass that human limitation and embrace change. Let me quote another artist, "I'm still just a rat in a cage." Well that cage is our own creation and it's constructed by our own beliefs and reinforced by our fears. That cage is our own mind. Question it all.
That said. Our generation, for I am Gen X or the early Gen Y, has had it's ability to think critically crippled by all forms of media including television and the Internet. We can't do anything with a TV set except change the channel or turn it off, but the Internet can be a wealth of REAL information. Just steer clear of anything with a brand name associated with it. Don't limit yourself to one idea, read lots of them and make up your own mind, and talk about it.

Well, to be brief, he has a lot of passion, is a multi-instrumentalist, is an excellent live performer/lyricist, helps compile the amazing images for NIN music videos or live concert performances; and consistently offers innovation (not too derivative and not too catchy) through lyrics, subject matter, worldwide concert tours, and working with countless people in the music industry.
He's worked with people/musicians/directors for NIN projects as well as for other music artists. Offers ways to cope/understand what is reality around us and how to deal with everything with a sense of purity/righteousness.

I like this song alot for its content and the calming singing.
However, the thoughts this is stirring up in me are a bit complicated.
We create not only what controlls us but also what we hate. We have a government just because we fear others arent able to controll them selfes, so
we push the bothersome job onto something thats not "us" like the government.
While we wish for them to controll the others. we ignore the fact that we may be manipulated and suddenly act all suprised?
Just too ironic.

Surely you're joking. Trent Reznor doesn't even constitute an exceptional person.

Exceptional in what way? Don't be vague, and provide good solid support for your statements.
