This should be retitled. It reminds me of Ron Paul battling the evil emperor Obama, and his evil henchmen of the US Federal Government/Empire of evil. Actually Cheney would have made an excellent emperor. Bush was too dumb to be vader though.
there's something immensely sad and melancholic about the fight between luke and vader (probably because of john williams' incredible score). it's like some kind of allegory for the natural struggle between a father and a son in all human lives, a struggle that's timeless and endless.
I generally agree with you. But Revenge Of The Sith was an awesome movie. Very dark like the Empire Strikes Back. Don't knock it too much. It was a good film although Phantom Menace was trash.
I think that it's really funny that no matter if Luke would have lost, won, died, turned to the dark side or whatever it doesn't really matter because the outcome of the Battle of Endor would be the same...
@Kubinda12345 Not necessarily. Some of the books mention that at the moment the Emperor died, the whole Imperial fleet seemed to go to shit. It was implied that the Emperor was using the force to coordinate their attacks and such. They use another Dark Jedi for a similar purpose in that book (I think this was part of the Thrawn trilogy).
@MrVikes21 Well, there are plenty of alternate fan endings in the end...my fav is where Mace Windu comes back and kills the emperor! Luke doesn't die, Mace doesn't die, Anakin doesn't die!
9:20 and up still make me cry like a fuckin baby no matter what. I watched this with my gf 3 or 4 days ago and she'd NEVER seen me cry, not over anything. This shit reduces me to a little bitch in 0-40 seconds man :(
I think it's funny how Palpatine sounds all dark, twisted and evil, but when he's being attacked (or thrown down a reactor shaft), he sounds like a total wimp.
@retbookers It was so awesome, I was 11 or 12 depending on which month it came out. Even as a pre-teen loud-mouth, I was quiet in awe of such a great (almost) final scene. Soon came..."It's a trap!!"...LOL
@brandonesters And yet he still had to throw in the Ewoks. Lucas is a guy with a few good ideas for a story, but all in all he's overrated as a storyteller.
@mqbitsko well yeah I admit that Lucas got a little lazy with his films, But I wouldn't call him overrated, he created two timeless trilogies Indy and Star Wars. Yes, now he has became a cash cow who doesn't really care what ppl think of his stuff now because he knows that he's going to a lot of revenue in return. But overrall he's not that overrated.
@brandonesters I still like the original trilogy, but the lightsaber fights are really dull and they look like 10 year olds when they fight. I mean they train their entire lives with a lightsaber and that's how they fight? At least with the prequels, it makes sense because that they do a whole bunch of complex shit.
@wafflecushioned on the same token, Vader was a decrepit robot and Luke received a crash course in Jedi training from Yoda. Jedi and Sith hadn't gone head to head in full combat in 20 years.
@tachikoma747 I never really thought about it that way. It makes perfect sense. Luke only trains for like, I don't know, 2 or 3 years? If Anakin wasn't in that suit, Luke would have his ass handed to him. By the way, over the summer, I wanted to watch all the star wars movies in order from episode I-VI, since I've never done it before. I made it to Return of the Jedi and I couldn't find it anywhere. So for me, the saga ends with Han being captured and Luke losing his hand. lol
@wafflecushioned it was the late '70s to the early '80s, man. nobody in hollywood had even heard of hk cinema, let alone yuen-wo ping. give them a break.
@brandonesters wow...I KNEW I wasn't the only one who thought that way...the saber battles were so much more emotional and the drama behind it just made them gold.
I had not noticed, but that was the first time in the films that music was put into a lightsabre duel -- the hum of the lightsabres was sufficiently musical that they didn't need music.
I like that the music is soft and sad, rather than either a pounding action beat or a triumphant crescendo, since Luke isn't actually winning the battle.
Much better than the "heroic" music when the soldiers shoot the crippled tripod in Spielberg's "War of the Worlds." Real heroic, boys: they're already dead.
@McDaring Yes...so many of us wished for and wanted to feel this magic again....but we didn't get it. And you're right....we have thjs...and it means so much. We'll always have these moments!
@McDaring too bad in the remakes of the classic trilogy he remade boba fetts' voice, made greedo shoot first, put hayden in as vader as a ghost at the end of RoTJ and massacred many other things as well.
@McDaring Lucas never really created that magic in the first place. He certainly sparked it, but people forget that he had little to do with these actual scenes. The director of photography knew what he was doing to evoke emotions here, as well as the ACTUAL director everyone forgets (Richard Marquand), and George was not the sole screenwriter which usually means someone came in and re-wrote it (Lawrence Kasdan). He didn't direct or write Empire either. In the least, he hired talented people.
Hey, ya know what would be totally lame? If right when he grabbed the Emperor, Vader yelled out "NOOOOO!" hahaha--....wait

@McDaring Agreed; The part that pulls you in is the music. It completely says, "this is the final, father vs. son battle". Very epic.
finntastic4 11 months ago
@McDaring IIRC, this was the first saber fight that had a score, and only because it was so emotionally charged.
I would say that I wish they kept that theme in the prequels, but Duel of the Fates is one of the best songs ever composed.
